Motion to Allow Name Change Donations

in what i thought was a generous, appropriate, and overall amiable decision, i donated my single name change to everybodys favourite poster, GeriatricGrandpa4, a week or so ago in the name change thread.

however, in true party pooper fashion atrainv somehow decided this was invalid. i do not believe it should be. and this is why:

the reason we are now only allowed one name change is because people were changing their shit to retarded and obnoxious names a la "X 'fuck Y' Z" with no hesitation because they could just change it back. not only is GeriatricGrandpa4s request neither obnoxious or retarded, but it is evident that he as well as those who have forfeited their own name changes are completely serious about the change.

my rebuttal is "so the fuck what?"

a high majority of the people on this website are self-absorbed, jealous, and egocentric assholes who would never donate their name change in favour of some troll dickhead who wants some bullshit name. i doubt you would be able to find a whole hell of a lot of people willing to donate their name change at all, actually. and if you impose some sort of exchange rate like five donated name changes (from valid posters to avoid somebody just making a handful of fake accounts) to the same person give that person one name change, i see even less tomfoolery going down.

it wouldnt be a hard thing to do. have the five people post in the thread, or PM since clutter seems to be a problem, something along the lines of "i would like to donate my name change to GeriatricGrandpa4 so that he can change his to GreatestGatsby4" and once the name change occurs, simply include the donors names with an asterisk along with the change in the threads OP to avoid multiple donations and other fraudulent behavior on either side. and if it wasnt clear, the donation would count fully as your own name change. so i would be unable to change my name after donating without finding five donated names myself.

if he wants to change it again, even changed back, then he would need twice as many donations. this would, im pretty sure, deter anyone whos just fucking around. only those held in high enough regard by enough posters or those truly hellbent on the name change will succeed. and if thats the case they deserve it. a female poster PMs titties to five posters to get five donations? give it to her. gg4 has scores upon scores of loyal and loving followers? give him that shit.

i truly think it could work and see no downsides in allowing this process, though i suppose thats the whole point in starting a discussion about it.

If we were going to change the name-change policy it would be to get rid of it, not to allow for "donations." It's annoying enough as it is right now to have to keep track of everybody's name changes and check to make sure they haven't changed it before and whether or not it's one of their old names, etc. (not difficult, just annoying). Having to count up 5 donations as well would just make me less likely to keep up.

Ultimately, you guys don't actually care about changing the policy. What you REALLY want is to have GG4's name changed. However, why should we change this policy just because one person wants their name changed and has decided to be super vocal about it?

The reason we implemented the rule to begin with was because people were changing their names all the time (people like GG4) on a whim and it was becoming harder to moderate these users as nobody was sure who was who and which users were making genuine mistakes when they messed up and which users were just perpetually causing drama.

While I don't personally have anything against GG4, if I decide to say "Oh, hey, you're not such a bad guy, why don't I just bend this one time and give you an extra name change", I'll never hear the end of it from the other people who want to rules-lawyer me into giving them one. It's not just an exception, it's a precedent. I get enough angry PMs about retarded shit as it is and I don't want to have to sift through a pile of people bitching about how they don't like their name (when it VERY CLEARLY states in the thread what the rule is and how it works).

So, in summary:

-A name change donation system would be more annoying than the current system, so it's not going to happen.
-We're not going to get rid of the system altogether because it still serves a purpose.
-GG4 is stuck with his name as it is now as he should have read the rules before if he thought he was going to want to change it once again.

While I like GG4 and would support a name change for him personally, I can also see Atrain's point: name change limitations do serve a purpose, and exceptions generally weaken a rule.

However, I don't see the harm in allowing exceptions for long-time high-volume posters, since those two things act as a screen to prevent the flood of "but you made an exception for X" requests. Maybe not enough of one, though... maybe we can change the limit to two name changes per poster?

While the purpose is to keep things more organized and simple, if I break down and change it for this one time, what's to stop people like SHH from saying "oh well, everybody knows that my handles are always variations of SHH, so I should get free name changes too!"? If you read the rules, you knew ahead of time that you wouldn't be able to change it again. Why are you complaining now instead of then? It seems to me that this is less of an issue of "we don't like this policy" and more of an issue of "something didn't go my way and now I'm upset!".
