View Full Version : Poker
Recently I've taken a massive interest in playing poker. I've known how to play Hold'em for years, and play occasionally, but now I want to really improve my game.
So, does anyone have any recommendations on books to buy, videos to watch etc.? Just some good books for beginners. Not just for Hold'em either, I'm interested in the other variations too, like Omaha, Stud and so on. I've played some HORSE tournaments for play-money just to get used to the rules and stuff of various games.
So y'know... discuss :)

I don't know what the variation we play is called, but here's how it goes.
You play a 32 deck, from card 7 and up. Every player is dealt five cards. You can raise before you see your cards. Raising goes counter-clockwise. After everyone calls, each player can exchange a maximum of 4 cards.
Combination strength:
1) royal flush
2) poker (four cards)
3) flush
4) three cards
5) big straight (10, J, Q, K, A)
6) small straight (7, 8, 9, 10, A)
7) two pairs
8) pair
9) high card
Note that these rules are mostly composed by the players in my poker clique, and I doubt they're like that anywhere else. We play different variations too, where 4 cards is higher than a royal flush.
Either way, if you always play with the same group of people, the longer you play the interesting the game will get as you'll change the rules around to make the game more interesting, faster, etc. Just make sure everyone is clear on the rules, because if they aren't, people can get real bitchy if you're playing for actual money.

Sounds like a fucked up Polish version of your generic 32 card poker.

I like poker, and I also like Texas Hold 'em. I play the tables probably every fortnight or so, usually clean end up being one of the last few people to leave. Have won a couple tourneys and cleaned up a state champion before - alas, outside of any official event.

i love poker, i went through a phase where i'd have poker nights at my place once a week, but that stopped happening when my friends got sick of losing their money. every now and then when i'm really fucked i'll drop by the casino, just to top off the night. but i hardly ever leave the casino with more money than when i came in. you have to be sober or else it just doesn't seem to work out.

Phil Gordon's "Little Green Book" is pretty much the only thing worth reading, but the best way to learn is by watching others play (not just pros, because beginner strategies are sometimes just as hard to deal with, so you need to learn them all).

Nice link bjork :)
It seems really hard to find a starting book on poker. I've always wondered (not just for poker) if it makes a difference just going straight for an "advanced" book. Like the 'For Advanced Players' series by Sklansky, Mason Malmuth and Ray Zee. Would it hurt my play by reading these without reading a "beginners" book first?
