i recently got a guitar that someone gave me, and i've always been interested in learning how to play. i don't really want to buy books or tutorials because some are pretty expensive. i'm that that "guitar savvy" but i would like to be. any suggestions on the best way to learn to play? classes are not an option considering how expensive they are. anyone know any cheap books or tutorials that would help me out?

First thing i did was learn to read tabs. Then i started learning songs for a bit, prolly around 2 weeks, just little riffs here and there. Then i got my hand on some chord charts and learnt the basic chords. I reckon first thing to do is learn tabs. Then you can teach yourself by learning songs. At first you'll be learning the songs via memory, and then soon you'll be able to learn songs faster by the tab, rather than memory!

And what type of guitar? pics?

Just anything basically. It doesn't really matter. I'm a real slow learner also so was thinking about wanting to get video instructions and stuff... But I don't know.

Learn chords, and learn how to tell when your guitar is out of tune.
If you can't tune it properly (not that guitar savvy, you say) it's going to be hard to make it sound good, man.
Learn to tune by ear or get a tuner or something. Go to http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/index.php and learn some chords.

go to ultimate-guitar, look for the lessons section.

That's probably all you will need, that page is my fucking bible.

If not, you can always use google.
