View Full Version : Disposable Camera into a Taser?

I wasn't sure if this should go in here or Bad Ideas, but I suppose it could be classed as a self defense method. Anyway.
Does anyone know how/have a guide as to how to turn a disposable camera into a single use taser? I've heard about this, and I saw a link to a youtube video of how to, but it had been removed. Thanks in advance.

i dont remember how but me and a friend made one once
they hurt like hell but not enough for self defence
i still have the scar on my hand were it zapped me
have you tried google?
this (http://www.5min.com/Video/Make-A-Powerful-Tazer-from-a-Camera-4246) was the first hit on google

Thanks, I didn't think of looking on google.. The link you did provide was okay, it's given me a basic idea of what to do.

its all cool
i didnt even watch the video but im sure it had to be of some help
i think there are a few text articles somewhere cause thats how we built ours
but really if you are planning on using this as self defense i wouldnt even bother
it would just piss the attacker off

I didn't think of looking on google
anyway, this would hurt but I don't think it'd be much good for self defence

I doubt it will help at all

What I did was make one in a pill bottle. That pill bottle fit neatly down the barrel of my pneumatic starch accelerator. Thusly, I created a taser projectile.

About the worst idea for self-defense, output is only around 300v.
And nuclearrabbit: Try shooting the charged capacitors out of blowguns at people :D

Well, as you guys said, it's definitely not enough for self defense. But it was fun making it. I thought it wasn't working after I thought I had finished, then I went to pick up the remains and brushed against a random metal part of the camera, and shocked myself.
But, if you added more capacitors (and battery power), and connected it all up to two wires leading out, you could start getting a fair bit more power.. Meh, it's 4 in the morning where I am, I'm tired.

Yeh these bastards hurt....
Accidentally hand the positive in one hand and the negative in the other.....didnt realise it was charged lol.
Hurts as it goes across your spine.

I'm finally getting round to posting in this thread, albeit with an epic hangover. Don't ever try to catch a swan despite what alcohol tells you. Those bastards have one hell of a peck. :(
Typical camera flashes use three wires - negative, positive and a trigger. There's about 300v (as 13579 said) put across the neg/pos lines, and 3kv or so is fed to the trigger. That 3kv ionises the gas in the flash tube and allows it to pass current from the 300v supply and light up. The trigger is simply a metal plate inside the tube between the anode and cathode electrodes. However, that 3kv is a very low current, often obtained from pulsing the 300v supply across a choke.
Since the current is so low, you can forget about zapping someone with that juicy, juicy 3kv. The 300v supply is somewhat higher current than your typical stun gun though which is why it really, really hurts...and has the real possibility of killing someone if they have damp skin and current passes through the heart, i.e. an electrode in each hand. Wolfy is one lucky sod.
Example: Energy = 1/2 * Voltage in capacitor ^ 2 * Capcitance. Assuming the cap is 300v and stores 150uF, that means there's almost 7 joules of energy (or painnnn) stored. Commercial tasers use lots of low energy pulses in rapid succession, hence why they're not as dangerous but still fucking hurt. They can't dump a shitload of energy into you in an infinitely short amount of time like the fat cap in a flash can.
Anyway, back on topic. To increase the pain factor, you need to modify the circuit to act more like a taser and pulse very quickly with less energy - adding more capacitors would simply increase the amount of energy stored, making the jolt you feel more powerful but it wouldn't necessarily hurt more. This is most easily done with a SIDAC, which is used to crudely function like the spark gap and associated trigger circuitry in a taser. A SIDAC has a very high resistance up until a certain voltage, upon when it will break down into an almost short circuit condition. Simply solder it across the switch you press to set the flash off - a 250v breakdown voltage is probably a good start, but trial and error is the best bet when it comes to selecting a SIDAC. You'd probably need to parallel a few more batteries though to supply enough current to charge the cap in an acceptable time...or alternatively fitting a smaller cap will decrease the time between zaps as it takes less time to charge.

Why not a simple capacitor/battery system in a telescoping baton?
Battery drains into capacitor > capacitor potentiates current and drains into person via sharp electrodes. Have a push-to-make thumbswitch.
Could be a great system if you found a way to electrify the baton's striking surface. The problem you have with those is if the person you're fighting is better trained than you, they'll just wrench the thing out of your arm and beat you with it.
If you want to make it xtra-super 1337, you could mount one of those wickedlasers inside it.
You will be like
and he will be like
 "my eyes!"
And you will stick him in the neck and offload the power.

Shit MunkyQ, that is one damn good explanation (I think). Have to try it out on of these days. Last thing I made with disposable cams was a mini coil-gun with a 2m range. Never got zapped with it though.
