I've noticed that Christianity always needs an adversary to crusade and battle against. I think this is one of the scariest traits that humanity has and to see it as a part of a religion is even scarier.
Why do people and religions need to validate themselves through the things they've faced and conquered or the things they shall face and conquer in times to come.

Moreso in Islam. The whole concept of Jihad is about conquest, though it is not limited to a physical enemy.
But most tales written to inspire do have some sort of adversary. It gives the reader a sense of who is right and wrong. It even works in narrative today.
The fight is inside the mind. It's the blind that take it outside.

My guess is that they all secretly can't stant their true selves and without something to get pissed off at, they could only be pissed off inward... at themselves. To be a strong believer in a system of faith means you can never really, truly be a self-actualized individual.
Since usually the anger or action is directed at other believers (of different faith), it sets up this sort of weird repeat validation. It's like little kids' tantrums. One side throws a tantrum, and eventually gets some skittles. The other side wants its skittles back, so help them god, and throws a tantrum until they get some skittles from someone.
This will never stop until ALL the little ones realize that skittles are not all that important in the grand scheme of things.

In psychology there is the concept of the in-group versus the other-group...
a kind of universal trait of the human psyche, not inherent to any particular religion.
I don't think that people are necessarily at war with themselves... people are just trying to survive and see others as a threat, at the very least a threat to their own resources. (as in the skittles) People with a different origin and a different worldview can be a threat to one's own sense of stability in the world.
God is Great- because dead people have a much better chance of earning forgiveness than a living person. Because you, with your infinite wisdom, are the best judge of who needs saving. Furthermore, you are over-qualified to do the saving simply because you believe.

This attitude is typical of level one spiritual consciousness (according to the system Deepak Chopra worked out in "How to Know God."He says, of the Old Testament God --"He is primordial and largely unforgiving. He knows who his enemies are; he doesn't come from the school of forgive and forget." For more details, see the "seven faces of God" thread.)
