I was reading a book written by an eminent scientist (Alan Weisman for the ones who will ask for justification about what I am about to say) who was assessing what would happen if all humans disappeared tomorrow.

Even though there was extremely valuable info about geophysics and biology, one element struck me more than the rest. Not that I never heard about the thing before but, after giving it more thought, I've seen an omen in it.

Weisman was talking about how quick the Maya civilisation deteriorated and faded so quickly into nothingness. As usual, this sudden demise happened after the Maya people's apogee, History's cycle as you might already now.

But what was very strange is what the archaeological search pointed out about the behaviour of said civilisation right before their downfall: the Maya had taken a predatory stance over all the other nations and were overloaded with an arrogant, frivolous elite who was persuaded that nothing could stop them. In fact, there were so many rich people who all contended in order to possess more useless baubles and many other such trivialities, that the life quality of the other part of the spectrum had turned to a living hell.
Once Mayans realised that their leaders were more interested in their selfish pleasures than the nation's prosperity, a chaotic version of the French revolution precipitated the end of the Mayans' influence and glory...

Don't the behaviour of the Mayan elite right before its eventual decadence sound way too familiar?

Yes, this is what I'm predicting. The Western world as we know it is going downhill. The US and Europe have governed the world during most of the past millennium. But History is a cycle and it likes change every once in a while. I believe somebody else is going to take the lead. Who? I don't know yet. But it WILL happen.

I know you're going to call me all kinds of names, but whatever. Nothing lasts forever, that's all I'm saying.

That's a good point and an interesting observation made on the Mayan civilization, however, I feel the conclusion you've reached with this evidence is presumptuous. I mean if you look at Western History, it will tell you that there have been a multitude of occasions where everyone thought it would end, yet it continued to prevail. I'm not saying your right nor am I saying your wrong. What I am saying is that even when you can find a sort of pattern in human evolution through the study of history, there will always be other instances to contradict the pattern of evolution. What does this mean? It means that in spite of the many similarities there is never a concrete pattern because there will always be variations. They can be almost parallel to one another but no single historical event can ever be the same, just as identical twins can never truly be identical to one another. The Western World is hurting yes, but it is much too soon for these predictions.

All societies so far have gotten to the point where the people in society that lived off of surplus resources without contributing anything meaningful and/or tangible eventually had the foundations collapse under them. I think the new elite know enough about history to delay it for a while.

I wish you were right.

Oh really? And why is that?
