I have a 99 mazda 626. 4 cylinder. blah blah blah. I need more power. more torque, more speeeed. Only known problem is the cat which I will replace before any deal.

While searching for a better car, I came across a 91 firebird that the guy wants to sell, or possibly trade, cause the guy has a kid now and needs a family car. Its a 91, v6 t-top with minor dings and small mechanical problems(non performance related) that I can fix at school (im a auto tech student)

We're ganna meet up to check both cars out in like 2 days. But unless I find anything seriously wrong with his car after throwing it on a lift I think Im ganna go ahead and trade.

Discuss.

Do the smart thing; keep the Mazda. If you're going to buy a performance car, don't half ass it and buy a shitty old V6 Firebird. It might feel slighty faster but honestly if you're really keen on a Camaro/Firebird then save your money and get one with a V8.

Otherwise don't worry about speed; I don't know how old you are or how much driving experience you have but though having a sports car is fun, A) you shouldn't make a quick, rash decision when making such a purchase because sports cars are usually thrashed and it's easy to buy a shitty one if you aren't careful/let your emotions get the better of you, and B) the car you're looking at isn't really a sports car anyway.

If you do anything, do a trade plus cash. Your car is probably worth a bit more than his. See if you can at least get the couple hundred bucks it would take to ditch whatever POS V6 is in the FBody to swap in a 350.

I'd be embarrassed to drive a V6 Firebird.

Sadly i'd have to agree

keep the mazda. there is no way that firebird is worth anything close to it

Supercharge the mazda if need more power

as much as i liked the firebirds body later on in the 90's
I think i'd rather kill myself before driving a 91 rust bucket around

I dint make myself clear I guess. Im ganna use the firebird as a project car, and I WILL swap it out for a v8 once I have the money. I found firebirds v8s online for under 700 bucks. Wheareas they dont even make super/turbo kits for this mazda, and the better engines for the mazda cost about the same, but dont come close to the power of the chevy v8.

Personally I'd save my money and buy something better.

Really guys, if he's going to end up swapping the engine..... what is wrong with this??? It's not a special car by any means but there's plenty of cheap speed involved! For a lousy $1500 he can have the 'Bird running an s/c V8 and doing 12's as a daily.... a few more thousand and it could be a 10 second car.

I wouldn't get it just because its a firebird. Save your mony for a nice fire hawk, or a ws6. Saves you the trouble of changing suspension, rims, hood, spoiler...etc.

I have seen some NICE T/As and Z28s, but you pay for it.

...sure the motor is $700, then how much to have the heads ported? New internals[look up the price of just a camshaft :p] and exhaust. How much to rebuild that automatic trans? Then suspension and rims....it adds up quick. If you have the means to do it then go ahead, just know what you are getting into.

...and more important have fun.

Stop saying rims. Also, he said the firebirds he saw online were 700, not the engines.

Now, onto the rest of your retarded drivel.

Why would you port the heads when you could swap stock heads + a bit of change for some late-model vortec or similar high-flow heads at a swap meet? Buying new parts for a budget build (non-critical parts, that is) is retarded. Secondly, a camshaft is cheap for a 350. There are literally hundreds of high-lift high-duration street shafts out there for pennies on the dollar. Thirdly, you dont need to go apeshit with exhausts on 350s, you can put a pair of cheap headers straight piped into some glasspacks (you are on a budget) and heat wrap the headers if you're feeling spendy, and be fine as far as exhaust goes.

All in all, with a block already there, with machining and parts, you could build a 1 hp/ci engine for less than 3k.

Hell, Hot Rod bought a block and built a whole engine for less than 800 dollars, though I'm not sure when this was published.

Well sure, but.
1. the thing about the heads, I have a machine shop close to my house its easier

2. Still a good bit of money and we have ONLY covered the motor, there is more to a car than just the motor. Plus when you start with a regular v6 firebird you have to change shit to get it up to snuf. Then you have an ugly car.

..so now what? Buy a firehawk hood and bumper. A decent looking spoiler. Some WS6 rims.

...then the interior, I think {NOT POSITIVE} the firebirds came with pretty shitty cloth seats.

..then add up all the little things here and there.

Buying a weekend car to fix up and doing some 1/2 assed job isn't how I do shit. If I can't afford to do it right I won't buy it. But maybe your different, I don't really car to know about it.

^very nice^

And a newer body v8 firebird for under $700?????I doubt it, but shit if you can find it jump on it.

I meant the 350 engines when I said "firebird v8's". Should have made it more clear. Like I said, project car. Im not looking to have it all nice and shiny and racing by next week, we're talking months and months, only on free time.

I figured that was just my little remark to spono.
