View Full Version : Clavicle Surface Piercings

So I've been looking at getting more holes put in me and I've settled on a 1in horizontal clavicle surface piercings like this!
http://www.bmezine.com/pierce/11-surface/A60629/high/bmepb295965.jpg
I really like the ascetics of this piercing but I understand that surface piercings have a habit of rejecting and causing all kinds of problems. So i guess my questions are...
1) Should a surface bar, or tyggon or PTFE bar be used?
2) can a surface bar be removed by the user? (It looks like it would be hard as hell to take out)
3) How rough can I be on this thing? Is a little bump going to cause rejection? how bout Mrs's pulling on it?
4) Does any one have one and how do you like it?
Thanks:D

I don't have anything to contribute to this thread other than the fact that I think those are fuckin hot piercings.
I love clavicles.

My advice is to ask the piercer about dermals, they're less likely to reject and the scarring is minimal. I have two, so I'm a bit biased that way.
Do not get any kind of straight bar. Most surface piercings (and definitely these ones!) just shouldn't be done that way. You should be able to get them to put in a staple shaped bar, it will reject eventually (all surface piercings are guaranteed to reject over time) but not as easily.
A surface bar can be removed by it's owner but it's painful and overall just easier to get the piercer to do it for you.
If you bump it, it can cause the rejection cycle to begin, even a long time after it's fully healed, but it's not likely and it would take a decent bump. The missus pulling on it, I would not recommend. If you can get through the first couple of weeks, you can be a little more rough on them but for the first few days especially, they are fragile, fragile things.
I have a friend who had them, I thought they were gorgegous on her. Her's rejected though. I think they suit guys too.

I would definitely recommend doing them as surface piercings after reading magpies view on it. I think it would be much less painful.

Be careful with surface piercings, they can get really nasty really quickly. Never get them on an area where you will be putting any amount of weight on them for any length of time on a fairly regular basis(i.e. sleeping, sitting, etc) or having a habit of wearing tight clothing and especially if you're constantly moving in such clothing(i.e. running or other exercise) because that will get them to reject insanely fast. They'll start to callous around the edges and then the callouses will start to build under the bar and push it out.
I had a good friend that had 2 set of verticals going up either side of her spine and within 9 months almost pushed themselves completely out. They were all red and puffy and you could see the bars sticking out of her skin. They were the staple shaped barbels specifically for surface piercing too. I'd advise against ever getting them. They just seem like a shit ton of pain with maybe 5-6 months of them looking decent just for them to go to shit just as quickly.

Spot on. I have two dermals as well, they gave me the least problem of any piercing I've ever had.

For the most part, this. The placement is always awkward looking. I digress.
1) Any piercer worth his salt knows to USE A FUCKING SURFACE BAR. The way your skin heals will not allow for a straight bar, even if it's made from a flexible material.
2) Odds are you'll have to go back to a piercer when/if you want to remove them. Not a huge deal, they'll probably do it for free if it's the same place you got it from.
3) Like most piercings, once it's healed you can fucking give 'er. I know a fuck who attached suspenders to her hip surface piercings. Because of the placement of the ones you want, you're gonna want to wear loose shirts and stay away from backpacks and shit. Seat belts will be a problem too.
4) No, I like dermals better.

You fucking retard. It's going to reject.
Tygon isn't supposed to be used for surface piercings. It is constantly applying pressure on the skin from underneath, so it can't heal properly. This equals rejection.
Enjoy your unsightly scarring.

Yea yea yea,
I know tygon is not supposed to be used, but I need to be able to take the bars out when boxing with my mates sooooooo.... that's why I opted for it.
and your forgetting 2 things!
1. I'm in college and therefor I'm invincible!
2. I've got a supper secret plan to thwart rejection, Ill tell you guys if they start to reject.
Edit: and in my opinion there is no such thing as an "unsightly scar" There are only scars with and with out charicter :P

It WILL reject. There is no way it wont reject. Skin is not made to heal when it's constantly being pushed on. What a fun waste of $80, go elsewhere and get them fixed.

About 5 days after piercing and things are looking...Bad
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/4186/img1095h.jpg
The left side was pretty badly macerated by the piercers clamps, as she tried to position things in the right spot:mad:.
The edges are draining still and the wounds smell distinctly fruity denoting minor infection, I feel like rejection might be around the corner so its time for plan B...
But I'm not conseeding defeat yet...

I just lost my 12 gauge cartilage piercing I got like 3 months ago, it wouldnt fucking quit getting infected, no matter what I did. Do your body a favor, and pull them out and alcohol the shit out of them. Let them heal, and try again with dermals.
Those really do look awful, get to a doctor if you can and get antibiotics. Whoever pierced them owes you some cash too.

Whoever pierced him with a straight bar should be shot. The bar would push against your clavicle. Those babies are begging to reject.

Agreed, at the very least it should have been done with a curved bar if you want it to be taken out easily, but staple shaped would be the best bet. Putting straight bars in surface piercings is a waste of money, time, and potentially very painful and expensive to get treated if they get a particularly bad infection while it's rejecting (which it's apt to do)
The piercer should have had his head slammed against the wall for even thinking about doing the piercing with that type of bar.

I agree, a curved bar or staple shaped would be good, but dermals would be ideal.
OP: Don't go back to that piercer.

Fuckin awesome, pics when you can. I've been thinking of getting my septum done for a long time now, but parents wouldn't sign the paperwork so I could get it done and my mom threatened to rip it out if I had my cousin (the only professional piercer I trust) do it. Only 6 months until I can send my parents a big fuck you and get my piercings though, getting my damn tat redone is at the top of my body mod list, though.

I tend to wear teeny studs in it, so I don't think it would look too bad, I need to get more nose rings though. I only have one left, and every time the screw part slips down the metal is very noticeable on the inside of my nostril. I'm thinking of wearing just a plain silver hoop in it, though, then if/when I get my septum done, seeing what looks best with the septum ring in. I don't wanna take my nose piercing out, though, I've grown accustomed to it over the 2 years I've had it.

Yeah, I've always wanted to pierce my nose and put a ring through it. Nostril that is. The septum was a spur of the moment kinda thing. The guy fucked up when he was piercing it, so it had to be done again. It didnt hurt the second time. Just don't go to Bullwinkles lol.

Well, honestly, what did you expect?
Clavicle surface piercings are filthy when they're done correctly, and heal on the person, but that rly doesn't happen often.
You're in the US right? You should have just got sub-clavicles instead.

i've gone through something like this, but on my nape. i got it pierced about 5 months ago, and they put the PTFE (teflon) bars in, like you have. it was a bit of a hassle to take care of, and things were red for a while, in the same place yours is. i got it done in central illinois, and when i came back up to chicago, i had someone else look at it, tell me it was looking bad, and then had him put in a staple shaped piece of metal pn the spot, and it's looked 100x better since. i still have some scarring from the teflon, but i hope that will go away. as i said, i've had it for about 5 months now, and i hardly clean it other than when i shower, and it's doing great.
the problem with teflon is yes, it is always putting pressure on the skin, and it makes some of your skin really thin, decreasing blood flow, making it easier to reject. somewhere along the line, i'd highly suggest putting in a staple shaped bar if you want it to last, and at the very least a crescent shaped. better description below:
___O,________,O____
......\========/
closeup:
....__
...(...)
___\ \_____
.......\`-----
shown in the ball, the teflon, and skin. the red part shows the part of the skin that has constant pressure on it, making the skin thin. since this is pressing in on both sides, is will make the piercing smaller with time, greatly increase the chance of rejection. also, that will not be healthy skin, so if you bump it, the shin will tear. believe me, i've had this happen (bumped it in the shower). i can see this happening easily with a shirt while maybe undressing.
this is what a staple shape would look like:
........._......................_
........(..)...................(..)
------] [--------------] [---
.........'------------------'
no pressure
if you need a staple shaped barbell, i got one that is 1" long, and ended up being too long for mine (ended up being 7/8"), so if you need one, i'd sell you it. i can post a pic if needed.
here are some pics of mine, to help show some of the differences in color and pressure from the 2 types:
a few weeks after having the teflon in:
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7544/cimg5035.jpg (http://img41.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg5035.jpg)
as i'm typing this post, with staple shaped (i got disks instead of balls):
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/2376/cimg6135.jpg (http://img194.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg6135.jpg)
both disks removed, also as i type:
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3746/cimg6141.jpg (http://img41.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg6141.jpg)
you can see the red from the pressure with the teflon and that there is no pressure with the staple. with the disks are off, you can see all the scarring left from the issues with the teflon, but luckily it doesn't show. hopefully those go away before i remove it completely.
but yea, i'd say go with the staple if you want it to really last. i think they look pretty cool, btw.

That can be an issue. I'm not saying ti will be but if it starts to callous badly over the scar tissue, it can start to put a lot of pressure on that end.

I have 4 dermals between my ribs and I've gotta say, they heal up real nice. Hell I've even bumped mine pretty hard and they didn't flare up at all.
Plus if they're done properly (sitting flush on the skin) it's hard to pull on them with clothes and whatever.
Seeing as you need to remove them for boxing, you could just take the top off of the dermal, after the skin has grown in properly, and the post won't fall back down into the hole.
