A 26-year-old man was behind bars in Camden County on Tuesday afternoon, charged with beating a nine-year-old boy to death, then leading police on a high-speed chase through parts of South Jersey.
The Camden County prosecutor's office confirms that Vincent Williams (above) has been charged with the murder of nine-year-old Jamar Cruz. Spokesman Jason Laughlin says that Williams was the boy's mother's boyfriend:
"Vincent Williams was picked up for questioning. It appears that Mr. Williams punched and kicked Jamar on Monday morning around 7am, seriously injuring the boy. The boy did not receive any medical attention between Monday and Tuesday."
According to police, the boy did not get any medical attention despite repeated complaints about pain throughout the day on Monday, and an ambulance was finally called on Tuesday morning after the child displayed evidence of a significant
injury.
The boy died Tuesday morning at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
Laughlin says Williams, of the Ablett Village Apartments in Magnolia, NJ, led Magnolia police on a high-speed chase on Tuesday morning (see related story). Laughlin says at that time officials only wanted to talk to Williams in connection with the case.
Williams was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday morning. Laughlin reserved comment on whether charges will be filed against anyone else in the case.
