I just read this (http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/ht/ethanol.htm) and I was wondering if it was accurate and if anyone has tried it?

Looks like it'll work from what I know. You'll probably run into some operational kinks though, there's got to be some more through material on the internet.

I scanned it briefly, and upon encountering "it may be illegal to distill alcohol in the U.S. without a permit" (my emphasis), I would look for other resources. It is absolutely illegal to distill alcohol in the U.S. w/o a permit. Also, there are many other feedstocks besides corn that can be used.

Since the article is wrong on (at least) two points, it isn't accurate.

1. Chop up a bunch of apples into mush.
2. Put in clean container open to the air outside.
3. Natural yeast collects on apples.
4. Empty gunk into a larger container, you can add a little water and yeast if you want.
5. Put a plug on top of container with a tube that leads down to a bottle of water on the side to prevent CO2 buildup.
6. Wait a while, until gas is no longer being produced.
7. ????
8. PROFIT!! (not legally)

Or if you want something relatively more powerful yeast wise there is always this http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=11720 i mean 23% as a base for distilling is good...

Legality is a tricky matter, the "may" could very well just be a caution, given the constant change of laws and regulations, rather than an outright claim.
