On Yahoo I noticed a headline about Bill O Reilly's anger over Eminem's new video. It's for a song called "We Made You", and in it he basically makes fun of several female celebrities that have been making a fool out of themselves in the media for the past year. It all basically boils down to mocking them for their obvious problems or strange behavior, and then saying that he wants to or wanted to bang them. Like, he talks about how he wishes Lindsey Lohan would come back to men, or how he doesn't know why Portia De Rossi is with Ellen, or Kim Kardashian's big ass, or how he wants to nail Palin, etc. Basically, he puts the thoughts of every man into the spotlight.

I didn't hear or see a single "sexist" or misogynist thing in that video, and yet Bill O'Reilly thinks it's an attack on women, interviewed some feminist, and for a political spin, he started ranting about how no one cares when a Republican gets insulted.

On the misogynism front, I'm absolutely annoyed by how people characterize anything even remotely unpleasant, coming from men toward females (specific individuals or a specific group of women) as "misogynistic". The word means "hating women". Calling Sarah Palin stupid does not mean you hate women. Talking about how you wish such-and-such lesbian was still interested in men does not mean you hate women. Even not voting for Hilary Clinton because you didn't want a female president does not mean you hate women.

As for sexism, there's a similar problem. Many people seem to think that being sexually crude toward women is equivalent to not valuing them as being of equal worth. Men want to have sex with attractive women. There's nothing sexist about expressing that in a blatant way, nor is there anything sexist about, for instance, Eminem saying he wants to have sex with all these women. It's crude and rude, definitely, but it has no bearing on how one actually values women. Even guys who do stuff like slapping girls' asses aren't necessarily sexist, as being disrespectful doesn't necessarily require that you feel you're superior.

Finally, the political nonsense that O'Reilly brought up is bullshit, of course. No one cares when Palin gets mocked, not because she's a Republican, but because she's effectively earned the mockery. No one cared when Bush was mocked, because he too effectively earned the mockery.

What are your thoughts on the video, the use of words like mysogyny and sexism, and perhaps the current status of gender relations?

Bill O'Reilly is an idiot and a blatant misogynist himself when it suits his purpose.

I think he's a terrible example of that line of accusation- he's in the least appropriate position to throw around that term, especially since he chooses to throw it out at the most unsupported cases (Sarah Palin.)

It's like crying "wolf" on an issue that was never his to cry out on in the first place.

Ha, it's funny that Bill "Loofah" O'Reilly would say something like that.

If you don't understand the reference, I urge you to google "Bill O'Reilly Loofah Sexual Harassment"

The meanings of some words nowadays have evolved beyond their linguistic roots. For example I don't think I've come across any homophobes who are actually afraid of homosexuals, yet this is what they're almost universally described as being when they make derogatory comments about gays. Equally you don't seem to have to hate women[1] to be described as a misogynist.

Running around pointing at the definitions of Greek or Latin roots in a dictionary isn't going to change that.

1) What does "hate" mean anyway, the occasional bitch-slap or shower time with Norman Bates?

Yup, and every now and then when ever I take some liberal professor he will always say lots of minorities suffer from a form of "self hatred" because they see whites as superior. This isn't self hatred, its self resentment.

And op you're right, I read this the other day http://digg.com/world_news/Woman_jumps_into_bear_enclosure_at_Berlin_Zoo_The_ Sun_New?t=24841377#c24841377

a women who jumps into a polar bear enclosure gets called a cunt by a user which prompts some actual cunt to drop an M bomb:mad:

What it comes down to is this:

People will be offended by anything if they are the sort who are already decidedly going to go out of their way to be sure that they are offended at every turn.

Feel free to lump people of any stereotypical group into the above explanation. It isn't just black people that pull the race card, women that pull the sexist card, etc. There are people of every race, color and denomination that are just out there looking to be offended about a topic. You don't even have to be a part of the group you're being offended on behalf of.

Some people just want to be unhappy all the time.

pickletacofan thank you for your post.

Whimsi there are individuals of any race who are looking to be offended, however it's the white race that has the right to be offended - as they are fronting the bill for everyone else.

Some people are just failed-at-life narcissists with no friends or purpose in life, who have found a new identity by championing certain causes ad nauseum.
