So, after being batshit for a few years, I figure I might as well try the CBT route, and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on getting a therapist. Did you just pick someone out of a phone book and call? Did your GP send you there? Are they actually some old fucker you sell weed to?

I have very few requirements; although I would prefer a male therapist with no religious affiliations whatsoever. Actually, those are a must. I think religion is a disease, and I have issues with 95% of the women I meet, so that could cause clashing.

What did you look for? What should I (aside from what I mentioned)?

This situation makes me feel vaguely uncomfortable.

Although I've never used it personally, this seems like a pretty good site for trying to find a therapist:

http://www.mentalhelp.net/

You can browse by location and by the types of therapy offered. Certain types (such as CBT, like you mentioned) are more effective for different people and for different issues.

Otherwise, you might consider contacting a local hospital. Even if they don't themselves offer psychological treatment, they will likely have a directory of private practices that you can contact as they likely refer patients pretty regularly.

But yeah, the phonebook works too, it's just become a bit more archaic these days.

Shop around, I had to go through two before finding a really good one.
