View Full Version : Why do some people desire attention a lot?
Do they think it gives them power over the person paying attention to them?
Or do they think that person will take care of them, because their mommy did?
Or do they think they are more secure from other people's attacks?
Or do they think people will protect them from their own stupidity?
It seems to be a common trait among stupid people. Usually the stupider someone is, the more attention they want, but why? What do they think they will gain from it?

I don't know...I guess, it is kind of hard to explain when you think about it. You should try asking them, but, I doubt you'd get a straight answer.
Most humans desire attention at least to some extent. However, the people that take it to the extreme are usually the ones that don't get enough attention elsewhere. This answer may sound like a cop out, but it's the best I got.

you have to naive to think that people don't have to fight for attention. and you'd have to be stupid to think there's no power in that.
i mean, look at these guys

So having other people's attention means becoming famous and getting more attention/money/connections?

if you do great things, people will have no choice but to pay attention
if you do great things, people will have no choice but to pay attention
So attention = approval? If people pay attention to someone, then that someone thinks they've done good?

Not always. Even if it's negative attention - so long as it's attention - some people will be happy. You'd be surprised.

no, dumb people just want attention without working for it

I know and I'm trying to figure out why.

For the same bizarre reasons we crave approval and acceptance from our peers.

Wanting approval (from those we deem important) makes sense - people need help with stuff and therefore it's good to have friends and people who respect you in general. In short: cooperation.

I'm not trolling BTW, I've been thinking about this for a while and have confused myself with too many theories or some shit.

There's a good example right here on Zoklet. This chick:

WTF does she hope to gain from some random strangers on a public transport being annoyed by her?

Nope, I was serious. I even tried Googling first, but all i got was "They want attention because they didn't get enough attention from parents." or "They want attention because they are selfish."

Yeah, that's why I feel kind of bad, because every answer there kind of gives you "the run-around", if you can feel me. I wish there was a better way to explain it.

When I was a little kid I would make crappy drawings and then show them to my mom and she would get really happy and praise me for doing that.
As I grew older I realized I get this massive dopamine rush if people praise me for a picture that I drew.
IDK I guess I just like people praising me. It gives me a much better feeling than if someone gave me money.
I guess it gives me a reason not to die.

What? What the fuck is this thread? What the fuck am I reading? It doesn't have much do to with intellect or lack thereof, its a matter of introvert vs. extrovert. Here in America (at least), extroversion has been very, very glorified over the past.. I don't know, 50-60 years? It's how the 'business world' operates, its how social customs develop. Fuck, it's tough to explain but it's not THAT confusing.
Many great thinkers, theorists, researchers, and innovators were introverts, yes. Albert Einstein was an introvert (really, a theoretical physicist wasn't a party boy!?). But movers and shakers? Game-changers and deal-makers? More and more of them are extroverts, because they want to find a way to get noticed. They believe in themselves. Cut them some fucking slack.
But bitches like Kim Kardashian and all them other loud-mouthed whores? Don't mind them, they're just women.
I'm kidding with that last line (kind of).

Because throughout my childhood and highschool I was ignored or put down by nearly everybody that wasn't my family. I was a really lonely kid. Except for a few key people, but they ended up hurting me also. That's nothing to cry home about however, at least I had a small circle of friends for a while. Approval, inclusion, acknowledgement, those have been mostly abscent from my life growing up.That's why I like attention. I don't like negative attention much though. Sometimes it's fun, but it can hurt my feelings because I tend to be a sensitive mamby-pamby. I think in a way zoklet has helped with that. I've learned how to cope with insults better, and logic my way out of ones that don't have much validity.

I'm the same way. Whenever I worked as a waiter, I always preferred a compliment over a tip. I usually got both, but regardless, I would have been fine with just a kind word.

A good tip is a compliment if you ask me.

Oh, truth betold. But, if I had to pick between to scenarios, I'd rather that they were nice to me and didn't tip - rather than mean to me and did tip. If...if that makes any sense at all.
