So a buddy of mine who everyone calls "Blackness" (yes, he approves, and no it's not racist) told us about some of his experiences carshopping around the area, let's say from Flint to Detroit-ish.

When I asked him about whether or not the whole rich-vs-middle class neighborhood argument held any water, he said it was hit or miss. He went to one of the richest areas around Detroit in a suburb called Bloomfield Hills - very upscale gated type place.

So he tells us that in a few weeks of scoping the place out during both day and night, he decided to hit up some areas. He said almost all the cars he checked were unlocked (BMWs, Benzes, Range Rovers, one Maserati) like seriously expensive cars - checked them top to bottom and found dick the first night out. When he finally gave up at 330am, he was going to get back on the freeway when he hit up a condo neighborhood and in one car he found like over $600 in cash and a bunch of new designer clothes, still in the bags. Hardly any police traffic after 10pm, but around 2am it started picking up, with a car going up the street every half hour or so.

He hit a regular sbubdivision near where he lives and I shit you not, found $15k stashed in a bag in the trunk of a beat-up old car. So, it's really a matter of checking everywhere inside the car and not being overly discriminating on what kind of areas and cars you check. In otherwords, don't pass up a shitty car just because you think there's nothing in it.

Next thing he did was check out in more rural areas where there are a lot of little clusters of upper middle and rich folks. On one night he pulled several laptops, $1500 in cash and lose change, smokes, imported cigars, and liquor out of a handful of cars out between Waterford and Clarkston. I asked him how me managed not to get nailed, he said, since the state is literally bankrupt, places out of the way have either no local police, or rely on county or state patrols - meaning that in all the times he went out, he saw maybe one or two cop cars driving around. He said he was more worried about all the gun-toting hunters in the area then he was the cops!

Middle class areas are good for finding cars that tend to have things left in them overnight but also tend to be locked up. Be prepared to break into the cars, only hit cars with visible goodies that are worth your while. Use common sense.

Lower-class areas, the best you will find left in cars are old cd's, some smokes, maybe an old cell phone or old GPS, spare change, but that's about it. Not worth the risk and trouble, generally.

Tips: He stressed that iff you are black, mexican, asian, native, mixed, whatever - try not to get seen at all. People in MI are incrediby racist and will call the cops regardless of whether you are actually DOING anything. Seriously. Be careful. He said the #1 thing to being successful at this is to not get seen. If a car comes around, regardless of whether it is a cop or not, hide behind the landscaping, a wall, tree, or if there isn't anything to hid behind, lay flat on the ground. He said the reason most folks get caught is by having some asshole neighbor drive by at 1am coming come from the strip joint and calling the cops on you. Prowlers are taken very seriously here because of people ripping the copper plumbing out of all the foreclosed houses and off cell towers.

Where we live, people get up as early as 2am because everyone and their brother works on the assembly line, so he said you have to gauge your "active time" based on what kind of area you are hitting. Rich folks tend to be unconcious after 11pm, but on weekends, he said to be on the safe side, bump it up to a 12:30am start time. Don't be out later than, say, 4am or you risk getting caught by early risers (especially old folks.) Middle class and apartments/condos/townhouses are super risky due to the lighting and too many people on unemployment who are up literally all hours of the night. Proceed with extreme caution on those areas, and be ready to run.

Areas where the apartments/condos are more on the safe side is in suburban areas. He said as far as a general warning goes, try to not operate within city limits if at all possible, because they have their own police force. Stick to out of the way areas that rely on sheriff's department or state police for their patrols. Don't hit cars on Friday or Saturday nights, when the cops are most active, on the lookout for loud parties, speeders, and drunks. He said the best day of the week to carshop as far as safety goes is Sunday - people are in bed earlier so they can get up for work. Overall, from Sunday through Thursday being ideal. Friday, Saturday = carshop at your own risk.

Have fun kiddies!

Good thread. On a related note, you can still post in an archived thread, that doesn't mean it's closed.
