If I posted something noobtarded forgive me its my first post in this section. I tried the archives but couldn't find exactly what I wanted.
I want to make some tannerite compound and was looking for aluminum powder for it. My question is, if I buy some aluminum powder from Ebay am I basically signing my name on a government watch list or something similar.
I buy guns fairly regularly and will be putting in a form 1 for a manufactured suppressor soon and don't want to be getting denied for those things because I bought a pound or two of aluminum powder.

Why are you super-duper sketched out about legally buying something you can legally own? How old are you?
I would say being a member of this message board community is a bigger disqualifying factor than "shit I bought on ebay."
Aluminum isn't regulated in any manner. Nobody is going to report you for suspicious activity if you buy a couple pounds of it (just make sure you know the difference between spherical and flake before dropping the money on it--shit is pretty pricey to go making mistakes on).
The feds won't ever run a check on your ebay purchase history, regardless of what tax stamped items you're looking to purchase--and in the chance of Hell freezing over, and they DO check it--Aluminum powder has MANY uses. Too many to bother looking into what you used it on.
If you get caught making tannerite, though... I don't really know the laws on that. It's legal to own, but might fall under some absurd criminal act if you "manufacture" it.

When producing tannerite make sure you use flaked aluminum powder, 25 micron should do the trick.

Its also perfectly legal to own Sudafed but they keep it behind the counter and scan your drivers license every time you buy it.
I am not freaked out about buying it, I just don't want to get my tit in the wringer over buying a couple of pounds of aluminum powder. I am 35 but don't see how its relevant. I am not super paranoid, but the less I am on the governments radar the better. If you think buying that kind of stuff goes unnoticed you are a fool. The government watches way more than you think.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't got that far yet, just researching at the moment. The 95/5 ammonium nitrate/aluminum powder mix sound right to you?

If you are using AN/Al or Ammonal as it is also called, as composition i would go with a ratio of 85/15 AN/Al.
Commercial compositions of tannerite often also contain ammonium perchlorate. I think if you were to add this into the mix you would end up with a more sensitive end product. This is good as a sensitive composition will be easier to initiate with a gunshot.

The tannerite compositions I have in my notes are 95% oxidizer and 5% catalyst (usually ammonium nitrate and fine aluminum powder). Another tannerite comp which is more sensitive consists of the oxidizer portion being 75% ammonium nitrate and 25% ammonium perchlorate, and the catalyst portion consisting of 95% Al powder and 5% zirconium hydride.
You can sensitize it by adding 3% antimony trisulfide also. Btw, does anyone think ANFO could be detonated with a supersonic projectile?
To the OP: There are many legitimate uses for Al powder first off. And if you're really that worried about being watched they are mostly concerned with indian blackhead and german dark Al because of flash powder manufacture, so just buy Al of a slightly higher mesh size.

I don't really think the AP would be necessary. Anything I hit it with will be going 3000fps or faster and hits like a hammer. But I will keep it in mind if I have ignition problems.

After my initial post I realized the other uses for it AL powder, but thanks for differentiating between the types. I think more of a problem would be getting the AN. I sometimes hunt with a guy who works at fertilizer plant but I imagine that AN is pretty closely watched and haven't talked to him about it yet.
