Maybe you're confusing every Russian had a loved one die because of Bolshevism or Stalin. Remember that lovingly fun guy? Hitler made the fatal mistake of thinking lower of the Slavic peoples and thus not doing what the U.S. did in the Middle East and use the disgruntled minority in the territory they conquered to there advantage. Instead they blew them off and only near the end of the war did Germany send in the Einstazgruppen to ethnically cleanse the undesirables when the war was all but lost. His last hoorah he tried to give Russia before it was all over.

Of course atrocities happened on both sides, shit happens, but blame the Russian government for not giving two shits about there citizens safety. At least all the other nations during the war tried to move there civilians to areas that weren't under immediate threat. Unlike the Allies, Germany wasn't nearly as inclined to do what is now U.S. and Russian policy these days and murder civilians at will when the area is known to not harbor any military or strategic threat.
