Anyone ever done it? What did you drive? Did you do well?
I'm looking for something fun to do this summer. I don't think I want to screw around with drag racing yet, so has anyone given autocrossing a shot?

I've given it a go a few times at a local course set up in a church parking lot.. I've run my Eldorado, my Lincoln Mark VIII, and my Crown Victoria. The Eldorado did fairly well, supposedly pulls .86g stock which isn't bad for a FWD luxury car. The Mark has a weak ass chassis - whenever I get the motivation and funds to rebuild the front suspension, it's getting upgraded F&R swaybars, strut tower bar, rear shock brace, a redone rear seat X brace, and subframe connectors. The Vic I ran once, I would've been in the top 5 (of about 50 people) for time, but the course was wet so I took out a couple of cones..

LOL, crown vics at an autocross.
I would imagine the best sorts of cars are small, cheap, light little cars. Preferably RWD, though small hot hatches would be fairly quick as well.
Maybe this summer if I get a diesel Jetta and they're running X's in a parking lot somewhere I'll have a crack :D

Oh yeah, that's what I was going to put in my reply; It's typical of a Crown Vic to take out a bunch of cones. They go over/through everything without giving a shit.

MX5s/Miatas are very popular in the UK for autocrossing.

very popular here too.
I've done it in my volvo 3 times. It does very well if I turn traction/spin control off, as long as I can keep it from spinning the tires TOO much on turns.
Car is mostly stock besides sway bars

Hey, it would beat your van :p
One of the top times was put in by a stock motored Saturn SL2.

Oh I'm sure it would. It isn't hard to go faster than a brick, but I wouldn't take my van through an autocross. It's just the wrong vehicle for it.

Meh. The attitude of this particular event is really laid back. It's kind of... show up, hang out, run the course, just have fun. Doesn't matter what you drive or how well you can compete really. Although like I said, the Vic definitely held it's own..

I'd really like to do autocrossing/autotesting, even in my stock FWD 1.3 Corolla. I'd like to do it in a classic car though, MG Midget/MGB would be wicked.

Oh yes, I understand that. It's just with my vehicle I'd have to go no more than half the speed of everyone else. If I try and whip the thing around any corners with any attempt at being brisk, the thing would probably topple over :p
All my friends have nice, fast cars but they're all in bits.

Ditto, my Fifth Ave rolls like a motherfucker. I need to get some sway bars or something, it's just rediculous.

Shit son! Details/Plans? The wires on my blue one basically fell apart before I took care of them. Stock they arent the fastest or best handling cars, BUT with a grand of investment you can rip faces. Another grand and you can chuff domes.
