ive been seeing a lot of gracie combat commercials recently and i was just wondering if anybody ever tried it. can you really learn it well from watching it on tv or is it something you would need an instructor for? anything you have to say about it would be appreciated.thanks

I know for a fact that Gracie Jiu Jitsu is VERY effective in a real fighting situation, and you can probably learn alot of the basics from watching the videos and training with a partner. But to really advance your technique and knowledge, you'll need to join a good school and receive real instruction.

Just remember, it's a ground fighting system (like wrestling). That means you won't be able to defend against more than one opponent, and you will have trouble in some positions if he pulls a knife.

IIRC Gracie combat system (I don't even know if that is what it's called) is a different thing to their BJJ, like a self defence seminar or course thing.

I train with a bunch of former Gracie students. The keyword being former because at some point each Gracie student realizes the limits placed on Gracie style Jiu Jitsu. For the people I train with, it was mainly because they wanted to get into MMA and the Gracie schools, while having excellent grappling classes, provide mediocre striking classes. A few of them just left the schools because they had built names for themselves in MMA and just decided to start their own schools.

Make sure you are comfortable with where your local Gracie's place is at. My local one looked like a dump, was too small, and my father, who was a student of Karl Geis for a few years, mentioned the lack off a padded floor, essential in learning throws and falls. Don''t know if the combat system teaches throws.

If its defense combat, I'd look at Krav Maga. I've heard some good things from a few friends taking it.

You need real life fights to really learn how to defend yourself.

An instructor will be able to show you the ropes, but if you've never used it in a combat situation before, it's not going to be much use.
