After over a year of being homeless on/off and much thought Ive finally decided to embark on an epic adventure across the country by means of freight hopping, and hitchhiking where necessary. Ive already obtained the 2008 Crew Change Guide (http://hitchwiki.org/en/Crew_Change_Guide) and I also have several railroad maps for the country and the states I will be traveling through.

While I know this could possibly be the worst experience of my life, I think it could potentially be the best. In the event that I do go through with this, I will be traveling with 1-2 people slightly younger than me(I'm 20), both of which share common ideological views with me.

I gave up the life of consumerism and superficial materialism some time ago and have absolutely no problem sleeping outside, dumpster diving food or going without cleansing for extended periods of time. My major concerns are having fun and living. I want to cross the beautiful skyscraper-free endless fields, swim in every lake/river in my path, camp out in the mountains, lounge worry free on the beaches of SOCAL, go to some awesome shows in East Bay, smoke some great Northern California buds, do some tree sitting in Oregon, etc etc etc. All with no worries other than 'where do I want to go next?'.

This adventure starts here In Chicago and we will be traveling through Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington. While I would truly want to return here to my friends, seeing as theyre all I have, all 3 of us have different plans after the summer. Im not sure what I want to do yet, stay out there or come back. Person B wants to come back for sure, and person C wants to stay out west for sure.

Comments, concerns, suggestions and input of any kind very welcome.

tl;dr, lets talk about worry free hobo living, traveling about the land with no real destination.

Hey Hobo,

More and more you seem like a crusty. That's cool.

Are you planning on coming through California?

EDIT: Cool pictures. Where were they taken?

Seriously get a knife.... Look up those fork and knife Swiss army knifes or even just a Swiss army knife... Things are fucking life savers from can opening to even using the knife as a "fork" if worse comes to worse.

Make sure things are tied down and to get extra ID to keep in your bag and on your person just in case.

There was a thread about it not too long ago I'll see if I can dig it up later on... I posed some descent stuff in there.

Haha yeah. I'm def going through Cali. Theres a freight line that goes from just south of Chicago straight to San Francisco. I then wanted to go South because I know people in the San Diego and Riverside areas, then back up to Berkley and San Jose where I also know people.

Where are you in Cali? You guys got a collective scene I could maybe bunk in a couple nights or so? Food not bombs house etc. That would be sweet cause another thing I wanna do is find a bunch of cool anarchist/collective living scenes and maybe get in to some local dissent while I'm in the area.

I found the pictures, taken by "polaroid kid" here (http://svr84.ehostpros.com/~plrds84/images/)

I'm pretty sure I could find some sweet portable shit for pretty cheap at the thrifty. Maybe even a little metal pack kit(or whatever its called).

And I got a few ID's already so that shouldnt be an issue

Some kid from a book, that was wandering around aimlessly. Then decided to go up to alaska, crossed a frozen river, dicked around for about 6 months, couldn't swim across the river so he tried to keep on surviving, ate some moldy potatoes because he was delirious with starvation, then died.

He was a shit head. U'll be fine

Do this, bro. This sounds like it could be pretty awesome. I'd definitely get a knife or something for self-defense, though, and not just as a multifunctional can-opener (don't get me wrong, I'd bring a Swiss Army knife, too).

I probably will end up bringing a knife of some sort, even though I try to think the best of people, you can never be too sure. I definitely want to document this in some way, with either pictures or a journal of some sort. A journal would be easiest considering a camera is likely to get broken, but pictures would be so much better.

Bring a knife and don't be stupid and you'll be fine. I've done quite a bit of hitchhiking and
if you're discerning you're way more likely to meet extremely nice people than anyone
that'd do you harm.

Train hopping on the other hand holds a LOT of potential for the shit to get kicked outta you.
Not a bad idea to hop off before you hit the station, cause you'd really be better off never meeting
a bull. I've had friends get beaten pretty bad.

Some decent tips here: http://everything2.com/title/Hopping%2520a%2520freight%2520train

Good luck! You've got a couch and a shower in Oregon if you want one.

I know this may shock you, because you haven't read every law and stat in every legal journal, but if you go outside for once, instead of moderating Internet forums all day, you might find out that there are mean people EVERYWHERE! In EVERY situation! :O Leave Hobo alone - he's living his life to the fullest, how he wants to. If he said he wanted to go skydiving, would you shove statistics down his throat about skydiving accidents? Probably - but bad shit will happen no matter what. You can't prevent it, and he's an adult. He knows. But if you don't live life to the fullest, you'll regret it. Precautions are fine, but seriously, stop arguing with him about it. And more than likely, he'll be fine.

Lysergic Rain: Thats awesome. Thats more living than most people could ever even dream of. Ive done enough drugs and partying for 10 lifetimes, trust me. And Ive definitely showered more than enough in my days. Missing one here or there is no biggy. Cleanliness is NOT next do godliness.

If anybody suggests catching a train north into Canada, I wouldn't recommend it. "Bulls" have more power than any other police institution in Canada. They can shoot first and ask questions later and don't hesitate to exercise their power. Every man who has worked for the railroad for a span of time has a story or two about someone they've seen severely beaten or shot for trespassing on the yards or walking the rails. These are not just stories.

That being said, good luck and have fun with it. There are always new worries, I hope you aren't idealizing it.

I hope you give hygiene the barest nod at least and remember to maintain short hair. There's a very good chance that you'll get bugs on and in your skin if you're spending this kind of time outdoors, but you don't have to provide them with a fluffy place to hang out. Not to mention that long hair is not your friend if someone decides that it's time for a fight.

Will you have enough money in savings to get off the streets if you choose? Do you have any practical skills?

I wouldnt even think of freight riding across the border, that would be suicide.

Though I'm typically pretty idealistic, I know theres going to be a low of worries. Having enough food and water in between cities, unfriendly freight riders, bigot assholes in small towns, being robbed or beaten while sleeping, getting hurt by the train and many many more things.

Hygiene isnt much of a concern, but we wont get in to that.

I have no savings or job. I have exactly $0.67. I have a feeling that if I take this trip I may end up liking it to the point of no return. As far as practical skills go; Since Ive gone vegan Ive become quite the chef, I clean, sew, garden, I'm excellent with computers(fixing, programming, web design etc) and I rely very strongly on the ethics of DIY culture.

*all my e-stalkers grab pen and paper*

I live in Humboldt County. It's about 300 miles north of San Francisco.

It's a great community for bums, punks, stoners, hippies. Basically, youth.

I don't know about any "food not bombs houses."

But the there's a town here called Arcata. It's sorta like a University town.

So there's plenty of punks, activists, art-fags, bums.

That town would be your best bet for seeking out a situation similar to the one you are looking for.

Another thing:
I know a guy who's wrapped-up in DIY/up the punx/food not bombs.

He's a great guy who loves helping/spreading information, so you can email him, if you want, and ask if he knows any good places to squat in California.

He'll no doubt get you connected:

progress_asifsurvivalmattered@yahoo.com

Good luck.

P.S. - I wouldn't suggest being vegan on the road.

Food is going to be hard enough to acquire, without limiting yourself to what you can eat.

Not only that but meat has what plants crave. Electrolytes.

You'll want that extra energy.

Know what I mean ...?

Cleaning is a skill, without question, and gardening can be parleyed into landscaping. I would suggest finding a line of work for when you need to pick up a few dollars here and there. As a hobo, you aren't going to find a lot of people willing to hire you to work on computers.

Do you know how to fight?

Also, from what I understand, you're drunk on a regular basis. You might want to get used to being sober, but that one depends on you.

What happens if you don't like it?

The only home I know is the open road...

Man I know exactly where yer comin' from. I spent 2 years squattin and traveling the east coast, best time of my life...and I'll be right back to it, as soon as I get my legal shit completely taken care of. It's a great life, but it can be tough as fuck. If you've got a travelers heart and don't mind being cold and hungry a lot, it's fucking awesome. There's all kinds of way to get free food and whatnot, especially in bigger cities.

Haha now I'm remembering all my good times, spangeing for booze and chillin in parks...man I fucking miss it, I can't wait to get back on the road.

Does your pacifism preclude knowing how to fight or defend yourself? There are so many different interpretations of what it means to be a pacifist.

Nobody told me that you drink; it's just something I gathered from a thread or two of yours/Expl0itz in GS. Something like this could be a good chance to move away from habitual drinking.

I don't know about your life, but this is quite the venture.

You need need to "go without cleansing" just find camground/rv parks along the way, walk around until you find a back entrance or jump a fence and just go use the showers there most places have one. You can use the hand dispenser soap for free. Worst that can happen is you get asked to leave the grounds. As for food, lol dumpster diving. Just rob small amounts from grocery stores or dine and dash. Grubby bastard.

As Euda says a little bit of money saved up can be the best thing ever. But move away from habitual drinking? Not much is better for the poor traveling man than a bottle. A few shots will make those miles non existent on your weary legs.

I wonder, I'm thinking of catching out from Iowa to Vancouver, Canada via the CN line and maybe coming back loop-de-loop style, but I have no knowledge of the lines at that point (other than Union Pacific, d'oh!, forgot to check that one out).

As I said earlier in the thread:

If anybody suggests catching a train north into Canada, I wouldn't recommend it. "Bulls" have more power than any other police institution in Canada. They can shoot first and ask questions later and don't hesitate to exercise their power. Every man who has worked for the railroad for a span of time has a story or two about someone they've seen severely beaten or shot for trespassing on the yards or walking the rails. These are not just stories.

Hope you're enjoying the countryside, Hobo.

Well I've been through quite a few...but here's a few I can remember off the top of my head

Silvis
Molene
Rock land
Davenport
Iowa city
Coralville
Des moines
Council bluff
Omaha
And im in lincoln now

Couldn't catch a ride out of lincoln and its cold so I was lookimg for a place to sleep...and ended up on the 9th floor of the lincoln cornhusker merriot hotel in the emergency stairwell...hahha.

Also, I managed to pick up some disposable cameras, so there will be pix eventually

Anyway, I gotta get some sleep. Gotta be up in a few hours to catch out.

Nice! Are you strictly train hopping for now, or what?

I'm a little south of Omaha and east of Lincoln, so I know this area pretty well. I'm actually heading over to Lincoln in a few hours, but even if you're still here, I'm really busy and wouldn't be able to meet up or anything, sadly. Too bad that I can't either, considering you're so close by - even assuming you'd want to.

Pictures would be really cool, and maybe if you do something like this again I'll be available to do something too.

Good luck though

I'll pull some updates from his facebook :D Hope he doesn't mind.

Thanks Expl0itz.

I'm currently in Oakland staying at a punk house/collective. I met a crusty kid at a capitalism discussion at an infoshop in Berkeley which changed my plans.

I was gonna hitch hike from Sacramento to Chicago down I-80 tomorrow, but instead i'm gonna be traveling with the crusty kid. Were taking a freight train out of oakland to Portland, where well be catching another freight train east to Minnesota, and then catching another one East to Chicago.

Also, there will be no pictures. My backpack was stolen which contained the disposable cameras. im gonna try and spange up enough cash to pick up at least one more camera for the rest of the trip though.

Cool thread -- my friends and I are going to become tramps for about a month or so. They're 16 and 19, and I'm 21. We intend on bringing a minimal amount of money and surviving via dumpster diving, generosity, and other means.

We're going to be leaving on the 6th of this month via train out of Portland, Maine. I read an article someone linked about hopping trains and what-not, but I cannot find a crew change chart anywhere on the internet. I don't know any hobos, either.

Anyone have any tips?

I picked this Hobo up in Santa Ana, he stayed at my house for a night in Riverside, then we went down to San Diego and Ocean Beach for three days.

He's 20 and hasn't lived with his parents in years.
generosity
Some people are very generous (we got some 20 dollar bills) but more people aren't. Don't actually ask people for money, you'll normally only get pocket change. Fly a sign.
I cannot find a crew change chart anywhere on the internet
I had the 08 crew change on my computer for a while, but I recently deleted it.

Bring warm clothes, and be able to dress in layers. I didn't, it sucked. It gets cold on a rooftop at night, and when you only have shorts and a flannel, its no fun.

Latest update from Hobo:
I went from berkeley to oakland where I stayed at a collective for a few days. From there caught a train to roseville. There to dunsmuir. There to eugene. There to portland. Split up with all the people I was traveling with and took a train on my own. Got kicked off and ticketed in spokane wa. Hitched to idaho and took another train. Got off in w hite fish and met a shit ton of travelers. After hanging out for a while left with 5 of them. 3 of us got seperated from the other 2 cause we got kicked off in east glacier. Hitch hiked from there to browining -> shelby -> great falls -> billings -> laurel. Caught a train fmro laurel to cheyenne. Got kicked off. Spanged enough money for 3 greyhound tickets to denver from here. Its my shift to stay awake while the other 2 are passed out waiting for our bus to come in 10 minutes. Staying in denver for 3 days, taking a train to chicago, staying there for a few days, taking a train to Pittsburgh...dunno whats after that!

No he's not, he's right. If you want to be another statistic reading chump that lives in a bubble than more power too you. Lifes not about statistics, life is about not looking back in 15 years and saying "damn i wish I would have done that" lifes about living it now because you never know when you won't be able to live it. If you die doing something you love than it was worth. You get one chance why not live how you wanna live and never look back? To me that's the only way to live. Hobo's idea sounds awesome but it's not for me, more power to him though and i hope he has the time of his life on his journey.

P.S. - I wouldn't suggest being vegan on the road.

Food is going to be hard enough to acquire, without limiting yourself to what you can eat.

Not only that but meat has what plants crave. Electrolytes.

You'll want that extra energy.

Know what I mean ...?

I've become quite an experienced freight hopper, disregarding the warrants in Nebraska and Washington,

Ive been through Iowa, nebraska, colorado, utah, nevada, california, oregon, washington, idaho, montana and Wyoming. I then went back through Colorado and spent some time in Denver..

I met my girlfriend in Denver

I'm back in Chicago for a short bit

I'm catching a train to Pittsburgh in 4 days

After Pittsburgh I'm going to Philly, then Richmond Virginia

After that it's back to Denver for a short bit

Then to the 7 most southern states for the winter (excluding cali)

Ive also(unfortunatly) obtained a new addiction...and I'll post something much more detailed when I'm not nodding off on H...

I knew coming to Chicago was going to be a bad idea...but I did it anyway! Now that my friends are all passing judgement upon me prior to talking to me, I'm leaving once more, with absolutely no plan for return. I'm clean again, and I can safely say I'll never be using dope again. It was a terrible experience and the aftermath was even worse.

One of my traveling friends is strung out on dope with his new boyfriend and the other is nowhere to be found with some junkie chick we met. I have decided to leave today after spanging enough money for train food.

I was spanging outside the library waiting for it to open and met another transient whom I will be leaving with. Plans have changed once more. We are catching out tonight going to a punk fest in Ann Arbor that starts next week.

These are my ideal plans after that:
Virginia for another punk fest
Denver for about a month
New Orleans for Halloween
Then from Pensacola Florida to Austin Texas for the winter

However...when it comes to traveling, plans never work out, so I already know that the above stated is likely to change.

No one passed any judgment on you when you came back, until you brought up the whole H thing. Your friends, who might I add, that have been there for you since long before you took up this lifestyle supported you in your decision to go about your little trip. People didn't want you to go, but figured that if you really wanted to go out and try and find yourself, then you were going to do it anyway. You may think that people have written you off, but the sad truth is, you're writing all your friends off with this "I have no plans on coming back" bullshit. You're pissing people off who were there to support you. Who gave you a place to rest your head when you were out on your ass. People who didn't care if you didn't have money for alcohol, cigarettes or food, because they were your friends and enjoyed the company.

Think about this long and hard, Kurtis. You're going to be throwing away all the bad things by never coming back, but you're also throwing away all the friends that love and care about you, too. By trying to find yourself, which is what we all know you're trying to do, you're going to be losing yourself much more and your 'family'. Are you completely prepared to give me, and all your other true friends a big FUCK YOU! and just quit and walk away?

If you are prepared to give every one a big FUCK OFF then you may as well just say it. Since by leaving with no plans on returning and that you are writing everyone off, there shouldn't be any problem by saying that. There shouldn't be any pages left unturned, and no questions unanswered, Kurtis. Just know though, that your TRUE friends, those who were there from the beginning, aren't going to be so eager to try and help you when you're in need after you walk away from us all.

You don't need to go about this traveling Hobo lifestyle any more. You had your fun, and you saw the country. Now come back home and get your head on straight. You need to pull your head out of your ass and put your life back together. You can still have your ideals, but you don't need this lifestyle. Think about this, and MAYBE it will help put things into perspective for you. When you were a young kid, and you saw the hobos on the streets, did you think to yourself "Hey, that's awesome. I want to be like him when I get older!" No, you didn't. I'm sure you thought the exact same thing that everyone else did. I'm sure it went something like "Wow, he made some bad choices, and I sure I hope that I don't end up in his position." I'm sure those 40 year old bums that you see on the street had the same thought as you when you started out. "Fuck the man! Fuck them and how screwed up this system is! It's not fair, blah blah blah." I bet you that they wish they had something now. I bet you they wished that they didn't give up on themselves. I don't want to see you give up on yourself, and I'm sure no one else does either.

A much better apporach would have been to humbly request that he keep in touch or eventually come back because he's wanted, rather then getting emotional like a girl, butt-hurt about all you gave, and then even offensive about his plans.

A message that concerns no one but himself. I understand what he's trying to accomplish, and if he wants to make that choice, then whatever. I'm trying to get him to think about a bigger picture than just the bullshit that's going on now. I'm being a real friend here, and wanting him to succeed in life instead of laying in a gutter for the rest of his life. This is what real friends do, and maybe he will realize that. Maybe he wont. I'm just telling him how things are going to happen with this big FUCK YOU GUYS that he's putting out there. You don't need to be a bum to experience the world and all it has to offer, and I would suggest that you quit being so closed minded and spewing such bullshit.

In terms of "living in the gutter", you truly just wouldnt understand. I didnt understand at first either. The lifestyle is unexplainable, but Ive never been happier. Ive lived and experienced more since I left than I had in the 20 years prior.

Yesterday morning we tried to catch an IM/DS stack train with an unknown destination but it was going too fast so we got drunk instead. Shortly after, a GM train pulled up so we hopped in separate grainers. I fell asleep and woke up to another IM/DS with an unkown destination 4 tracks over, so hopped in a well.

Assuming this train was going to either New York or Baltimore after it proceeded E instead of S, we thought we were going to get off at the first CC and hitch to Toledo...but instead of waking up at our desired location, we woke up in Columbus Ohio...

Dunno, whats the plan next?

Hobo
08-08-2009, 05:27 PM
This is gonna be a long detailed post BTW cause its raining and Im not too fond of catching on the fly in the rain...

Yesterday was quite odd. I had really weird vibes all day...

We spanged enough money for bus fare and rode way out towards a truck stop to try and hitch to Toledo, from which we could take a train to Ann Arbor. Turns out, hitch hiking is illegal in Ohio. Go figure.

We then took another bus to a "catch out spot" along a junction. The only NBD train was empty coal cars, which arent ideal to ride....I learned that the hard way. 10ft tall walls with no ladders on the inside...

So, we got drunk. We then went towards the Ohio state univ. area to spange(too ugly to prostitute, need $ for boob job) and drink while doing so. Then I met a girl. I do not however remember her name, I just remember she was from south Africa. And she was 24(or maybe 23?)

She invited me to the bar to have some drinks with her, so naturally I went. I dont have ID, but she talked to the bouncer then grabbed my hand and pulled me in with her. We talked for a few hours about the collapse of western civilization, capitalism, religion, etc. and exchanged the typical "what nots" of these situations.

THEN I met her friend. Her friend gave me shots and proceeded to flirt with me quite heavily as well...and then invited me to her house. Once again, I do not remember her name because she was also foreign, from Ireland, but she was 36.

I was quite aware of her intentions, but went anyway. A few other people came, we drank some beers and what not. I was fucking plastered at this point and instead of sleeping with this chick, I decided to utilize her couch and the offer of a place to stay...and crashed like an unmanned freight train.

I awoke to a cute xo note, an offer for a shower and some morning munchies. I upped the munchies and broke out. And now I'm sitting here in the library rambling on and on and on about this 1 single day, waiting to catch on another blind GM train.

Possible departure plans are as follows:
If the GM train takes me to Toledo, I'm going to ride a small freight line to Ann Arbor for punk week.

If it takes me to Willard, I'm gonna go to either Baltimore or New york, depending on which train comes first.

If it takes me to Indianapolis, I'm gonna catch a train from there to Kansas City, from which I can catch a train to Denver.

One day of my adventure, over and out.

Erorr:"Space bag" Is a box of franzia wine, with the bag removed.

And yes, a bridge. Luckily I didnt actually break anything. I cant do much with my left wrist because its fucked and my lower spine/tailbone are so fucked up I cant sit/stand/walk for more than a few minutes without excruciating pain.

Had I not met this awesome girl Josie though, I wouldve been in a lot worse of shape as she literally forced me to go to the hospital the next day and shes been basically doing everything for me.

Maybe I'll come with you if you plan on continuing your journey.
or maybe we can just meet and chill for a while and I could hook you up with some gear. I live close to the large CSX yard in Waycross. You'll most likely end up in my town if your going to south Georgia or passing thru to Florida.

I support this thread. Everyone should do this once in their life.
You'll learn so much about yourself. What you are made of and what not.
You'll learn the true meaning of creativity and resourcefulness.

I had a friend from my teen years. Bout ten years ago. One day she just
disappeared. She had talked about something like this for awhile.
She finally found me about two years ago. Turns out one day
she just grabbed a backpack and some needed things and started
walking. Didn't surprise me. Once in awhile i would get a postcard.

She's one of the most amazing people i know. Partly because of doing this.

Space bag = Goonbag.

Funnily enough they're very popular in Australia with boongs, bums, and students alike, as it's about $10-$12AUD for 4 litres of that fruity lexia and when you're done you can blow the silverly bladder up to make a nice pillow if there's no ditches or soft ground on which to pass out. Adjust softness by releasing little increments of air from the valve. I believe this marvelous invention has migrated to the US, where they've cunningly figured it all out pretty quickly.

Usually ending a night on the piss by moving onto goon in the early hours ends up with me diving into a freezing cold body of water or pool off someone's roof or out of a tree while fully clothed, chain smoking half a pack of shit-house cigarettes while the sun rises before passing out somewhere, and waking up wearing womens clothing with a swollen injured ankle or two and a busted head.

Two bonus features of the Goon bag:

You can get someone to cradle the bag in their arms in such a way as they're able to squeeze it like a boa constrictor while fingering the valve, shooting a long stream of high pressure goon straight down your gullet as long as you can keep gulping it down without choking up a bone, and thus don't have to taste much of it.

Believe me, even when blind drunk it tastes like wank and most goon really does taste better when you vomit it bakc up in your mouth.

Then of course there's goon of fortune - but that can pretty only be played in Australia because you guys don't have Hills Hoists.

This to me is not the true form of shedding the capitalist consumerism society. At the end of the day you're pretty much a shit sponge sucking up capitalist waste/garbage and are actually contributing to the big game. If you truly want to live the lifestyle you gotta live in the woods naked and hunt wild game. Clothing is permitted but it must be fashioned out of leaves and sticks. Good luck.

Sometimes ya gotta do what you gotta do. Hitching is hit or miss really. If I'm alone or with a girl its pretty easy to catch a ride, otherwise it can take anywhere from hours to days. I hate hitch hiking and would much rather ride trains.

I'm in Philly now. The last night in Boston was awesome. Some cool hipster dude kicked us down some free acid and we tripped, then got invited to stay the night at this dudes place, then had some expensive beer fed to us in a sweet bar (The Point) by a group of marines.

After that we went to NYC, which sucked ass. It rained the whole time. Left as soon as we could.

Philly is fuckin awesome. Met a bunch of other travelin kids, been kickin it in our bad ass twelve-story squat, drinkin and shit. Gonna be picking up an acordian in a few days.

Sittin at this place I'm housed up at for the night drinkin wine, lookin forward to havin a roof over my head and being showered. Dreading the rest of my hair.

Hopefully gettin a shit ton of free tatts too. I'm gettin some shit on my neck and a "heart A" on my arm.

I'll be updating more detailed in the next week cause I'm gonna be stationed in Philly til the G-20 in Pittsburgh

Yeah dude Im gonna. Shits gonna be so cash.

You can make it here in 5 days, easily. Take the coast-line from Socal to Oakland. Ride an IM from Oakland to Portland. Catch the hi-line in Portland to Chicago. Take the Q-train(IM) from Chicago to Columbus. Hitch from Columbus to Pittsburgh, then to Philly(or ride local junk from Pitts. to Philly)...It could work, in theory!

Edit: Or ride the mid-line from Sacramento to Chicago and follow the other directions after that...would be faster that way other than going through North Platte...

Do it!

@@@: I despise neo-liberalism as much as I do capitali$m. Most agree with the ideological concepts of Anarchism to some extent. Personally, my ideals are rooted in Anarcho-primitivism.

backseat footjobs: Depending on location, security can either be pretty laid back and you can essentially walk on the train, other times in places like Havre MT or North Platte NE, security is so strict that you have to transform in to ninja mode. As far as cars, theyre typically all locked. However, one time I did manage to ride inside a FedEx piggy back(truck trailer on a flat far) because it was empty and unlocked to my surprise.

This is a string of piggybacks

http://www.freefoto.com/images/25/60/25_60_6---Intermodal-Railroad-Train_web.jpg

Typically you have to ride underneath the trailer, where the axle is located. However, if you get lucky, you can occasionally find an empty pig being shipped to be loaded elsewhere and if you're truly lucky it will not be locked and you can ride inside of the trailer, as I state in my previous post.

A) Ride the FEC freight line down to Miami and hitch down highway 1 to the Keys

B) Ride West to Pensecola to hang out with some people, west to NOLA to hang out with some people, then west to Texas to meet back up with Josie.

kAtE-: Thanks

I've decided to compile a list of what I carry, everyday, while traveling.

Firstly and most importantly, my pack. It's a Eureka! Eiger. When stood upright on the ground it comes up to about my waist (I'm 5'4''). Mine is black, not yellow as pictured.
http://www.hikercentral.com/aagraphics/products/1469.jpg

Whats in the pack:

Accordion (currently in New Orleans with Josie. Not actually carried in the pack, carried on my chest)
Harmonica
Sleeping Bag(Lightweight, bought for $28 at army surplus store)
Crew Change Guide
Railroad atlas (x2)
Road atlas/map
Books (Currently Evasion and Fast Track for C Diatonic Harmonica)
Other maps (I try and pick up a map of every major city I go to)
Radio frequency scanner (For listening to railroad frequency and police frequency)
Tooth brush & tooth paste (I have a "zip" bag to keep mine clean)
Long underwear
Long sleeve shirt
Hoodie
Light jacket
Beanie
Extra socks(AT LEAST one extra pair. SOCKS ARE A TRAVELERS BEST FRIEND!)
7'x9' Tarp(strapped to outside of bag)
Crowbar/Squat key/persuader (also strapped to outside)
Compass
Flashlight (head lamp preferred, I currently have a small LED light)
Rope
Carabiners
X-acto knife
Large "magnum" sharpie
Assorted sharpie colors
Small sewing kit (different colors of floss, different sizes of needles)
Patches/material (for sewing)
Disposable camera(s)
Spoon/fork
Water (I keep a small bottle on me at all times, but when hitch hiking/riding trains it is ideal to bring at least a gallon per person)
Food (Non-perishable. When riding trains I try to bring at least 4 cans of food per 24 hours Im going to be on said train. If I'm with someone, double that. Gonna make a post about train food later)

On my belt:

9'' Knife w/ sheath

Dirty Kid Cuisine: Portable and filling food for little to no cost
These are some simple and cheap meals that can be enjoyed on the train due to their portability. Below are a few meals that I personally enjoy whilst riding the rails.

Sloppy Raman
My two traveling companions and I came up with this after being kicked off of our train in Cheyenne Wyoming, just outside of the air force base on the North end of the city. We had ridden here from Laurel Montana, and while we were sleeping going through Casper Wyoming, some big white supremacist hopped in our boxcar. Given there were 3 of us (1 being both black and gay!) he offered up some food as a peace offering: a loaf of bread, peanut butter, jelly and a can of manwich.

When we were kicked off in Cheyenne, the only food we had was a raman packet and this manwich mix and we decided to mix things up. This is pretty simple, can you guess how it goes?

Open manwich (the kind with veggies in it is the best)
Pour in raman (Oriental is vegetarian)
Mix
Mix in raman flavor packet
Bust out your hobo-tool spoon or plastic spoon you pocketed in the last city's fast food place, take a few spoon fulls, enjoy, pass the can

"Hippie chips"
This is pretty simple but I definitely don't recommend it if you're low on water cause it's salty as all hell.

Take a packet of your favorite raman (Once again, oriental is vegetarian)
Smash it up as good as you can without puncturing the bag
Open once side and remove the packet
Open and pour the packet of flavoring in to the bag
Hold the opened side and shake
Enjoy

Train Burritos
These are great but all the can goods can be a hassle to carry around as they add a lot of weight to your pack

Can of beans (I prefer black. Some refried are cooked in lard, making them non-veg, so check labels)
Can of corn
Large burrito tortillas (Wheat FTW)
Hot sauce (Tapatillo or Sriracha/cock sauce/rooster sauce are what I prefer)

Open cans, add sparing amounts(depending on the amount of people you're with) to tortilla to allow others to eat as well, enjoy. If you have a small hobo stove, you could always heat the beans/corn, but it's equally as good without.

Alternatively, replace the beans/corn/hot sauce with peanut/almond butter, jelly and honey. Carry the honey in a bag of some sort though because they just LOVE to explode in your pack and get everything nice and sticky. I of course learned this the hard way.

Scamming the man
Heres a few scams that I use while on the road. I'm not gonna post too many, cause I still gotta use them, but here's a few that might come in handy for others.

$0.50 - $0.60 cup of coffee
Who doesnt love scamming starbucks? I've been incredibly amazed at how few know about this scam. As some may know, starbucks does refills on coffee, making this scam possible.

Find a trash can outside of starbucks and pick up one of the plastic cups. Size or previous contents doesn't matter. Lick your finger and rub the marked area indicating what was previously in the cup, removing it. Take your cup in to the bathroom and rinse it out. Then, simply remove the lid and go to the counter and ask for a refill on ice coffee. It should be about 53 or 54 cents, depending on the area. Pick up a new straw and enjoy your cheap coffee.

Free milk/soy milk
Not really a scam, but comes in handy. Go to any starbucks and ask for a cup of milk/soy milk and 9 times out of ten, they will actually give it to you!

Free 'light rail'
This works anywhere that has a "light rail" system (Portland MAX, Denver RTD, Buffalo Metro, etc) that requires you to purchase a ticket prior to boarding.

This is a fairly easy scam, but you have to pay constant attention to the people boarding. These systems of transport have transit police that randomly board the trains (though I've never seen one) and check for tickets.

The trick is, don't buy a ticket and just get on, as there isnt a worker that checks for tickets when boarding. Sit down, and ride! All you have to do is watch for these workers to board (Theyre not "undercover" so they should be pretty obvious), and if you see one, simply get off the train and wait for the next one to arrive.

Selling suckers their own trash
This is a great scam, but doesnt work everywhere. It requires you to not be scared to hop in a dumpster or two. It also requires you be near a place that buys used movies and video games, such as gamestop

Firstly, head behind every video game store, video rental place, best buy, music store, etc. A lot of times they throw out movies/music/video games for no apparent reason! Loot as much as you can, remember, 9 times of out 10 they will buy anything you bring them. For movies and video games, go to gamestop. For movies and music, go to places such as FYE.

I've even had luck dumpster diving AT gamestop, and selling them their trash right back to them!

Another way to go about this scam is taking all the lovely treasures you find in electronic stores dumpsters, such as keyboards and mice, and taking them to the nearest pawn shop. They wont be worth much, but somethings better than nothing right?

Hey, Hobo, when I rode the bus from Denver to Dallas, there was a dude on the bus that made me think of you. He had a pit bull as a service dog, and I thought that was awesome. I was gonna give the dude my sleeping bag and a pair of coveralls, but he didn't seem like he wanted to talk to anybody so I left him alone.

So have you been to Mexico yet? I've been wanting to go for a bit of debauchery and hopefully find a job teaching in some coastal village, but I'm curious as to what it's like hitching in a foreign country.

Heh. The "service dog" trick is pretty funny, works every time.

I haven't been to Mexico, yet. I'm not sure about hitching there, but I do know that riding trains is a very common forms of transportation and I've been told that it's very rare to ever be the only person on a train.

What kind of work (or scams) are available in Mexico for somebody that just shows up off of a train? Just curious.

I couldn't be so sure cuz I've never done that, and if you just ask for money in the streets people will act indifferent because, well, everyone asks for stuff in the street. You have to be cautious too; street people will obviously notice you are american and, depending on the place, treat you like kings thinking you've got lots of green moneys to spare or try to scam you.

The Starbucks thing does work apparently. There are a lot of places, like big stores, that offer free food samples. Once I lived off free samples at Walmart and other stores for a week because I didn't have food or money, which was cool. There are a lot of stores and convenient stores from which you can also steal easily as long as you are cautious.

If you have any kind of talent, especially if you look like someone foreign; say cards or silly magic tricks; in down town naive people will be amazed and you'll probably receive a bit of money. Food is quite cheap and good here. You can probably eat for an entire week using only 10 dollars if you buy the right stuff.

It depends a lot on the location; I'm only familiarized with this state and this state only; people vary a LOT in different parts of Mexico. You'll know right away which people seem friendly and which not, although you've got to at least understand a little bit of spanish.

I know very basic Spanish. I should probably brush up on it before I go, but it's pretty easy to pick up. I write articles for AC and TB and make around $5 an article. Do you think that writing a few articles a week (or whenever I find a hotspot) would be enough to live on?

I've managed to live on around 20 dollars a week. If you don't pay rent and don't waste money of too much beer and smokes, then you probably could. Wifi hotspots aren't an issue, in this city at least. Food is cheap pretty much everywhere. Get enough money and the beach is an hour away from here... of course it's kinda cold already to visit it.

I saw that you were in philly a while back.....if your ever in NE PA let me know.... Its not 2 bad 6 hours from pitts. 2 hours from NYC and Philly not to mention its an old coal town so tons of rail lines. Freight only tho. Scranton is "steam town" we have train museums dedicated to trains lol. Plus i know a great squat clost to a grocery store and no joke 10 feet from a rail line where there is a nice bend about 300 yards down the way so they slow down right in front of the squat. Alot of car carriers come through....lol.....take a nap on the hood of a lexus...

Thanks for the offers, face_smack360 and blue_monday. I have met up with two people that I know through other websites, ChokingVictim being one of them (and he traveled with me for a short period of time), but none from Zoklet yet.

I do plan on meeting up with dkadt of Zoklet shortly in SC. He has found me a puppy which I'm hella stoked about

Grand Vizier: I'm really considering taking a short little trip down there, and I'll definitely be getting in contact with you if I do.

Pvt.Pathfinder: Thanks for the info. In all honesty, the rail museum is enough incentive to make my way through there, and if I do we'll definitely be in touch

Lucky bastard. Good thing though is that it hasn't started to snow yet. It's getting there though. I saw that your ride bailed on you so did you end up driving still or did you train it all the way there?

Anyways, stay safe.

Oh man has it been beautiful! My ride didn't bail like I had thought...it's a really long story, but I did end up riding with her. I learned how to drive manual trans too! Shit is so easy...hahaha

So far, here are how plans may go:
-Tomorrow I'm leaving Jacksonville headed to Miami, via freight train
-Hitching hiking from Miami to Key West
-Riding freight from Miami to Tampa, after Key West
-Riding freight from Tampa back to Jacksonville
-Freight from JAX to New Orleans for New Years Eve
-Texas, New Mexico, Arizona...California???

Though, as I look back at this thread and my past travels, it's quite pointless to make plans that far in advance considering they never seem to quite work out.

Also, I got a puppy! 7-week old female pure bred pitbull.

A dog can be a tramps best friend, he will protect you, gaurd your gear, and give you company if you end up alone, all in all, if i was going to tramp, i would of course get a dog. Allthough it is one more mouth to feed

Bakayar

i can understand the usefulness of the dog, and it is my fault that this part of the question didnt come through, but, in a nutshell, how do you prevent it from simply running away? i know that dogs are ratherer loyal, hence the title of mans best friend, but wouldnt the inconsistancy of location prove to be a trying circumstance to forge this loyalty?

What I would do for warm weather right now... Yesterday it was 60. The 1st of December and it was 60 out. I was in heaven. I'm glad your ride didn't bail. The last that I saw was that she had and that you were 'stuck' here. 'Tis awesome you FINALLY learned how to drive a stick. How many times did I tell you it was easy as fuck? Never believed me. Though, I'll never forget how hard I laughed when you couldn't figure out how to start my car. I think you still owe me some money from that. :D

Nice doggy too. You better take good care of her

PS. Sarah is coming to town in a few days and she asked if you were still here. I told her no. I guess she's only got Steve to hang out with now while I'm at work.

Good luck on your winter travels. Maybe when it gets warm around these parts you'll be back in town?

Bakayar: Pretty much what backseat footjob said. Traveler pets are the most loyal and obedient pets in the world. I've had my dog for only 3 days and she wouldnt simply "run away". After a short 3 days she's already responding to her name, she already no longer needs a leash because she follows me everywhere, she cries whenever I am not in her sight, and she insists on sleeping on me, nowhere else.

ILOVEZOK: I'll be back around March/April/May, depending on when the retarded Chicago weather decides its gonna warm up.

jd421: I would like to head up to Canada, and I do claim I have plans to next summer...But I'm not completely sure considering I dont know how everything is going to play out in the months leading up to summer, and I could end up somewhere else.

...And so my travels have come to a halt. I caught a felony case down in Key West (completely unrelated to my travels), and after my 14 day stay in the Monroe County jail I was released on the 22'nd with 12 months probation. Given the circumstances under which I'd have to serve out my probation in Key West ('homeless'), I decided to come back to Chicago to wait out the year in order to lower my chances of violating, which would result in two consecutive 364 day sentences.

So, in the meantime I've decided to finish up college since I've got quite some time on my hands here in Chicago. I'm also going to be writing a guide/zine on traveling to post on Zoklet because I know a few people on here that plan to start traveling in the near future.

FL for the Apalachicola Gathering, then either Oregon for a few weeks, or back to NY before heading for San Jose in late April for the MAPS Conference, and back to NY. I really don't want to waste that much time in stranger's cars. Think probation here will show up in other states?

Since my last post: Got my ass beat by a razor wire fence at the train yard in Oakland, had someone buy me an amtrak ticket to Denver.

Stayed in Denver 3 weeks longer than planned because I met some awesome people.

Hopped out of Denver to Chicago for a friends bday

Hopped out of Chicago on a train that was supposed to be headed to Denver

Ended up in Kansas City, Kansas.

Spent 4 days unsuccessfully hitchhiking west through Kansas

Back tracked 50 miles East to Lawrence

Had an AWESOME time in Lawrence, Kansas. Met a girl who bought me a greyhound ticket halfway to Denver. Stayed on the bus all the way here.

In Denver currently, squatting this chicks apartment. Leaving here at the beginning of the month with her, possibly headed to Toronto for the G20.

Really inspiring, don't think I would have the guts to do what you are but you really make me realise how much I'm wasting my life. I'm 21 and have only been outside of like 200 miles from where I was born once. Thanks anyway, gave me something to think about.

So you just kinda drift around, and play music? Sounds badass man. Whenever you're down in Fayetteville, if you are you should hit up me and a few other people from Fayetteville.

A friend and I are planning on hitching from Winnipeg (Canada) down south or southwest. We'd like to see California and the southern states, just generally cool and warm places.

We've never done anything like this before, so asking for hints and tips is a must. What should we expect? What should we look for?

I'll be bringing plenty of writing material and he'll be bringing a guitar. I don't really know what else to say.. any advice?

I'm be homeless in like 2 days again. Denver is a pretty bum friendly city in the summer but the winter will kick your ass. I'll hitch south long before the old man wakes.
