Did you read ALL of the Dune books? Because there are a lot, and they only get better.

Edit: I recommend Isaac Asimov's Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun

Dune is awesome, even though I never read the entire series :(. Just the original, God Emperor and all the prequels. Love how Frank put together far eastern ways and science fiction.

The guy that directed Hancock is working on a new Dune movie.

There's nothing in the same league as Dune. You could give Orson Scott Card a try.

This. Dune was/is epic. Read them again, and then give the Ender's Game series a try.

Dune'd have to be one of, if not the best, sci fi novels of all time. I actually still haven't read the last one in the original series. Kinda hate myself for it.

Definitely read Ender's Game if you haven't. Also maybe give Ringworld and it's sequals and something by Arthur C. Clark (Childhood's End, Rendezvous with Rama) 'n Robert A Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress) a shot. I've also heard Hyperion by Dan Simmons was pretty epic but I personally haven't picked it up.

Not exactly a space opera but the Otherland series by Tad Williams has got to be one of the most epic and expansive works ever committed to paper. Definitely recommended if you're willing to trade space for virtual reality.

That series takes up...

WHY CAN'T I WORK OUT VOLUME.

You should try reading his other series. ConSentiency Involves different alien races. Destination: Void is about a lot of things and is probably closer to Dune.

4.2 Liters of shelf space.

Also, I hated Dune, but need a new series. Is TW a carbon copy of Herbert? Or are there other authors that I don't hate that he writes like?

A long time ago, when I was a teenager - my Dad came home from work and was like "Son, I brought this for you, I'd like you to read it."

It was a copy of "Dune". I've never gotten a chance to read it. I love science fiction and fantasy - so, I take it I'll like "Dune"? Encourage me!

The first one was good. It seems cliche'd because SO MUCH has ripped on it. Really quite iconic. Read it and nothing else in the series.

Yeah, that's what my old man told me. He said not to think it was unoriginal - because it WAS the original sci-fi/fantasy that's themes paved the way for lots of other series to come.

I thought that Dune was amazing. Then the next two books are ok. They're good books; however, they suffer the same fate as Godfather III. They just aren't nowhere near as good as the original, and that disappointment made them poor reads for me.

I found a hard cover Dune at the book store for $5 sometime over a year ago. I thought well, cant pass this deal off. So I bought it.

I think it took me about a week to read it, very interesting and hard to put down. I never went to beyond the first one, though I may reread it someday in the distant future.

My Dad had the Dune books, but later on we got rid of them. I was only about 4 years old, remember seeing a picture of a man riding a giant worm thing, was always interested in it.

One day at the library, saw another book with a giant worm thing, thought it could be the book, rented it- and was hooked!

Although I didn't like the end of the 3rd book, I still think that the original Dune novel is one of the best books I've ever read.

Cheers for the otherland recommendation, I loved the Memory sorrow and thorn trilogy, will have to try William's other series
