I have tests coming up soon and functional writing is a large part of them. Over my years spent on totse I have read some pretty good shit(essays about nudity/off the walls funny shit really).

We did some trial tests back a fews weeks ago and the guys that wrote completly random stuff got high marks. One guy I know wrote about the humourous adventures of a talking tomato as it rolled down a hill. He got high marks.

Another wrote about a biding war between Obama and Michael Jackson, over a couple of black market geese.

Sure I can think of plenty of random things to write. But when it all comes down to writing 4-5 A4's I can barely write more than one.

Any tips/advice would be well appreciated. I would love to be able write good totse humour pieces. But I can't:(.

Good writing can be anything. Just because something is funny, doesn't make it good or bad. Maybe you are focusing too hard on trying to be funny?

I have an idea.

1. What are some things that annoy you in life? It can be things people do or say, or it can be an item.

Example: I hate it when people fiddle with the wrapping on something while I'm trying to concentrate. That is so annoying, to hear "crinkle.........crinkle crinkle..........................................c rinkle crinkle crinkle crinkle"

List stuff like that, so we can get brain storm ideas or whatever the word is. Then we can decide what to write about it specifically. Making something funny or serious is the easy part sometimes. You just need something specific to write about first.

We did this thing in my writing class that turned out really well. Basically the teacher had a bunch of prompts; there was a list of random words for three categories. The categories were characters, setting, and plot. And basically you would just pick three random numbers, then look at the lists and see what prompts you got, and you had to write a story based on that. I ended up with an archeologist at the mall who becomes very jealous, and it ended up turning into a pretty awesome story. It's neat because it's entirely random, and it definitely becomes something entirely different from what you intended when you started. So maybe try that? Make a list, kind of like mad libs, of totally random situations and characters and locations and then just pick them at random and try and turn those into a good piece of writing.
