And not only are there some seriously talented artists not getting their deserved props but there is an ungodly amount of shitty music out there increasing exponentially daily.
Case in point: GZA released a new album last year that almost nobody heard, some really interesting and - holy shit - intelligent lyrics that aren't just 'I got gun I got ladies I so great'. Meanwhile morons are throwing money and poontang at 50 Cent because he busts out the totally deep and witty metaphor of a lollipop representing a penis (a little out of date I know but it was just on the radio). The fuck!? Seriously I'm asking you all, THE FUCK?
EDIT: GZA is hardly 'underground' but nobody needs an example of good music unnoticed/bad music rewarded, we all know it's true.

It's because most people know nothing about anything, and have the intelligence of a common snail. I just resolved your mystery for you!

People don't know what good music is because they've never heard good music. They don't care about meaningful lyrics or proper composition. As long as it's got a catchy tune or lets them fantasize about material wealth, they're satisfied.

Alot of good acts don't have mass appeal (ie: they don't appeal to the lowest common denominator ) so they're relegated to indie status. They don't get nearly the amount of exposure a major label would provide, so people don't know what they're missing. They just listen to what they're told to listen to.

GZA's new album was weak compared to Liquid Swords. But then again, that's one of the best albums of all time.

Basically this. Mainstream music is put out by the major labels (the corporations man ). They only care about what sells. Intelligence doesn't sell. Just stuff that's mildly catchy or hops on the next band wagon. Rap is just the next thing. So that's what we get.

Screw Clear Channel. Turn that radio off.

Nothing's touching Liquid Swords for a long while. Compare ProTools to most new stuff, though...
