Armstrong titanium. Produced by spraying titanium tetrachloride vapor into a stream on molten sodium. Something like 1000 mesh. Crazy reactive. Psyco_1322 and I have a coulple pounds each. :D We got it for a couple bucks a pound from some guy at PGI. Keep it mind that Ti of any pyro kind is usually around $18-24/lb :D

I can see how it seems like a good idea to get people to learn stuff and for us to pool our collective information...but it's also spoon feeding if we just say "it's all on the wiki". I had to do my own research when I first got here, and so should others. PYRO CAN KILL YOU, and if you are too lazy not to research what the hell you are doing, you should not be doing it in the first place. I'm cool with helping new people understand things, but im not going to spoon feed ANYONE. This is a show we did for some company party, the funny part is that we shot from a 20 by 5 meter barge in the middle of Copenhagen harbour and lit everything by hand.
Yes, I know, lighting by hand isn't special in any way, but we had to shoot from a rather confined area, and there wasn't really anywhere to duck down when they went up, so it can be a bit interesting firing, and keeping track of the various units while you're getting slammed by the exit of several racks of 4" going in rapid succession and sparks are pouring down on you.:)

I can't remember exactly how much we got up that night, but it was something like this:

Numerous chain linked 30mm batteries, too many to remeber.
72 2.5" shells.
48 4" shells.
27 6" shells.

It was a good night, I smelled nice afterwards...:)

EDIT: Originally we had planned it to roughly 15 minutes, but we had a fog rolling in so we cut it down to about 11 minutes, sorry about not getting it all on tape but I was kind of busy and nowhere near the camera.

Nice SHARP! Unfortunately all the commercial shows I have crewed on have been 3" and under due to space restrictions.

I love hand lighting single shells... But I wouldn't be very comfortable doing it in a show. I helped set up a show a while back, all electrically fired. The lead operator and his buddy were sitting at this fold up rubbermaid table with the firing system and selector box. I was standing between them at the table. The show was going fine... Then a rack with chains of 4" Ti salutes blew apart... and the chains kept firing. The salutes were mostly scattering going out away from us and the crowd, but one ended up skipping across the ground and ended up 1-1/2ft or so from one leg of the table when it went off. 4" so took about 4 seconds. Course your mind doesn't really start kicking your body into motion until about 2 seconds have gone by. The farther of the 2 guys in the chairs ended up getting mostly out of his chair. The one in the closer chair ended up just turning away from it a bit, still in the chair. I ended up getting about 2ft away. The closer guy got pieces of his jeans embedded into the skin in his legs, lots of little cuts and bruises from dirt clods, and some specked dots on part of one arm that were burns from some of the titanium. Hard to describe, but probably not as bad as it sounds. I got hit with a dirt clod a few inches from my manhood. Left a bruise. The farther guy at the table was about like me, but a couple more bruises and maybe a cut or 2 on the legs, can't really remember.

The blast jolted the table upward yanking the heavy cord and firing system... The yank deformed the firing system box a bit and it ended up fucking up the really big rotary selector switch and some of the solder points inside... BUT the cable was good and we ended up finishing with a different firing system. So yeah, from now one we don't sit at a table, we kneel ready to take off, and if there is a table we put it on its side as a rudimentary barrier.

Also, at that show the very last thing we fired was a volley of a whole bunch of shells packed with home made "Flaming Shit" stars... Think chrysanthemum/willow, but with course only partially charred charcoal... and burning all the way to the ground... So the shells go up. They all burst. All the flaming shit comes down. Hits the ground. ~10 seconds later the whole field is on fire. It was beautiful.

I'm sorry to hear that, but it's more or less the same over here; in most populated areas we aren't allowed to fire anything bigger than 4", but we got a special permit to launch a load o' 6"ers for that show, it was pretty nice to get some of the larger ones we rarely get to fire, up there into the night sky.

Yeah, me too, the "FWUMP" when the lift charge goes, and the way you can feel the blast in your chest is fucking awesome!
Too bad you rarely get to see the show until afterwards, if you remembered to tape it.:D
BTW, I really like cracklings, especially when you've got 'em packed in several calibers like we did at that show, but it would've been nice to have something to cover the area between the 2.5" and the 4" we fired around the 4.something mark.

We once set off a 4" (minus lift charge) in a 20' container to show some firefighters what would happen if they got caught in the blast while trying to put out a fire in a container with just a single shell - the inside was peppered with scorch marks, there wasn't a single spot where you'd be safe even if you curled up...

Its a wood mallet. Its black because I used to smash up charcoal with it before I realized that the faster way was to just use a meat grinder. With large shells you overfill the hemis, put them together and tap around on them lightly to get the material to settle a bit so you can actually close up the shell.

On a totally different note, while staying on topic; this a clip from when I got certified. We were riggin' up a load of mortars and whatnot, to prove we knew what we were doing and could be trusted with the cert., at some point an aspiring firefighter came up to us (all finals are held at the same place for anyone dealing in "making fire" or "putting it out", as in Pyro Technicians and Firefighters) and told us there'd be something happening soon we might like, so we put down our gear, secured the site, and followed him.

The Firefighters had been working a course in Highly Flammable And Volatile Liquids or something to that effect. For some reason they couldn't get rid of the last bit of Heptane they'd used, or maybe it was a part of their training (as in "something they needed to see in person to understand why it's important to pay attention"), in any case, the result was that they heated a deciliter of Heptane to ignition point, in a closed oil drum.

Yup, I only passed the exam once, not that I needed to pass it several times though, so all I've got is that one clip of a barrel with a bit of heptane, and I posted it on Totse shortly after graduation.

I think I've got a couple of other clips of stuff somewhere, but nothing spectacular though, just 2.5", 3" 4" and 6" during daylight hours as that was what we were asked to rig up and fire during the practical part of the exam, as well as a few demos of different powders.

It's a cartridge based pneumatic cannon. But I see how it could easily be converted to a flamethrower now. :D http://mirror.linnwood.org/flamethrower/

It's a solenoid dump valve over-under design that's bike pump pressurized. The cartridge sticks in right after the first T connector which has a length of dowel epoxied inside it to block air flow in to that section that supports the bolt action. The foreward I'd say foot of barrel has a bolt stuck in the side of it through the other T connector to act as the handle to cock it and shit. It's pretty badass.

I should be ordering a co2 regulator soon to complete my flamethrower.

That leaves one problem to solve: Fuel.

Only fuel I've ever tried is denatured alcohol, can't continue to use it as around here it's >$20 a gallon.

Gas somehow doesn't seem like the best idea, but I'd use it if I had to.

Diesel seems like it would work alright.

Suggestions on what fuel to use or how to thicken it?

That's pretty damn nice, I've had the chance to play around with one of the stationary flamers Rammstein uses during concerts (solid fuel F/A combustion) and that's pretty awesome, shooting huge balls of fire into the night sky, but I would so much more like to have a handheld flamer...

I worked for the company who's license they're using to stay within the boundaries of the law, when they set off pyrotechnics here in DK during concerts. We were doing a promotional video and needed to fire off a load of slow rolling fireballs into the night sky, so the boss called up their Pyro and arranged to borrow two of their rigs; they run on Lycopodium (solid fuel based FAE/CO2 kind of deal, totally safe), and they cost an arm and a leg to fire - I blasted off several kilos of very expensive powder within a few minutes.:D

Yup NC evaporation/slow re-crystallization.

Its just a plastic tube and propeller that happened to fit tighly together that were solvent welded, then stuck on the end of a motor and powered by 2 AA's.

Its a program you download and it can predict hazards of mixing chemicals. Its easy to be confused when using it and it is not always accurate... AND it doesn't give exact reaction pathways... BUT if you are about to mix 2+ chemicals you could check to see if their is an outgassing risk or some shit.
When its running, go new search, type a chemical name, double click the one you want in the list of results, add to list, yes, then new search again and repeat to add more shit... when you are done and on the main page near the bottom is a button, something like predict hazards, press it and it will give you a listing of all the hazards predicted from the individual chemicals and the mixture of chemicals... interesting shit. We use it for our Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) class. To get familiar with it... find the hazards for... say... mixing chlorine powder (calcium hypochlorite) and hydrochloric acid... cool shit. Then try for instance nitromethane and sodium metal. :D

ALSO where you got this program there are a few other programs for looking at cool shit. Like predicting the migration of a toxic vapor plume. BUT we have not used that stuff in our class yet. So yeah. Your mileage may vary.

1123 and 1126 are the main firework pyro ones that I know off the top of my head. Shits expensive, but you might be able to get a copy through local fire department or something. This would have recommended distances and all sorts of info you really gotta know for professional firework displays. Not necessarily porno for pyros... but meh.

Ok, here's the last one I was on...

The camera dude failed miserably to keep the camera straight, so everything was shot tilted 90 degrees - tilt your head to the left...

Another thing is that the guy recording it was way too close, for a 6"'er the minimum safety distance is 150 meters where I live, and that's basically the distance he filmed it at.

A third thing is, that we had quite a bit of trouble with the main fuses, for some reason they decided to die half way through a rack o' tubes, so we had to relight some racks.

Last but not least, I apologize for the messy job -the customer wanted a shitload of fireworks in the air, I think we set off roughly 600 lbs of powder all in all within a 5 minute time span, and that coupled with fuses that fucked up, left us with this. Personally I think it was sub-standard, but we couldn't have done it differently...

We were three guys standing on a "raft", it was constructed out of 12 1X1X1 meter plastic tanks, secured under a deck of 4X4 posts, and boards.
It was floating in an old moat, and we kept our safety distances, I fired with another guy, and one of our colleagues kept the raft in position.

One of the sections we fired, was a 6X6" cluster rigged with quick match, I kind of like the low tone "thumps" of the lower cal's like 2.5's, 3's and 4's (the latter when they come from a short tube), but the exit of a 6'er within an arm's reach is quite extraordinary, and moreso when there's 6 of them going up all at once, we could actually feel the 20 by 6 meters raft tip down when the shells went up.:D

Oh, and the smell of BP smoke, the shower of sparks from the lift charges, and the applause from the spectators is just an added bonus.

Oh, and I just passed my obligatory 5-year exam to keep my license, over here all certified pyros'll have to participate in a follow-up course every five years to catch up on whatever new legislation that might've passed, and finish the course by passing an exam identical to the one they passed to get the license in the first place.
