View Full Version : Halp! Computer not sending signal to screen

A few weeks ago, I'm chillin at my computer when the screen suddenly goes black. I was just on totse or something. So I restart my computer and everything goes back to normal.
Today, I'm chillin on zoklet, when my screen goes black again. I restart my computer and nothing happens. I wait a minute then restart it again. Still black. Fuck. So after a few minutes of this I furiously mash the restart button, and suddenly it works! So the computer boots up, I sign in etc. Then it goes black again. Just as I'm about to rage it comes back on. I do some stuff for like twenty seconds and it goes off again. It does this a few times and then it just goes off and doesn't go back on again. And here we are now.
So my screen is still working (when I turn it on and off the 'acer' symbol pops up, and then it says 'NO SIGNAL' then it goes all black). And my computer seems to be doing something when I turn it on, lights are flashing at me and stuff. But you know the "boop!" sound that happens when you turn a computer on? That isn't happening.
I've opened it up, reattached cords and blew out the dust. OH! Also, I switched it to the other video card, and it still didn't work.
So wtf.

How old is your monitor?

the "boop" sound is ONE tone right? Your MOBO does that if everything is in working order. If you hear nothing it means something's probably up, or if you hear many a beep it means something is up.
Reconnect all your shit, maybe even re-seat your vid card(it's the one where your monitor plugs in).
No beeps is weird, I know nothing of that.
Also, my monitor(my second one atleast aha) started fucking up yesterday. It stay entirely white. I figure I'll wait it out.
If it randomly comes on and off, try hitting the monitor(seriously) if it jumps back on there is probly a loose connection(reset cables). Hopefully not an internal one, that'd be more of a pain.
Also, try hitting the computer.. be gentil/e(?) though, she may be fragile.
Oh! me jake and gabe started a thrash metal/crust punk band today. We will rawk t3h hooze...and we need a band name. Jake wants it to be HxC, I don't care either way. Any ideas?

Try a different monitor. If it still fucks up, somethings wrong with the mobo or a component on it. If it works then just use that monitor.

could be a number of things
faulty PCI-e/AGP socket
the physical monitor cable
anything screen side to process the image
when it goes black shake the screen a bit and see what happens

The monitor is less then a year old, as are all the cords and the computer itself.
And I went through and re-did all the cards and fucked around with the video card, then James did too and still nothing.
Come to think of it, my cat knocked my monitor almost off my desk previous too all this happening. I caught it mid fall, but it might have fucked something up, I'm going to go investigate.
And I wanna hear your band. It should be called "xxombie" or "Mercy is fucking cool". Both are acceptable.
Sweet, two potlucks in a row! I am sooo down for chucks. What food should I bring? See you there alexander!

I dunno what you should bring. Are you still vegetarian? Maybe something of those sorts, courtney is bringing some veg food. I don't know what I'm bringing yet either.
I'll ask jake if we can call it xxombie. It's pretty hardcore, TWO x's.. hell one x is enough.
I figured something may have hit your monitor, seriously try hitting it into shape to get the loose connection(of the internal variety) idea out of the way.

How do even pronounce "xxombie"? I say it like ex-ex-zombie.

I've decided upon vegetarian chili.
And I just beat the shit out of my monitor, but to no avail. I'm beginning to think it's my computer instead of the actual monitor. The monitor is still 'works' in that the logo comes up fine and the no signal message comes up when I turn it on. But when I turn my computer on it doesn't do shit. Just flashes some red lights at me. It isn't making the right start up noises either, like the whirring noises.

I think the logic I used when making my username was that xylophone starts with an x, yet makes a z noise. So obviously two x's would make it even more z sounding. I just pronounce it like 'zombie' I guess, with extra emphasis on the z.

 Topicness, people!
Anyway, narrow down where the fault is as others have said. Try a different screen, and put that screen on another computer.
Percussive maintainence (whacking stuff...) isn't a good idea with a computer. There's not much in a screen you can break by giving it gentle shake to see if there's a loose connection, but don't do it to a computer.

I've done it for years but much apologies on the topic thing.
Did the cat hit the comp at all? Do you have a laptop / other pc to try the monitor on? What about your mom's laptop? yada ya.

No problem. :D I don't mind as much if the OP's problem is already solved, as some old T&T threads were pretty funny.
