here's a thread where we compare ideas about this technology.
basically, here's what i got out of their ad campaign:
1. restaurants have large barrels of used cooking oil back by the dumpsters
2. these barrels of oil can be refined and used as fuel for diesel engines
are we talking about barrels of flammable liquid that restaurants are giving away? sure, that oil requires a higher ignition point than gasoline, but still, for all intents and purposes, if an actual plan was to be hatched using this, you could swing a magnesium ribbon for that shit.:poke:eh?

Actually... some dude "invented" a relatively compact waste oil burner system for restaurants... Complete with filter system and generator so that instead of just giving used cooking oil/grease away to people or disposing of it, they can use it to generate electricity for the store... Think it was in popular science. The plus side is that the store might be less prone to power outages which could really suck if frozen food stuffs thawed out. The minus being of course that less people will get it free for their cars.
The used oil can be filtered and used for less picky diesel engines. This isn't new though. Been going on since probably the 60s at least.

well in terms of the liberal yuppie scum, this is new technology, thus the creation of said ad campaign
but i didn't know about that burner, fuckin genius idea for all the cheapskates who wanna start a "green" restaurant

Heh yeah, Jews and hippies first I would think. Followed by Chinese fast food.

"Ideal For 3-5 Deep Fryers" Heh, yeah I'd say there are a few fast food chains that will get this.
I laughed a little.

the trick with this stuff though (if refining into fuel for your cars) i've learned is DO NOT tell, show, or brag to anyone about it. Certain states are starting to consider it "fuel tax dodging" and will slap handcuffs on you faster then you can figure out why they just did.
Poke around on your dmv's website, i've seen some with a section that allows you to report the license number, motor carrier id number, etc of people you see "violating" the precious governments tax base

All you really need is the oil, ethanol and a strong base or acid.
As always scimad seems to have all the info. http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=1694

yeah, it's some really cool stuff if you can set it up. I know there are a few kits around for it, but they cost about two grand. Really though it's a AWESOME idea if you are looking for a long term fuel storage plan. Just buy some large fuel cans from army surplus, or some of the large blue drums. I know most places are glad to get rid of the oil, and there IS A LOT of places to get it from. If you had the money you could even power your home off of it via a large home generator(s), in fact the oil is better then the hydrocarbon for the internal workings on large motors (not 100% but read it on some science web site). Honestly im shocked people don't think of this stuff.... you could power a good sized building close to anyplace that has a mild fast food industry for free...... if you had the generators and drive to do the work. so...you guys thinking what im thinking

This is no new idea. If anyone cares to read into it a little, Dr. Rudolph Diesel's original engine ran on sesame seed oil.
