View Full Version : What should I avoid saying?

So, I have to go to a psychiatrist in a few days. My doctor obviously thinks there's something wrong with me. I don't. I have no idea what kind of things they'll be asking me.
What sort of things should I avoid saying? I don't really want to have to take drugs, no matter what the legality of them are/would be.

Just consider his/her questions carefully. It's easy to get an idea of what they want to hear and from that you can base your answers. Make it clear that you don't want to be put on medications.

I was thinking that, but what if it just makes me look slow/retarded?

Don't take too long on the questions. When answering don't ever pick extremes: ex I get extremely angry or extremely sad. Always have them balance out. Also NEVER say you think you have magical powers or hear voices. Those are the things that get you a one way ticket to the white walls ward.
Do you know what they head doctor is evaluating you for?

Oh right, so just use common sense.. Nah, as I previously said, I don't really know. All my GP will/can say is that he thinks I should go to the psychiatric unit, and get evaluated there.

Well then you should be fine. Just be calm and courteous and answer the questions as best you can.
There's so many benefits to seeing a shrink and just going along with it. Just think of the meds you can get.

Hey Captain, he said he didn't want meds. Read before you post. :)
Also NEVER say you think you have magical powers or hear voices.
What if you know for a fact that you have magical powers?

Yesterday I spent an hour
A full hour in therapy
My favourite Doctor Landau
My God I hate his breath
He asked me questions
That kind of fool deserves a lie
I gave him answers
The kind of answers Doctors like
Yes, I gave him a bunch of lies
I told him all My nightmares
Were dead and gone
"These days I sleep like a baby
and there never ever was a "THEM"
He asked me questions
That kind of fool deserves a lie
I gave him answers
The kind of answers Doctors like
The Doctor looked at My eyes
Landau: "No trace of insanity
maybe the time is right now
to have a visit from the family
I'm thinking of Your Mother
what does My little patient say?"
I should have taken his stethoscope
and then forced it down his throat
My Mother was at stake
So I behaved
That night I cleaned the entire house
For everything but the memories
No dust, no tea, ah stupid me
I even took the axe away
The sun is up and it's time for bed
I'm so tired
I can't wait no more

Have you considered the fact that you might not be the best judge of whether or not your issues are real? Sometimes it takes a more objective viewpoint to see these things.
Just be honest. It's not a trial by jury. If there's an issue they can help you with, most likely it will be in your best interest to go along with it. If you have an extreme aversion to medication, then tell them that. Most likely they will present you with alternatives.

I'd recommend you say exactly what you think of saying and don't hold anything back. If you aren't nuts, they'll see that you aren't, and if you are, they might be able to help you out. There is always therapy over medication.
It sounds like idiocy, but it is possible to have a problem and not even realize it. The older I get, the more I realize that experiences from my childhood have and still are affecting my life. Not that I am nuts or anything, but there are definitely areas of my life and myself that I wish I could improve, but it is difficult because it's ingrained in my head and has been since childhood. If there's anything like that in your life that you don;'t realize a connection to, it's better to get it over and done with and get help with those things now rather than later. The longer you live with something like that affecting you, the harder it is to reverse.

Generally speaking, if you don't give them detailed plans to kill a bunch of people, you could tell them about how God told you that Bin Laden painted his skin black and took over the US as part of the freemason fucking conspiracy and the toadstools come alive at night and steal your underwear, and they can't do shit.
You should probably get that raging paranoia and anxiety dealt with, however.

...Huh?

Any half-experienced shrink will know you're telling them what they want to hear.
Just tell them the truth. If there's nothing wrong, there's nothing wrong. If there IS, you don't have to accept any of their proposed treatments
Anyway, unless you say you're a risk to yourself or a risk to others, you're not liable to be admitted or anything. Self harm, eating disorders, suicidal or homicidal thoughts... if you have any of those, don't mention them.
Other than that, they'll probably just suggest an SRI/SSRI and further counseling. You can refuse both. I had the SRI/SSRI line thrown at me a few times, I said no, and the shrink said she thought it was a bad idea but it was my choice. I imagine the same applies to you.
Just don't worry, be as honest as possible, and maybe you'll be able to talk through your problems rather than drug 'em away.
