O.K., I play SC4, and I did something I want to know if others have...

What I did was make all city squares the exact same elevation, make them desert, and put bushes, and I reconciled edges, and then used erosion, and kept doing this, untill mountains spanned diffrent cities, completely erasing distinction between cities, and I did this throughout the entire reigon, then, I basically made the reigon the city. I called the city Thunder, and each city was named as "west central thunder", or "southside thunder", or "southeast thunder". Then, I made an avenue wind through the reigon north, to south, and then, I had an east/west one terminate at the N/S one, on the southside of the city.

The city only sat in the middle of the reigon, with the southside kind of connected to the bottom, and the whole thing looked almost exactly like google earth, when you are zoomed right above a small city. the city (reigon) has 470,000 people right now. The avenues never border developed areas without becoming highways, and they become highways when intersecting with any roadway. Interstates! And, I noticed there are usually 15 city blocks in a mile, and I wanted to get houses as close together as possible, so I made all lots 1x1, and even had to click the mouse button like I had parkinson's disease, because once you play long enough, it tries to force you to make long lots.

I then decided a mile was 50 tiles, so I put all the streets in a rectangular grid, with 2 lot rows between, and had a grid of avenues 50x50 throughout the city, occasionally turning to curving, non-grid avenues, in richer, or mountainous areas. I had all low income light residential in this, and about one road, between each avenue. Then, when I got to the edges of the city, I used the howdryiam cheat, and I used the tennis court, and limited the buildings to "euro-contemporary", and jacked up land value in industrial areas, to create red tile roof houses, and high tech industry. All of these streets winded like suburban streets, and there were a few culdisacs. They all still had 2 tiles, and 1x1 tile lot rows between them.

The only thing I am missing is real stores, which I would put on all the avenue corners. I would have to demolish houses to do this, because I couldn't bput them as I built. I am also missing a downtown. I have cellphone pics, but my piece of shit computer can't upload them to image hosting.

What do you think of this, and what do you do with this game?

Post some screenshots.

I used to play it quite a bit but I haven't picked it up in a while, I always tried to make healthy cities but it always failed miserably. The only successful city I ever made was filled with pollution and the water and air was a grim shade of brown.

I think i'll install it again after my exams are over.

That's whats supposed to happen. Last time I checked, New York, L.A., Mexico City, or Beijing didn't have crystal clear air, and perfect school systems.

Really? I don't agree with the above. Usually, my largest cities have perfect education and health. Ithink that one of the key, key things to making cities is to have complex mass-transit. I'll usually parlay subways with bus stations and monorail, never highways. They take up too much room/money. However, it isn't often that my cities turn out like this. On some maps, there's just never much growth, and my towns either stagnate or they become dirty shitholes.

For industry, what I'll do is I'll construct them far away from residential areas. As my city encroaches and I need the land/want to upgrade to high techs, I'll raise the tax rate on the polluting industries to the max, and I'll abolish tax for high tech. I slowly demolish the polluting industry, put parks in, then zone the area for industry. It'll come up as high tech industry, since taxes for others are too high.

Just my tips...

OP that sounds pretty damn awesome, take some screenshots and get 'em hosted.

I've not played SC4 for a while now but I've still kept it on my HDD for the sake of playing it...Might load it up tonight.

Anyone suggest some mods for it?

I took screen pics with a cellphone camera. I'll try to get them hosted.

The only thing I can think of that would make this better is some game mods. I saw some I liked last year, but I don't think they are available.

It was a rural highway mod from simptropolis I was going to replace the highway avenues with that. They also had Circle K, Wal Mart, some fast food places, hooters, and I think albertsons. They also were working on turning lane mods. This would make it beyond perfect, but I don't think they are available.

And congradulations on becoming mod in zoklet.

See, S4 isn't really a win/loose game. My main objective when playing it is to create as much realism as possible. However, there is little smog in my suburban cities.

I'm reinstalling SC4 on my new computer, I still have the old saves, But I had some mods installed for traffic, cause really, SC4 had such aweful path finding. So I'm going to guess until I find that mod my city won't load. But here's to hoping.

-edit-
wow it worked.

When I launched my city I got at least 15 adviser popups screaming "BAD SHIT IS GOIN DOWN!"

I didn't catch how much population I had.

Oh yea I remember now. I kept having the No job icons, cause I was turning into level 3 industry and commerce. But It couldn't keep up with the level 3 Res boom I had. That and their constant bitching at how they had 20 hours commutes, and OH GOD, when I put in a Nuclear Power plant, that dumb hippie bitch would NOT shut up. I wish I could just fire her. She was never helpful. And the all the skyscrapper at the south peninsula where so densely packed and needed healthcare. There was one hospital in particular that had almost no patients and no matter how much funding I gave them, they still complained they never got enough.

My city just got too large for my puny celeron to handle. So I had to quit.

I just got back into this game. My current city is pure res and commercial. The neighboring region is smaller and is pure industrial. Everything is maxed (except environment i think) and i have like 450000 people. I also make $1000o profit a month because of the deals I have set up. I sell water to all neighboring regions and import power. Good money for all regions involved.

Interestingly enough, I had reinstalled SC4RH before I saw this thread. :]

I have a lot of fun playing on islands, or whats a huge challenge is getting a huge city square, building on that, and making several islands each completely independent of themselves. It's awesome.

Yggdrasil
01-24-2009, 04:00 AM
^ Cool

Are your islands on the same map, or are separate in the large general region map? I tend to have a hard time with islands, due mostly to the fact that if on the same map, the people will tend to bitch for transport.

16bit

I love building on islands cause it makes cities look interesting, but It also provides alot of challenge if its got a big mountain. But if you have an island map it makes it very difficult to connect to neighbors.

driveby
01-24-2009, 12:42 PM
Here's the deal with islands...

I am concerned with realism. I want the size, and corresponding population to be realistic. For example, an island should be the reigon, not the city.

16bit
01-24-2009, 12:46 PM
That could work, but it would take so long to build it.

I never even knew about this game's existence. How time absorbing is it in comparison to SimCity 2000? I just googled it an the BAT feature really interests me, but I don't think my interest in the game is going to change the fact it'll be impossible to find a copy of SimCity 4 Motherfucker Deluxe Edition. I don't want none of that torrent shit.

16bit
01-24-2009, 01:06 PM
Tons more.

Oh and make sure to get the 4X industry mod. It makes sense and plus the game is super hard without it. Unless you are going to devote half the map to industry.

-edit- how come no one else has posted any pictures :(?

The only cheats you need is the howdryiam, since water is needlessly complicated, while power is fustratingly simplistic. At least have a substation, and distribution option.

Not complicated, just fustrating, since you need a million pumps for a small area, and the meddler people keep shutting them down.

To answer the question, the graphics will give you an eyegasm. The graphics look like google earth, and the size of the buildings does too. The graphics are incredible. But the game itself is flawed, in many ways, but the origional demo wasn't. It had weather, f5 tornadoes, and many other trimmed features, due to memory requirements.

Theyre all on the same "city map". So in the biggest square you can get, make 4 islands, then make them completely independent. Or what I did yesterday was make really huge mountains separating 4 parts of the city, like a big +, then working the cities one at a time.

Yggdrasil

That is a suburban area, in the southwest part of the city.

The middle of the city has different types of houses, which would be reserved for the brown people. A downtown needs to get built there too, but I haven't done that.

I really wish they would make a real store, realistic shit expansion pack for sc4, including a streets of sim city type game, with unlimited visibility, enterances to buildings from the road, and labels showing up on road streetsigns.

I also wish they would make a thesims game, that can be played in sc4.

The quality has actually went backwards, since SC4. The sims2 makes up for the ground view, by making the game look like a cartoon, instead of like the first sims. But the ground view was good, evening out both games.

They should use the animation shit they use in video games, to make a realistic sims game, where you can become a sim, and live, and drive, and work in a city you built.

And those are cell phone camera pictures.
