View Full Version : Picking up 360 and Ps3 Wednesday.

Suffice to say I used to have a 360 and played the hell out of some Geometry Wars/Oblivion/etc.
For sake of haste, let's just explain two things: my house burned down so 360 is dead and I've been "out of pocket" for about 9 months. So I'm picking up at 360 on Wednesday for certain. That much is absolute. I was going to buy a used one from this black guy at Superlube, but I'm pretty sure it's stolen. I don't even care so much about that, but I think it RRODed and he had it repaired "on the street". So I'm not going to accept it, though the price was excellent (like 180 for premium+games/2controllers).
So I'm definitely picking up a 360. I still have all my old games, but I need to know if there have been any killer apps in the past year or so I should be aware of. Of course, I'll be getting Fallout 3. That's a given.
As far as Ps3, I might be picking one up the same day. I've never owned one, so that's a new experience but I have a 50" at home and I'd like to make the best of it. However, I realize upon reflection that I am not really aware of Ps3 software. I know if I did get one I'd buy it with Metal Gear Solid 4, but what else is really killer app level of awesome? I prefer RPG, but nothing like Star Ocean (quasirealtimecrapbattle), I like traditional JRPG (FF/DQ/Chrono/etc). I like just about any genre but sports primarily, but I'm sure there is some killer software. But again, depending on responses here and my personal thoughts and investigation, might hold off on Ps3. Dunno.
Also, on the idea of Street Fighter IV, which system is it better for? I imagine about the same, but which functions better for online play/offline/etc? Any perks for either system that anyone knows of? Is the online on Ps3 as good as Live as far as players/connectivity/etc?
Does the dpad for 360 suck too much for SFIV?
All input is appreciated.

I don't own a PS3 so I don't know about any new software except for Home. The 360 has NXE (Next Xbox Experience) and Netflix (Which isn't bad at all on the 360). As for SFIV I've played on the 360 it wasn't what I excepted, Maybe the gameplay would've been different for me on the PS3, I'd rent it if I were you though.

I've played SF IV, I like it, probably won't replace Third Strike for me, but what about SF II HD remix? That's only 360 or PSN too?

I believe thats on both XBLA and PSN, I can't be too sure. I haven't tried it out but I'm pretty sure you can download a trial version off XBLA. I'll try that out when I get home and let you know how it is.

I want it to be ultra sweet, but who knows.
I'm a Third Strike kind of guy, but always open to new SF experiences.

The general consensus is that the 360 version has smoother online play. Either way, whatever version you get your going to want to buy a stick. I am a third strike guy myself and I could not stand SF4.
If you want a RPG console, then the 360 is the best choice for you, in both japanese and western fronts.
As for good PS3 games, there are plenty.

I AM getting a 360 regardless, it's the Ps3 in addition to which is questionable..

Your kidding right? The PS3 has some great games coming out, Not that the 360 isn't but the PS3 is definitely worth it now, With great games like R2, LBP, Killzone 2, Motorstorm, inFamous and a whole other bunch of games that are releasing this year.

Get a PS3, drop the 360.
I got a 360 for GTA and it was the first time I was disappointed with/regretted buying a console in my life.

No, I was trying to cook cheese sticks at 4 in the morning and got a little distracted.
Anyway, well, this thread hasn't been much help I'm afraid. Still going to buy a 360 because I know it rocks out (Geometry/Oblivion/GTA/etc). Just trying to convince myself of the validity of purchasing a Ps3, and telling me that "360 sucks get Ps3" isn't working.
I want: MGS4, SF IV, maybe a couple other things, but eh...

Go for it, However I would get the 360 first then wait 1-2 months then get a PS3, there might be a possible price drop or a good bundle in the summer or after E3.

Nah, it was this asshole's place I was renting. Not that this justifies it or was the reason behind the scenario, but he had a constant habit of surveying us. Trying to peek through the windows (maybe to see my girlfriend at the time), taking pictures of our house because I had a "Newport" sign outfront (indicating some sort of malicious behaviour). Claiming we couldn't have visitors, etc. He was insane. He say we shouldn't talk outside the house after 10, but then get on his Harley drunk at midnight and drive up and down the driveway (he lived next door), then yell at his crackhead girlfriend and send her down the road to sleep in his camper (also next door). He was some sort of weird landlord with a commune type environment, so it seemed. One night I thought someone was stabbing and robbing him due to the wailing he was doing next door in the middle of the night. Turned out he was just drunk and crying because he had no friends.
Weird story, I guess.. But in the end, ashes and dust.

Yeah, I know. Sound pretty hyped, huh? I've decided I'm going to wait on the Ps3, just for no reason. Picked up a fightpad for 360 (to play SF IV - solves my dpad issue), and I'll just get Fallout and fuck MGS for a few more months.
I guess.
Now I'm looking at what extra 360 software to pick up (I have a lot of games ,but seeing what's new).
So far thinking Sacred (maybe, just for co-op drinking), SF IV for sure, and maybe Fable II if it isn't complete crap, as well as Assassin's Creed if it's really cheap.
Any other suggestions?

D-Pad is impossible to use for SF4, you're going to have to get a SFIV pad, a joypad or just learn to use analogue. Quarter circles are harder to pull off and ultras are tricky, it's hard to pull off aerial hurricane kicks and hadokening without jumping backwards first. Learn to Blanka it up.

I've played for hours and hours, but I can't help but feel disappointed. I knew it was going to be Oblivion: With Guns, but it really seems like that's it.
I mean, nuclear fallout aside, it feels like a dead world. Not enough things going on, too few town/cities/etc. Areas look very much the same all over, you have to repetitively enter underground areas (which all look the same) to make your way to other areas because of conveniently placed piles of shit in the rubble...

So far I'm really enjoying it. The combat system is really fun, the completely open environment is cool, and the story and quests are interesting. It's got the same feel as the original fallout games. I'm not that far in yet so there's still going to be a lot more to explore, I will see if it remains fun until the end or if it gets boring.

I'll sell you my PS3 if you want, 60gig 2 controllers no games (is that any surprise? I just borrowed them off mates or took advantage of the EB games 7-14 day trial :D ). It may be able to play Blu-ray, and only idiots declare things suck, but it is for all intents and purposes inferior. SFIV would definitely be better on PS3 controllers if you don't have a stick though. The 360 d-pad is a quick fix, but the PS3 button layout is much better for that kinda thiing IMHO. They both have their pro's and cons, and overall I do think the 360 controller is where the 360 shines the most, second to games, and price.

Hey Kureishima how are you liking Fallout 3 now that you've had some more time with it? I'm loving it, I agree navigating through washington D.C's metro is annoying as hell and around that area it can seem like a dead world. But I thought once you get to Rivet city it gets pretty sweet, and when you go to check out the citadel and visit that town full of kids (can't remember the name), it definitely feels lively. Especially when you get a partner and house, etc, it feels like there's always something new and interesting that pops up just as I'm getting a bit bored with killing supermutants.

I have decided further that it is not of my interest to play this game. I went to Rivet City, Vault 112, etc. Plot does not interest me, gameplay does not interest me very much, etc. I ended up putting Oblivion in the disc tray and getting immediately sucked in. Fallout just feels dead to me. :-/
Many of the quests (particularly on the side) feel unrewarding or uninteresting. I just can't "feel" it.
On a side note, I'm glad I -didn't- pay 20 dollars to try Assassin's Creed. Borrowed it from someone and it's ultra suck. Once you get to Damascus things are somewhat more fun to play, but initially the setting is bland, thrown into the middle of a story I don't care much about as a player, etc.

Well, it wouldn't even be about Oblivion. It's just not suited for that Elder Scrolls-style engine, in my opinion. Some kind of new ground-up engine would be good, but not just Elder Scrolls redux.
