I never thought I'd see a sequel to my favorite PS2 game, Amplitude, but it's finally here and it's awesome.
Seriously, if you have a PSP, go find it asap. You know where to look.

This is less a Rock Band spinoff and more an Amplitude sequel.

You nailed it there. These games suck as you never play a real instrument. You play with plastic guitars with big coloured buttons on them. Sounds like a toy for the ages of 3-12.

What's the fun of lightgun arcade games if you're not actually shooting a real gun?
Guitar Hero and the like are entertaining games if you don't take them too seriously. Good fun to have lying around at a party. Nobody actually thinks they're good at guitar 'cos they're good at Guitar Hero. Have you ever played it?

Except Rock Band Unplugged involves no plastic instruments.

Some people do take it way too seriously. And the whole microphone and drums thing just adds to the fun at a party.

The only fun thing about rock band/guitar hero (i still don't see the difference between the two) is the drums.

I would say that the drums are definitely the best part, but I have fun with guitar and vocals too.
However, I'm really trying to figure out how this discussion as any relevance in this thread considering Rock Band unplugged has no plastic instruments and is really a totally different type of game.
It's more a sequel to this:

than a traditional Rock Band game.
Frequency/Amplitude are Full of Win. i may go pick up a PSP just so i can play this game. Tracklist?

If you liked Amplitude or Frequency you'll definitely dig this.
Also, they're releasing a bundle that comes with a PSP, the game, and a, I believe 4GB memory stick so you might want to look into that. Or just buy a PSP, get a hacked firmware and acquire it through other means.

You misunderstand. What fun is pattern recognition if you can't feign the ability to actually do something interesting, such as play an instrument or dance.

What fun is pattern recognition
You're oversimplifying.
It's not merely pattern recognition when you're doing it to the beat of a song.
What's the fun of DJ Max, or Gitaroo-Man, or Amplitude, or any music game that doesn't require expensive instruments? Apparently you don't like it, but fuck if you seem to like any fun games.

The fun is doing it in an interesting way, not just pressing the corresponding buttons on a PSP

Incorrect.
It wasn't fun as a mini game, I don't think it'd be too enjoyable as a full featured one.

Well, fun's subjective. Obviously a lot of people enjoy it; personally I think it's hard not to pick up a Guitar Hero guitar and have a laugh with some mates. Diff'rent strokes.

it was actually a Daxter minigame, but I have run across many a pattern recognition videogame which didn't hold interest.

I'm not a huge fan of the interface; they should have done something a little different.
That said, I don't have a PSP so I won't be getting this anyhow. The Guitar Hero games on DS were okay but not awesome. Supposedly they're working on new ones for the DSi, so I'm excited to see what they do.

Uh, what's wrong with it? It works perfectly.
I definitely would have performed Amplitude style background visuals though.

I just would have preferred a more innovative interface; I think Bit.Trip Beat spoiled me :(
Are you ready for Bit.Trip Core?

Innovative how though? I think the clean design of the interface is top notch. In a game like this everything needs to be simple and clear. Which is why the Rock Band interface has always been one hundred times better than the awful Guitar Hero interfaces.
Are you ready for Bit.Trip Core?
I don't know, it doesn't really look as fun as Bit.Trip Beat to me. It's too bad WiiWare doesn't have demos so I could be sure, but so far I doubt I'm going to get it.

Those music games are good fun to pick up and play, but there's a lot of THAT GUYs out there. That guy takes it way too seriously, practices a fucking video game, and whoops everyones ass. But it's always a fun thing to pick up. I think everyone understands that you're in make believe land, like all other video games. Also, some that guys spend so much time practicing these games that they could learn actual instruments. But most people who play the games are just doing it for shits and fun.
I find that drinking makes Guitar Hero and Rock Band both more challenging and more fun.
And maybe we should just have an official Guitar Hero/Rock Band flamefest stickied. Yes, I am aware that I somewhat contributed to this one.
