I have heard several conflicting opinions on the merits of his poetry.
But, I don't understand how he could be a bad poet, when writing is essentially writing poetry but harder.
Take for example the lines from Ghost Song.
Indians scattered,
On dawn's highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child’s,
Fragile eggshell mind
We have assembled inside,
This ancient and insane theatre
To propagate our lust for life,
And flee the swarming wisdom of the streets.
Ill probably pick up his book of poems one day, Has anyone read any of his work? (some people say that "like all great songwriters who write poetry drunk, the finished work is never as good as they think it is"

I have read both Wilderness and The American Night, I'd say check them out, I really enjoyed them. If you don't feel like reading, or would like to hear it as he imagined it, listen to An American Prayer, most of the stuff from Wilderness is on that album.
Also, I had to laugh because I posted an almost identical thread on Totse like 3 years ago.

The End is a fucking poem and a half.
I'd say it's possible that he was killed by the CIA, but I'm not gonna get into it.

i checked out his poetry many moons ago and personally found it lacking. songwriting is a little easier than poetry (or maybe easier to conceal) because its only one of a whole merging of elements. with the poetry, all you have is the words, and most of his stuff falls short. in my opinion, anyway.

Think all he ever wanted was to be a poet, near the end he hated that he was a musician. Poetry can not be valued as good or bad, it is opinion. it just is.
He wrote what he wanted and thats good enough, however personally I dont care for his poetry , But I dont think it should be judged higher or lower just because he was a famous musician.

that would be giving him wy too much credit.
he wasnt important enough to be killed by anyone except for himself.

I thought his poetry was better then his music, though he did recycle a few stanzas in both which pissed me off for some reason. I thought an american prayer was awesome, It was his poetry, but he was reading it to you so you always got the right tone and stuff (pretty technical word there, stuff (for some reason I awalys carry on the 'f' when I say stuff, so it comes out like stufffffff))
