I think it probably has more to do with our propensity for violence as a species. That's not to say it's natural for us to be violent, certainly, I think there might be a certain "guiding hand" behind the violence in our species, but I'm sure that if video games were around in Roman times, they would have loved to have seen what we see now. In fact, they were exposed to things that we only see on viral videos. And they relished in it, they ate it up, like we do now with violent tv, movies and video games.
