View Full Version : Young Guys Suck At Choosing/Wearing Button-Up Shirts
2 Annoying Things I Often See Involving Button-Up Shirts:
1) Having a t-shirt showing at the neck. It looks really shitty...like, frat-boy-ish, or just someone with a general lack of style. A nice t-shirt (ie. a designer t-shirt, not just Hanes) could work with an outfit if done properly, but the people I'm talking about look like shit.
As far as I'm concerned, the proper way to wear a button-up shirt casually is to have the top of the chest bare (ie. no shirt underneath or a wife-beater). Obviously, this can be over-done, but if you just leave the top couple of buttons open, it'll be fine. (about 2 inches below the sternum is usually good) Having more buttons undone is only acceptable if you live in a hot climate, IMO.
2) Those striped pieces of shit.
Not really much to say about this, other than it looks juvenile and/or tacky. Stick with solid colors.
In truth, I don't really want more young people to start dressing well, but I do enjoy making fun of them.

This is a fashion forum, you closet homosexual. You aren't contributing to this thread, and unfortunately for you, Jonathan Doerty doesn't put up with thread derailing trolls. How about you delete your off-topic posts, I delete mine, and you save me the trouble of PMing the mod? If you want to continue with the "ur gay" stuff, by all means, take advantage of the PM box.

Stripes broaden the chest and narrow the waist. Although a lot of striped shirts look terrible a well fitting one looks good. Solid colours in shirts are better for suits, but when I'm just wearing a shirt I'd prefer it to have something else to it.
Oh, but I agree 100% with wearing a high necked shirt underneath, it looks fucking retarded.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Its mostly because "how to dress like a man" as in, solid colors, belt, shirt tucked in, nice belt, nice shoes has largely been usurped by MTV and retarded europeans.

Do you have an example of a striped shirt that you would like? I think I actually agree...the fit of a shirt is generally much more important than the actual style/color.
I was envisioning these sloppy-looking motherfuckers with some generic shirt thrown on.

What designs do you like on your button-down shirts? Not that I wear them too particularly often, but I do like them in checkered patterns, almost resembling a tartan. Those go well with my pants and shoes, and a scarf (which can only be worn 2 months out of the year considering the sweltering tropical heat).I have 2 nice button-downs that aren't checkered. Both have a real nice pattern as well. My favourite of the two is a deep-burgundy-coloured one with rather thin black lines running from top to bottom. The burgundy's deep enough that they're only seen close-up.

Well fitting is key. God forbid you have broad shoulder and a waist that doesn't match.
And tucking in, well, they tend to come loose and sort of "bag out" after a while. Prefer to just leave it untucked, unless I'm wearing a jacket with the shirt.
And I always wear wife beaters with them. Too hot to wear another shirt underneath, plus that seems to defeat the purpose of wearing a buttonup to begin with.

And...I'm really only telling you what I would do; you shouldn't necessarily change your wardrobe or seek my approval if it's working for you. :p

Anyhow, I do think light stripes on a dark colour/vice versa looks bad, but int he case of my burgundy shirt, it's very thin stripes and they're both deep, solid colours.

I just wanted to mention that the sternum starts where your collar bones come togehter, and ends down where your ribs split. It's not a very good identifier of where you should wear your last buttoned button, as it's about 6 or 8 inches long :)
I am not sure whether I agree or not with what you're advice is to wear the shirts better, but I do know that a lot of people just look like giant douches with the way they wear button ups. For god sakes, bend the collar down, assholes. Don't wear it up... Don't just crumple it around. Fold it down. XD

I have some casual shirts that I'll usually wear a plain black/white t-shirt/wifebeater under, and others that I'll never wear anything (visible) under. It depends on the shirt and the occasion. As long as they fit well and are coordinated with the rest of your outfit they'll usually look good.
EDIT: I consider the fit of a shirt to be the most important thing. An ugly pattern on a shirt that fits well could conceivably be pulled off by some people (unless we're talking those horrific early-90s shirts), but a great shirt won't look good on anybody if it fits like shit.
