So, basically I'm a California kid going to college in Saint Louis. Needless to say, I have no fucking clue how to handle this whole winter with snow concept. The heaviest clothing I own is basically a water and wind proof hoody and a leather jacket. All of my shoes are PF Flyers, most of which are plim soles, some of them are sturdier, but I wouldn't want to wear any of them in the snow. I do have a pair of nice leather hiking boots though, but I'd like to keep them for backpacking. Then, the rest of my cold weather attire is basically flannel and a hoody.

So, basically I need stuff to wear while not looking like an idiot (and not breaking the bank). I'm guessing that I'll need a jacket of some sort. Would jeans be ok? And I'm going to need boots I guess. Maybe these: http://www.amazon.com/Magnum-Mens-Stealth-II-Boot/dp/B000V2FS86 ?

I basically have no idea what the hell I need or a lot of my options. Help me not be miserable.

Winter's not that scary; I get through it every year with jeans, a few pairs of trainers and layered upper-body clothing. T-shirt, hoodie and lightish jacket works perfectly for day-to-day stuff. It's worth getting gloves and a hat that suits you (I like beanie hats) for cold days, a thicker waterproof hooded jacket (? (http://images.ems.com/media/images/products/210/21022/2102273/210227356/210227356_grizzley_400.jpg)) and maybe a scarf if you'd be happy wearing one. It's not like you're gonna be in Canada.

Just get a nice coat that doesn't make you look like a marshmallow. I got mine while in Italy. It's just a nice black coat with some brown fur (which is not visible when I wear it) at the back of the neck to keep my neck warm. I'd show you a picture of it but it was from a small shop in Sorrento that makes everything custom.
Anyway, pea coats are usually appropriate for any occasion. You could even get away with wearing your leather jacket as long as you have layers on under that.
For shoes, you don't need boots. You're not hiking through the tundra. It's just a college campus. Get some basic tennis shoes and if your feet get cold, put two pairs of socks on.

Save the money for when you get there and it's cold. You don't buy winter clothing ahead of time. It's for when things start to get cold. The stores will have sales and stock plenty of options.

Go for comfort and warmth.

The winter styles vary based on where you live. For example, Mr.Happy's choices would be viewed poorly here; it's the sort of thing a homeless guy would wear in the Fall.

Just wait and see; a non-military pea coat is still a fairly usual thing to see.

Well what kinda look do you want to go for?
A classical look, trendy look, etc?

They are rather hobo-chic.

Fuck winter.

Just get something that's warm.

just layer yourself, get a tshirt, then a thermal (these are fairly cheap, just look around)
maybe wear some thin underarmour, i know it's suppose to be thin and breath, but it will cling to your skin. this should protect from most weathers, while being quite versatile. im sure any jacket over those layers, even a thick hoodie should keep you warm enough. and get some accessories, like someone else mentioned, gloves, beenie, n scarf. thick socks may also be good, seeing as the feet are the first to go numb.

chances are if there is a snow storm, or subzero temps, you shouldnt be outside...

If you don't mind looking like a douche.

Not everyone looks like a douche in one (although a lot do.) Better than most of the crap you see people wearing.
