So after wanting to see it for years now, I finally got to watch it today after buying a 2 DVD set of this and Pi. Requiem for a dream...man, what a film. quite honestly, I was left deeply disturbed. was this film intended to make you feel uncomfortable? I mean, I've seen alot of films and this one had an effect on me like no other. truly gets to you.
I really loved the style and omfg, the score. I've heard that reoccuring string motif a thousand times before (sampled in rap, flash games, etc.); so this is what it's from? nice.
and now on to Pi.

I saw Pi, and it was pretty freaky... Left me feeling extremely... I don't know how it left me. I just felt strange. I have Requiem for a Dream, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Maybe I will later tonight.
I love that film.

haha, yeah. "ass to ass".
so I watched Pi shortly after my first post. great shit. I really can't decide which one I liked more, between the two.
I hadn't realized that Arafonosky had done The Wrestler (which I've been wanting to see), but I did know that he's currently working on the next Robocop (FUCK YES!). I didn't know what to think when I heard it was being remade, I figured Sony would throw it over to some music video director or something. but man, watch out Verhoeven. that's saying alot.

I fucking LOATHE that film. It is nothing but pure, blunt, PSA type propaganda that doesn't even bother to be accurate. The mere fact that the pupil's dilate instead of constrict shows they were much more concerned about effect over realism.
Even the most depraved junkies probably saw that film as an exaggeration. It's like every bad thing that could possibly happen happens over a very short period of time. I mean sure, junkies rip people off and get into trouble with the law, but how many get their arms sawn off in a medical amputation done like it was during the civil war. I think even in a crummy hospital they can control the blood from spurting all over the room.
Not that I am a junky, but I think that the more realistic films would be Trainspotting, Drugstore Cowboy or Trash (A Paul Morrisey/ Andy Warhol film which is one of the best "drug" movies that I have seen)
I can see how it is superficially a decent technical film in terms of mood and visuals, but it is so stupid in premise that they may as well have just had them murdering children for change then cutting their veins open with a razor blade to dose. At least that would be entertaining.
Somewhat ranting, but I really do hate the film.
Requiem for a Dream isn't supposed to be a factual representation of drug use, it's a stylistic interpretation. The quick cuts, long shots and split screens are a visual attempt to convey the meaning of the book.
Yes, it's so far up its own arse it can see the sun through its mouth, but that's what makes it great. It's pretentious self-indulgence.
The song that is heard so often is Zoo York by Paul Oakenfold, same guy that did Starry Eyed Suprise.
On a separate note - ass to ass is quite possibly the hottest sex scene ever filmed.

Yeah, I didn't like it as much as the people that recommended it to me. I hated how they overused that one orchestral track throughout the movie.
Still have to check out Pi, though.

i 100% agree with you. everybody highly recommended it when we were like 16, and i watched it then, and i was bored out of my mind. i watched it again, and i was still bored. it isn't all that shocking, i just think it sucks, and certainly doesn't live up to all of it's hype.

I agree with everyone who says that the movie sucks it was far too worst-case-scenario oriented. I just started into the book and it seems a lot more realistic so far... Just food for thought. That movie was so bad, I thought they were doing meth and not heroin.

Punks getting what they deserve. The only person I felt sorry for was the black man.
I downloaded thinking there would be sexual degrading scenes. With more than a flash of tit and some old man lubing up a giant dildo. Fantastic waste of time.
A good alternative to the genre of movies with extremely downer plots would be "He Was A Quiet Man," That one left me feeling funny for days.

That one had some cool camerawork too.

requiem, was a good film, so long as you realise its propaganda more than fact.
Either way, that film left me feeling hollow for quite a while afterwards.

Agreed. It was a terrible movie. I've heard the book wasn't a long anti-drug propaganda stunt and the author never intended it to be.
And Cameron should have gotten RoboCop, I don't trust this guy as far as I can throw him.

I'd imagine Robocop is a rediculous joke to Cameron. you have to think, it was probably the primary contemporary rival to Terminator; which he wayyy overperformed (and even if not for T2 -- Titanic, anyone?).
besides, Cameron is very busy with his upcoming Avatar (not to be confused with the cartoon series, or whatever) -- of which will fucking rule, and I'm willing to bet a small amount of cash on that. and after that he's onto Battle Angel, which perfectly suits his vision.
and then I'd really hope he's willing to start on True Lies 2 after that.
but I feel Aronofsky will do just fine on Robocop. I can't wait.

Both are over-rated. Not saying they're bad, just not as "amazing" as people say.

trainspotting is a much more accurate depiction of the situation.
if anyone's ever seen the movie spun, in the scene where the cook rents the porno, the porno says "rectum for a dream" on it, which is a direct reference.

Ok, so I just watched the film. I liked it. And I also found it to be quite artistic. Amazingly so.
