Who else eats them? Not many people know about them but they're fucking amazing.

You mean the ones in the packet or the proper ones like you'd get on the streets in Malaysia? Because the packet variety are VERY popular around here, especially with uni students, but I haven't seen anyone cook them from scratch yet.

I keep planning to try a similar dish but I'm not sure how I'll go about it yet because I can't find a recipe that I like. I'm thinking it'll involve boiling some sort of noodle with powdered vegetable stock and spices then frying them in a wok with some tofu, capsicum and bok choy. Possibly use dark soy sauce with ginger and honey to marinate the tofu. I dunno, I need to start dating a Malay girl so she can do it.

I have this all the time. Of course, it's a bit easier for me since I live in Singapore, and everybody and their Mom makes it for dinner.

I lived off that crap for a year in highschool. The smell is nauseating.

Oh go on, they're not that bad..

But they are! And most people don't even realise it. The smell of the shallots and the flavoring packet permeates your clothes and hair. Blegh.

You should have tried ramen instead.

I hadn't really noticed that, but now you mention it, I do notice every time I cook them, the kitchen smells of the seasoning, et al, for bloody ages...

I've had proper mi Goreng in Malaysia and Indonesia, never found the packet version over here though.

These are Indonesian :). Get a hold of some, even though this instant variety isn't as healthy, they're dirt cheap.

i think i have a pack of them...with vegetables mixed in. i fail to see how they're really any different than ramen noodles, in the grand scheme of things.

i got to start getting creative with my ramen noodles before i get sick of them. i got a case (36) of the chicken flavor to last me the semester. so far i've added taco sauce to them, which was fine. I'd like to try a tomato or alfredo sauce.

edit: soy sauce might work too i guess.

Sir, I believe you are mistaken.

Also, for something a little more pricey but absolute win to eat on special occasions, buy a jar of pickled & marinated artichoke hearts in oil, then just boil some water on a hotplate (in a pot, or it will just turn to steam) and throw in about a tablespoon of salt per 3-4 litres of water, and bring to a violent boil. Throw in some fettucine, spaghetti, or anything long and thin made from wheat and cook it till it's all soft but still quite firm in the centre when you bite into it (al dente). Throw it into a colander to drain while simultaneously pouring in the jar of artichokes in oil. Drain well then serve. It's as good as gold and easy as fuck.

Mi Goreng isn't your typical Ramen, dammit. You drain that shit so there's no soup for starters. Also, I saw some instant noodles very similar packaging to that just a couple hours ago in an asian store when I went in to pick up some Yeo's bamboo drink (almost as good as that Thai coconut drink you can buy in supemarket asian isles now). I'm willing to give it a try. And I'm no asia obsessed fag, I just like their food.

the way i make ramen, it's just noodles. not soup. soup blows.

i microwave them in about one cup of water, maybe a little more, for 3 minutes. take out and stir and microwave for another minute. add flavor pack, stir, let sit. no soupy shit.

cheap and good. but they leave me burping the smell for hours, so i'd suggest this as a dinner or before bed meal.

Mi Goreng noodles are the best, with all the chilli sauce, soy sauce, oil stuff, and seasoning all mixed together :)

3 packets and 2 eggs fills you to the point of bursting, but it keeps you going for ages.

1 pack and 1 egg is the best quick snack though

$13 for 30pk box now :((used to be $9.50)

at university, i sometimes hang out with some chemical engineering students, who just so happen to have their own room. the centrepiece of the room is a safe that is filled with packets mi goreng

though i dont like any kind of packet noodles, though i have made the dish once, and it was pretty good

i'm eating a bowl as we speak, how many packs do you guys usually chuck in? i do 2, 3 is just too much for me and 1 is just a tease.

Kwinnie Bogan

I usually only eat 1 pack, because while it's not quite enough 2 packs is too much. You used to be able to buy the "JUMBO" packets in this situation, which were like 1.5 regular packets. Anyone remember those?

DarkMage, I've got a couple packs of Shin Ramyun and an instant cupbowl or two, and they're really good but just come short of Mi Goreng awesomeness. maybe it's because they're proper Ramen/a soup type that I don't like them as much.

Soy sauce is amazing with ramen. Especially if you can throw some frozen vegetables in as well.

While we're on the topic... Does anyone know how regular spaghetti goes with soy sauce? I really like the ramen stir fry, but I don't know how it will go with regular spaghetti.

The funny thing is that Mee/Mi Goreng means fried noodles in Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia, so you're all talking about fried noodles noodles.

They're delicious, i could live off them. I cook traditional mee goreng sometimes when i need a noodle fix and its never quite as good as the one from the packet.
