Okay, I now know the following things about the fate of the show that are relatively new developments:
1) the show has been stretched from 5 to 6 seasons total. However, the number of episodes will be THE SAME, as a result of seasons 4-6 having only 16 episodes, rather than 24.
2) the Writer's Guild Strike has affected the show - only half of season 4 has been filmed, but it will still premiere in January. Hopefully, the strike will not affect the intended plot/development.
On the whole, I think things are okay - as I understand it, the show's ultimate ending and developments are already figured out, and now they're just following their plotted course. However, with writers on strike, it is impossible to know how much actual scripting has been done, and whether the strike will result in anything stupid and half-assed, like the pre-emptive season finale for Heroes that pissed me off so much.
