So recently I was reading this book Outliers and he claims that to succeed in any field, it is simply a matter of practicing a specific task for a total of 10,000 hours.

I actually found this very interesting as I always thought virtuosity (especially) in music, came simply inherently. However, if you think about it, if you practise something for 10,000 hours there is no way you cannot become a "success". It reminds me of the guy with no arms who plays the guitar beautifully and is now a professional guitarist.

I do think however that inherent aptitude is also an x factor, but the point is, everything takes massive amounts of effort.

Agree/Disagree? Any other thoughts/examples?

Malcolm Gladwell is great. I was watching the talk he gave at TED and although it was simple, I took a lot from it.

Anyway, for your example, virtosity is reasonably inherent imo, especially with things like music or mathematics but hard work can bring you such a long way that it is pretty much irrelevant. It's not like you can change it anyway.

Some people are much, much more efficient learners than others. If it's a mental thing, then holistic learning rather than rote memorization is a much better way to become good at thigns fast. Physical things require x amount of repition of correct forum to become good at something.

This is why most Zokletians are expert wankers.

So if you dedicate 417 days of your life to any field you will have mastery over it. I'd say that is a pretty good rule. My question is would hard work(10 000 hours) be able to compete/beat genius(some one who is born with the ability)? Pretty good idea though

10,000hrs/417 days = 23.98 hrs per day.

Better stock up on those caffeine pills.

Are you trolling? 1 minute sleep a day is more than plenty.

Yeah, you just need to learn the Minute Method.

Unfortunately, it takes 10,000 hours of intense study to master it.
