It's required summer reading for college. Something I figured I'd be done with after graduating high school. I figured this was the right board to ask.
I have no idea what book you're referring to from the name alone. Do you have a link, or more information?

Okay, it's actually called "The Complete Persepolis" and it seems boring as fuck.

Every store has been selling it for like $34.99 around here. I'm not paying that much to read something I'm probably going to dislike.

Perhaps watch the movie (http://www.amazon.com/Persepolis-Chiara-Mastroianni/dp/B000YAA68W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1246927419&sr=8-1) instead.

You know that Persepolis is a graphic novel, right? He won't be skimping out on 200 pages of top to bottom prose. The question is how specifically he'll be expected to regurgitate the graphic novel come next semester. His decision of course.

Watching a movie may fly in high school, but I wouldn't attempt it in college. I guess what it comes down to is how required the reading is.
That's what it always comes down to, how much is he really expected to regugitate back (something that changes with every class, teacher, or assignment). People half ass it all the time in college, reading cliffnotes, or modern vernacular versions of whatever. I just don't see a teacher assigning a graphic novel over a break that lasts two to three months expecting the class to come back and recite passages verbatim. If anything I imagine the teacher intended, more than the prose, that the students get an understanding of Iranian culture and life under the Ayotollah, something that the movie could provide. I doubt she's going to quiz the class on the specifics of Satrapi's life. Though I don't know what course this is for, so it's possible.

I'm ashamed to admit I watched The Name of the Rose instead of reading it for an "Intertextuality, Bible and Mythology" course in 2nd BA year and passed the exam.
It's better than reading summaries...
