It occurred to me that the probability of something horrible happening in the near future is very likely. If you have been paying attention to the news, you will know what I am talking about when I say things aren't looking too hot.
I have been hearing that there could be a total shut down of the internet and communications, an economic collapse, World War 3, flu pandemic, etc etc.
Now, I am not going to tell you to stock up on supplies or anything like that but rather to post here in this thread useful information that we could use for the sake of our survival.
Anything from how to start a fire to how to make a home made solar panel. It is information and ideas that will help us survive if such ordeal were to happen.
E-Books, Text Files, Guides, tools, equipment, maps, encyclopedias, any information you can find that will help us survive the chaos.

Finally, a man who is thinking like me. Great idea. I have been wondering wha text/ebooks to start mass torrenting just for such an occasion...and maybe printing them all out and putting them in binders, being as electricity probably will be little to none when this all happens.

A shitload of BIs for rebel stuff/survival, porn, explosive synths, maps, DIY things. Stuff like that, the BIs and things are so that if something happens we can survive. Also cooking things and health books. Survival books also.

My plan if anything BIG happens is simple: take my motorbike (with pack rack and saddle bags), fill it with survival gear and go to my friend's house who has two four wheel drives, take them to my mates steel fabricating shop and fix them with up with a quick roll cage + bars over the windows, then go about 2 hours out of the city to a nice stream where there are fish. Stay calm the whole time.
What I'll want to do is get a heap of seeds, fishing tools, different types of rope/cord/wire and string. A first aid kid, half a dozen bottles of drinking water, some light weight metal utensiles, a multitool, a hunting knife, a fold out saw, a small hand axe, a fold out shovel and possibly a small sword (good for cutting brush/self defense), and a SHIT LOAD of other handy stuff that unless some one wants me to, I wont bother listing.
Just stock up as much as possible. Trade any electronics/useless but 'valuable' shit for necessities. There will always be idiots who will want an iphone over a strong knife with a sharpening stone.
This is all on the assumption that civilization collapses.

Martial law is coming people, and if you manage to not be captured and placed in a camp, you will probably end up living in the woods or something of that sort. http://www.wildwoodsurvival.com/survival/fire/cokeandchocolatebar/ with some basic things, you can start a fire.
http://sianews.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2861 - A little guide on how to survive martial law.
Any vehicles you try to drive during martial law can and will be possessed by the military, and on the newer cars with onstar they can remotely shut off your car, so that's out of the question. It seems you'll have to be on your feet, but if anything get rid of those fucking cellphones. You will just lead them right to you if you carry one around. Depending where you live, hiding could be easy or hard. Living in a place like New York would be hard, but a place like Alaska there are miles of uncharted wilderness.
Remember people it's not IF martial law is going to happen it's WHEN its going to happen. Martial law drills in the U.S start july 27th and from what I heard banks could be closing around august, and thats when martial law could start.

Get a book called "how to grow more vegetables" (and fruits, grains, etc than you can imagine on less land) or something. It's on amazon, here's a link
http://www.amazon.com/Vegetables-Berries-Thought-Possible-Imagine/dp/1580087965/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247138480&sr=8-1
I bought this and it's full of charts, diagrams and information for growing ANYTHING, literally, ANYTHING, and how to grow it, which foods to grow together. This summer I plan to find some land and test out planting some food just to see how it would go. Some people say from this book they have 20ft high tomato plants. It's all about digging up the soil and using natural plants for compost. No fertilizer, no chemicals. This is the NUMBER ONE book one needs on survival as far as food. You find a way to purify water, and generate electricity (waterfall anyone?) then you're pretty much all set.
Yeah I also find it amazing how no one wants to think of this shit. Everyone's so comfortable and secure they act like nothing can go wrong and the supermarkets will just keep us alive.... but not ONE person within miles knows how to grow their own food. That is a BAD mistake. In my opinion the way the entire society is run is a bad mistake but it's all due to keeping free energy hidden from the world, that's the main cause of all this bullshit. Open your fucking eyes, they're lying. There are 30 story buildings under the ground at Area 51 and there's so much disgusting shit going on with your tax money it would make one psychotic or suicidal. I wish I were joking. I love how everyone thinks if it isn't on the news, it isn't real. Let's get serious. If you think there have been black projects going on in The United Statesthat even The President of the United States has been denied access to, that the MEDIA would be granted access? Wake up.
These paved roads should be beds for food, everyone should be flying around in saucers and we should be purifying all water, all peacefully, all in cooperation with the rest of the world. Until this happens you'll only see phony monetary systems, famines, and misery, misery, misery. It's only going to go one way or the complete, extreme other.
Did you guys know that an entire village and everyone in it was buried by a volcano once? They knew it was coming, but they had an important presidential election coming up, so one of the candidates made the media play the volcano down like it was nothing, so no one would evacuate. Everyone, including the presidential candidates, townspeople, and the media who lied, were buried in that volcano. Now what do you think of a reliant society?

This would be really useful, assuming you survive the collapse though.
That book would be a religion but you have to have basically everyone die off first or become a huge survivor group. That's the only pre-req.

Really? I did not know that. When? Where? Care to share a source or is it a fairy-tale?

In our day-to-day lives, people are often confronted with problems that are simply too much to handle. Most of us turn to some form of escapism, whether it be entertainment, drugs or one another.
It would be a good idea to keep a stash of board games, psychoactive materials and to stay together with friends. This will not only make any crises more survivable, but maybe even bearable.
Really? I did not know that. When? Where? Care to share a source or is it a fairy-tale?

It was in Uncle John's bathroom reader, a book with a bunch of history tales. Look it up yourself, lazy.

I think bringing down the internet ain't that easy, you'd have to hit the more important nodes to do that. Anyways, books are only what, 15% of survival? You actually have to have abilities and the right psych for it.

This. I think that disaster situations (I made a post years ago on &T) are totally unplanned for. I know that the whole point of disaster situations is that nobody knows when its going to happen but the level of preparedness that could be going on is quite high. Like having local meet up points pre arranged then a main meet up point in a location that is highly stocked with supplies (supermarket of sorts).
