View Full Version : Rats are Illegal in Alberta
Currently, only zoos, universities, and research institutes are allowed to own caged rats in Alberta, and possession of an unlicensed rat (including pet rats) is punishable by a $5,000 fine or 60 days in jail.
This came as a bit of a surprise to me. I've never been a big fan of rodents for pets, but so many people in Ontario love them.
What do you think? Reasonable to prevent infestations? or way overboard?

That's ridiculous. If it's because of the cleanliness issue - rats are as clean (probably cleaner) than any other domestic pet.

prolly because they don't want those motherfuckers breeding and fucking up the crops in a prairie province where it would take years for natural predators to kill them off.

Oi, I didn't mean to offend. Personally, I like rats, but my father has a fear that a pet rat'll somehow chew its way into the drywall and fuck with the electrical wiring of the house. He likes animals but this was the one thing that was always out of the question in regards to petkeeping when I was little.

Way overboard as pet rats doesn't causes infestations, it's about as stupid as one of our laws in regards to pets; simply put "you can't have an animal that causes fear", what a load of fucking bullshit is that? "causes fear"... Since New Year, every other week a person or pet have been attacked by one of the various breeds of fighting dogs all sorts of assholes keep over here, and nothing happens, but I couldn't even keep the least venomous of the Widow spiders if I wanted...
The world is full of stupid politicians and stupid laws, zombie-apocalypse-right-now-let's-start-over-and-get-it-right-this-time thankyouverymuch...

^^OK, I was drunk, but we still have a problem with stupid laws, the people who pass them, and irresponsible idiots who get certain animals for the wrong reasons, carry on.

As far as I am aware there is some half wit reason for this, something with crop protection. That was a deal breaker when making a decision to move out west to hit up the boom last year as I had pet rats at the time (they died in a house fire R.I.P). Looks like with the recession it was a good idea anyway. Although I live in a proudly agricultural province and we have no rat problem so I find the reasoning kind of weird.

Im also pretty sure that pitbulls are illegal in Ontario, or at least you need some special license or some shit to make sure your not fighting them. This is why I never got one when I lived there.

Canada has a bunch of gay laws. I hate anti animals laws the most. If I want to keep a kangaroo and billy goat in my basement I should be allowed to.

We do have those small deer mice in Alberta. But I have never met anyone who has seen a rat here. I'm glad we don't have them here... they seem disgusting.

This seems pretty unnecessary, i own 2 rats, (well now one, fuck, darkest moment of my life), anyway, they ARE one of the cleanest pets you could keep, as someone said, and the fear is just a PR issue. I even made 10$ from selling the 10 babies too the pet-store(IMO that was slavery, but no-one would adopt them seeing as how bad their rep is, eh, gotta be evil sometimes)

One of my neighbour's pet rats took a shit on my nice new coat when I was 11. It was runny and very fucking far from clean. Rats are a scourge upon the earth.
