Wii? are you still breathing?

It seems as if its been very quiet on the Wii front for some time now. Anything positive about the Wii lately is only it's sales.

My Wii is sitting here only to play N64 games from the VC service, and that got me thinking how many solid games that system had over a consistent period of time (80% made by Nintendo themselves).

With a quick look on IGN for any news, i noticed the most popular Wii game that people are looking up is Zelda TP which was a launch game. It doesn't seem that developers and nintendo themselves are looking far enough into the future. And its quite sad to see developers havent quite honed in or haven't been innovative enough.

The age of N64 brought 3d to console gaming and many games were brought forward with this in mind and appreciated. Yet when another dimension is created that physically gets you more into the game, it struggles.

Don't get me wrong, a few games have nailed it... but that's my point. its only a few.

I have owned a Wii since launch and really wanted it to succeed, not as a money maker for Nintendo, but has a really solid console that has alot to offer. When i caved in and bought and Xbox360 about 8 months ago, i was immediately taken aback by the sheer quality of the content and constant up coming games that pushes the envelope.

Is it because developers are keeping up with the cutting edge in technology and see developing a wii-powered game a backward step to make it a major studio priority?
Have they lost touch on developing a more basic (gfx wise) but just as fun game?
Or have they simply stopped caring.

Nintendo seem to be holding the Wii's head above the water (just like they did with N64 and GCN) but are they doing enough?
Where's sequels like Wave Race, F Zero, 1080 or Star Fox?

But to wrap up, one thing seems to becoming more and more obvious.
Nintendo's choice to give the Wii an 80cc engine in a 250cc class seems to be its biggest downfall. Not because good games cant be made on it, the potential is still huge. The developing world needs challenges though, they get they're game ideas from a distorted electric guitar with delay and flange, not from a piano anymore.

Any thoughts? Have i missed something major?

Mortal Kombat is in the works i do believe, and my problem with the wii is that its more for "Families" not so much people like me that want to go to a crowed room and get in shootouts :) Also Nintendo is trying to stay around the Nintendo brand, meaning there wont be many releases from other developers

i will addmit that RE4, MoH and Zelda were a few of the best ones. But i traded my wii in and bought a 360, more titles

Honestly, for my gaming taste, that's a fucking awesome list. There's a couple I'm not sure about, but most of those are sure things, and unlike anything on the other consoles.

2008 wasn't that great a year for Wii, but it did have some great titles like No More Heroes, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Boom Blox, and World of Goo.

Regardless, this thread is fucking asinine. The Wii is doing more than breathing, it's running laps around the competitors and cleaning fucking house in the process.

Personally I dislike the Wii as the motion controls are a hinderance to me rather than a valuable asset and the graphics are painfully poor compared to the offerings of the 360 and PS3.
Yes, we know that the Wii is popular for its innovation etc. but one has to consider where the Wii is going to go next. They can't come up with another massive improvement (on top of the control system, rather than improvements) so it seems that Nintendo will constantly be releasing a console with last gen graphics and the same gimmicky games.
Perhaps developers see this and don't spent too much effort in developing engines for the system which they might not be able to/want to utilise in the next round of nintendo games.

Regarding new games, I personally don't feel many of the consoles have offered me much last year. Fallout, WaW and LBP were the only ones which took my fancy (which I guess reflects my taste in games) but no console seems jam-packed with releases for '09 that I'll be rushing to buy.

I've always been a nintendo fanboy until this bullshit console came out. I remember the E3 videos of people having amazing swordfights, having heated shootouts and jumping behind their couches. The possibilities were endless. Fastforward to 2009, what do we have? Possibly the worst selection of games since gamecube. That's why I bought an Xbox 360. And let me tell you what, this is probably the best console I've owned since the SNES.

With 360 I don't have to struggle to find a game to buy or rent. Something I can't say about the Wii.

I've struggled through the gamecube, and I've been a nintendo-only fanboy since the SNES.

But I, for one, will not take nintendo's bullshit anymore.

So if you want to play some random minigame collection or Imagine: Party Babyz with the occasional ok game, go ahead, stick with the Wii. But if you want to have 79 played games within owning the console, just get a 360.

PS3 is ok I guess, but personally I think Sony is bullshit (including PS3).

Don't know about the rest of the world, but here in the UK very few people I know still play their Wiis.

I know quite a few people who brought it when Resident Evil 4 was ported, bought that game, and then haven't touched it since. My little brother, originally enticed by the bright colours and typically playful nature of the Nintendo mascots, didn't get past Wii Sports. I recommended that Mario Galaxy game to him, but he hated it; I can't say I thought much of it either.
I actually quite enjoyed Wii Sports, but it got old once I'd mastered the tennis game.

I'd say most of the people who brought the Wii in the UK were, first, taken in by the so-called 'innovative' gimmick of the control system, and, second, the low price tag (in comparison to the Wii's peers).

I find it ironic that Nintendo innovated the way we control video games, but still haven't come up with any new video game premises. All I ever see is fucking Mario, Warrio, Metroid, etc, etc, etc... And, judging by the replies in this thread, this doesn't seem like it's going to change anytime soon.

Of course, I only speak from personal experience, so take from that what you will. And, I suppose, if games like Mario are what typify decent gaming to you then you'll certainly have a blast. Not me though.

I bought a Wii, and although I have quite a lot of new games, I kept finding myself downloading the old games.

So, I just bought a N64 and bought the cartridges for the games that I liked, got them for about the same price as the VC game.

It is kinda strange, playing a 13 year old system over the newest one, but, the 64 kicks ass.

I think the Wii has done more than enough to please me, but I'd certainly like to see even more innovation and I'd also like to see a lot less effort put into ports and shovelware garbage, and more into games that match the quality of Nintendo's first party efforts.

So far this generation Nintendo has given me a sports game I actually find fun in Wii Sports, my new favorite game of all time, Super Mario Galaxy, another great Zelda game in Twilight Princess, a superb conclusion to my favorite gaming trilogy in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (featuring the best console FPS controls on the market), and my new favorite fighting game in Brawl. Then there's been great third party stuff like Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, World of Goo, and Boom Blox, games that are unique, fun, and unlike anything on the other other two consoles.

There's also a whole lot of great stuff on the horizon this year as I pointed out earlier, including a sequel to the best boxing game ever, Punch-Out!!, which I'm extremely excited for.

And you know why it's selling so much? Not because it has an awesome, expansive game library (which it doesn't), not because it has a multitude of useful features (which it doesn't), it sells so much because all of the trendy soccer moms want one so they can use Wii Fit occasionally, then forget about it, all of the "hip" teenage girls want one so they can play wii sports a couple of times and put it in their closet, and all of the little kids and tweens want the newest toy, So, yeah the Wii is selling the most but the "HD" consoles don't even consider the Wii to be a competitor, because it's a total fucking joke.

Theres quite a few games I'm waiting for on the Wii. Personally, my DS is my primary source of gaming. I'm going through Final Fantasy 1-6 on it, with 3 and 4 on the DS and the rest GBA. Then I plan to hit up Tactics Advance and Tactics Advance 2 (the first one I've 100%'d, not the 2nd one, though). Then perhaps some Disgaea! ^_^

It would be nice to see the wii remote more an extension of the mouse (this goes for DS too). Zack and Wiki was great, but maybe more p&c adventures like a bundled set that used the Scumm engine (although i know this is already possible through homebrew) and Warcraft or C&C.
Its not a fix, but its a little something to keep the older/hardcore crowd interested.

That and more (and consistently better) VC release titles.

Most of the big name sequels I found to be steps back from their predecessors, games like MGS2 and Final Fantasy X don't hold a candle to their earlier incarnations.

Exclusives listed in bold. I'd love to see a list of PS3 and Xbox 360 exclusives to compare. Genuine exclusives too, games not available on any other console or on PC.

The 360 and PS3 share so many titles, and they really don't have that much variety. 90% of what's released for them are Action and Racing games, with the occasional JRPG here and there. That's great if you like that stuff, but with the Wii you get gaming experiences unlike anything else. There's nothing on the PS3 or 360 comparable to World of Goo, or Zack and Wiki, or Boom Blox, or Galaxy, or Super Paper Mario, or WarioWare, Metroid Prime 3, or LostWinds, or Wii Sports.

You can hate all you want, but the system will still fly off the shelf, and it still has a pretty damn solid lineup of games. Whether or not you like them is beside the point, but you like fucking Mercenaries 2 so frankly, your opinion is totally irrelevant.

Man, the Wii pwns the shit out of the two media centers you guys think are consoles.

My xbox is like my cell phone, it plays games (GTA IV, Fifa and Orange box being the few games I've actually finished/played alot), but they're all the same, with a different skin (like all those 2D platformers about movies on your cell phone). The only thing I use my xbox for now is streaming movies and playing DVDs.

And don't tell me I should get a PS3 cause it's the same fucking games.

I haven't played my Wii in a while cause I had played (and loved) Zelda TP, Super Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, Metroid and Zack & Wiki, and it just felt like gamecube all over again (Nintendo being the only one releasing good games for it).

Then I lost track of Wii releases cause of the Xbox.

Now I see this beautiful list of Wii games, and I feel bad for not trusting Nintendo.

To me personally,it seems that if you don't care about Nintendo franchises there's no reason to own a Wii. The only game I really REALLY loved was Mario Galaxy. Mario Kart Wii was the same shit with re-used tracks and i'm not a huge fan of Smash Brothers. I have these games,so it's not like i'm just talking out of my ass (although people might think my opinions come from there,but that's debatable).

Also,what's the final verdict from you guys on No More Heroes? I hear from people that it's empty with a lot of art style and then I hear from other people the game is awesome from start to finish. Can you explain to me what the problem is with having classic tracks in the game? They have 16 brand new tracks, which is what all the Mario Karts have had, but in addition to that they throw in 16 reworked classic tracks and people talk like that's somehow a bad thing.

Seriously, I had Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts sitting on my shelf unopened and I almost decided to trade it in for something else. It got a lot of mixed reactions, I heard everything from it being an affront to the Banjo name, to it being the greatest game of 2008. I played it start to finish; I enjoyed the plot, I enjoyed the combat (even against the 'drones'), I enjoyed exploring the city. Some things to note: the city is empty, the people ignore you, lots of things are blocked off.

I still enjoyed it. It is a good use of the Wiimote. I will definitely pick up the sequel. It isn't the best game on Wii but it is very playable.

As for your opinion on the Wii, if 2009/2010 don't completely bring third-parties into the spotlight then I will be terribly surprised. Like I said, I feel that the Wii only lacks a really solid shooter, but your mileage may vary. You're also doing yourself a disservice if you are ignoring the great titles on WiiWare and VC.

Oddly enough, this may just well be by most anticipated Wii game. Sure, I'm psyched for stuff like The Conduit and Mad World, because the Wii definitely needs more third parties working on true, hardcore games with grown up sensibilities, but I've been so enamored with these small, downloadable titles as of late, and everything about Bit.Trip is right up my alley. Simple, yet challenging and addictive gameplay, wonderful chiptune music, and rhythm based play.

It reminds me of Rez if it were ported to the Atari or something, haha.

The only thing I ever use my Wii for is Virtual Console. There have only been two games I liked on the system:

Twilight Princess was an awful game. You can offer up whatever arguments you want, but the fact is the game was far to easy. A game should take longer than three days to complete. There were three of them in the last room of the 50-room deal in the desert. Other than that, a giant yawn-fest.

I've spent three times as much on Virtual Console as I have on Wii titles. That should say something. I don't know why I didn't buy a 360, as I owned an XBOX last generation and absolutely loved it.

I don't know, but all I'm saying is if you can buy a PS3 for $500 or a 360 for $300 plus the warrenty or $100 to get it fixed, then do so, I went the 360 route because of Xbox Live. Otherwise, get the Wii and a 200" hd so that the picture looks good and is kinda fun. If you have a modest 32" like I do, Wii sucks, but the other two kick ass. If you get the Wii, you probably don't have much money to spend, so have fun playing Mario XXXL on your 12" with your mommy and daddy.

Yeah, I'll agree with you on the game being too easy, I discussed that in-depth on GPP not too long ago. That's the thing I want the most in the next Zelda, is some fucking difficulty. And not artificial "don't pick up any hearts" bullshit difficulty either, but bosses that make me dip into my bottled fairy reserves on a regular basis. Unfortunately, I don't see the difficulty changing anytime soon, not with the influx of new "casual" players.

However, making a claim like the game is too short makes me wonder if you even played the thing. Twilight Princess is easily a 30 hour game, and most people take over 40 hours to finish it. I usually finish games quicker than the average player, and Twilight Princess took me 38 hours to complete. I only remember being stumped in one dungeon, and I don't think I ever died except for the final boss. Now, you can certainly do 38 hours in 3 days, but it would mean you have absolutely no life outside of videogames. And honestly, 40 hours is an absolutely insane amount of gameplay time for a title such as Zelda. Hell, you'd be lucky to get 10 hours out of a similar game on the HD consoles. Even RPG's are short as hell on those. You can beat Mass Effect in 15 hours if you ignore the sidequests. Fallout 3 can be tackled in about 20. The game isn't without flaws, but it's length is certainly not among them.

Your whole post was incredibly stupid, but this may be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. The reality of screen size to graphical fidelity is actually the inverse of what you're trying to say. 480P would look asstacular at 200", in fact 720P would look godawful at that screen size too unless you were sitting a good 30 feet away. Hell, even 1080P is too small a resolution for a 200" screen.

Oh, and i think Zelda is cool. I had an absolute blast playing TP (although i also admit it was pretty easy.. still fun though).

The Wii really got off to a flyer, the first 1 and a half to 2 years were great. Unfortunately im not very excited about the up coming titles, although some sound ok.. but that goes for gaming in general.

Bit.Trip has potential but i hope they use more pure chip tune music.

i dont particularly want to hear a DJ with chip tune elements (on video). i want to hear a chip tune artist... if the game is based graphically off an Atari, then imo they compose using the Atari sound modules... or at least a 4bit module (maybe 8 for more variety/creativity) without any pads or vst instruments added to it.

Or maybe use artists already making moves. it would be like a retro guitar hero for chip tune artists. that would be awesome. So many artists would love to have their music in a game like that.

Maybe the bullshit, shovelware, casual games, but claiming that all Wii games are less challenging than games on the HD consoles is ignorant as hell. I was playing Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on Hypermode a couple weeks ago, and Mogenar kicked my ass over and over again. Hell, I don't think I've restarted that many times in any game on the 360.

HD-DVD is a dead format, and only the PS3 can play Blu-Ray. So if you honestly think this is a deciding factor in what makes a console good, then you have no business talking about what 360 games are worth buying, because it's in the same boat as the Wii as far as you're concerned.
