It was awesome, but what was he trying to prove?

I'm not sure, I'm sure there was a whole speech before/after it, but that clip was cool nonetheless. :D

if he had a guitar and did that while jumping and pulling solos it would be cool :)

That'd have been pretty badass if he got them to sing the Thunderstruck intro. Have one third of the audience each sing a separate note in staccato, and it could be done.

Shame you named the thread that way, I just thought it would be someone dicking about on an instrument, turned out to be a sem-decent video.

"Bobby McFerrin uses the pentatonic scale and an audience's expectations to demonstrate neural programming at the World Science Festival 2009"
And I believe thats his book "Notes & Neurons: In Seach of a Common Chorus".
Putting two and two together, I think he's demonstrating that everybody has a similar, innate capability to follow the pentatonic scale along with his hopping.
Damn cool.
"Neural programming" wouldn't deal with an innate capability to follow a set scale. I would think that he demonstrated one interval and that, from it, an audience not necessarily familiar with the scale were able to derive the rest of it on demand.
