I've read some awsome sci-fi, but only rarely. Mosre often than not, sci-fi authors try to skimp out on decent descriptions and decent plotlines by compensating with a rediculous amount of fast paced action and suspense thriller.

I recetly read I,Robot and Foundation (both by Asimov) and loved the clever, intricate plot lines fused with all the theoretical science. If you have never read asimov, I recommend I,Robot very highly. Don't be put off by that crappy Will Smith action movie, the book has absolutely NOTHING to do with that movie, despite the fact that the cover was re-printed with Smoth on the front.

If you have, and can recommend any similarly awsome sci-fi books, I would be wonderfully appreciative. (even to the point of giving out thanks)

I love Banks.
I haven't read Hyperion yet. But I plan to as soon as I have more time.

I really enjoyed The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut. Its more of an allegorical Sci-Fi that you may be used to, though.

Some authors will simply tell you what is happening, Simmons will describe it and you put it together like "ahh".

have you not read Dune?

also, Jules Verne is great, though sci-fi in a different sense I guess (not space-oriented, except for from the earth to the moon and its sequel)
