I was talking to someone yesterday about the earthquake that just occurred in China. In case you don't already know, they estimated a few thousand dead, more than 900 middle schoolers died in a building collapse, and a whole bunch of other bad shit. My friend was saying how big this was and I couldn't help but think, "even if 10,000 died, that's still a tiny fraction of their overall population" Hell, if there's any disaster in china, it's going to kill at LEAST a thousand people just because of the population density. Whether it's a fire, flood, earthquake, or terrorist plot, it's going to kill at least a thousand chinese. If it happened here, it would be a tenth of the mortality rate. I think this is just something we'll have to get used to seeing in the news.

I think that any death is a tragedy, regardless of actual numbers, but I agree; with increasing population density and mass, people will have to get used to seeing large tallies of casualties from accidents, wars, and other such events. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't provide humanitarian support, or be saddened by the loss of life, however.

I mean, it's just as lame to turn off your emotions because of the huge numbers as it is to only respond to tragedies that result in at least XXXX casualties.

Actually, most of China's population lives together, and not really spread out. Belgium's population density is about 3x as high as China's because they just have a much larger surface.
