Okay, so far I have made this little guy:

It works better than I predicted, although there is a problem. The wire wrapped the best around the two side screws, and leaving the middle four not too well wrapped. So the pickup only gets the best sound from the two E strings.

I tried wrapping the coil in doubles, so every two have their own wrapping, but this didn't work out.

I thought about doing something like this.

O = screws

That way every screw gets the same amount of wrapping. Right? Would that pickup arrangement work? I'm kind of at a loss for ideas so far, except for that one. So, if anyone has some other ideas or tips they could lend me, please do so. Oh, and this is of course for acoustic guitar.

I'm interested in electrifying my 1/2 size acoustic, but I can't help you here.

Did you see my post in TFtT ?

Yes, I did, but why not enter the thread in DIY while I'm at it?

Dip it unwound in wax then wrap it like a manufactured one?

This was my initial post to the original thread in TFtT. Just to put all interested on the same page.

Also, I have yearned for years to have an opportunity to quote myself across fourms in a totally non-narcissistic manner.

Looks like you did a pretty good job of winding that coil. I think it would have helped a bit see what the pattern of the original (in the photo) screw pattern looked like.

First a few basics:

1) you might do better with this in anoter forum (I am thinking DIY or Music)

2) acoustic guitar... not to be insulting, but may we assume that all six strings are steel?

Then to the windings themselves. The amount of energy (electricity) generated in the coil is a funcion of seveal things, but without beating the horse too badly, the issue you are having relates to the number of turns.

Not necessarily the total number of laps the wire makes, but rather the cumulative angular displacement. A single turn around a single screw yields 360 degrees. A single turn around six screws gives a total of 360 but not evenly divided among the six poles.

If they were all in a straight line, the two at the ends would each have about180 each and the ones in the middle nearly 0 (the wire is drawn nearly straight; no turns). Your 'new' pattern will improve that, but you will still have about 90-100 degrees on the end poles and the remainder divided among the remaining 4 screws.

Is any of this making sense?

Lets pause there for a bit and see what you or others think.
