Hey guys, 2 nights ago I was walking home at night and heard a loud, pitiful mewing behind my neighbor's house. This went on for about 20 minutes while I was trying to find the cat. I saw something move in the bushes and I thought it was a hamster or other small rodent, but was surprised as all hell to find that it was a tiny kitten. It was fairly cold outside and the kitten might have died if I didn't find it.
I took it home and had my mom run out to the store to get it kitten milk and a bottle. I looked on the internet real quick to see if there was any way to determine how old it was. The eyes were still shut, ears folded over, and umbilical cord still attached. (which I thought was a piece of debris at first) So I guess that means it is between 1 and 3 days old.
I've been feeding it with a kitten bottle according to the instructions on a few websites specifically geared to orphaned kittens (http://muttcats.com/articles/neonatal_kitten_care.htm and http://www.caws.org/taming.html) and basically wanted to ask you guys for further advice since, well, you probably know your shit related to animals.
The poor thing had some fleas, which I think I killed by giving the kitten a warm bath a few times, but I'm buying a flea comb today just to be sure. Also I plan on taking it to a vet ASAP and buying a heating pad. (currently using a hot water bottle wrapped in towels which I have to change every few hours.)
My main concern is, during weekdays, there's no one to take care of the kitten between 7:20 AM - 3:04 PM. Both my parents work and I am still in high school. Is there a remote possibility that it can be left alone during this time, provided I feed it/poop & pee it before I leave? (I don't think I'm going to leave it by itself when I'm gone) This week, I am calling in sick for "pinkeye" so I can buy some time in order to figure out something, at least until the kitten is old enough to eat solid food and discharge waste on his own.
The main reason I am worried is because every kitten-related website says that I need to feed him every 2-3 hours around the clock. I've been sticking to around every 3-4 hours, or pretty much whenever he wakes up. (he sleeps like a baby after every feeding) How often should I be feeding him?
Thanks for reading everyone.
Almost forgot the pictures.

And can't you ask a neighbour or something to check on the kitten once while you're away?

Aw! Mother fucker is adorable. I wouldn't take time out of school just to take care of a kitten though, there's got to be some alternative solution to that. Think man, think.

That's a possibility, although our apartment doesn't allow pets and I really don't want more people than necessary to know about my lil kitty. (although my neighbor is nice and we are friends with them) I'll think about it for sure, though.

Take it to a shelter or find a home for it, if you don't have the time to care for it the way it needs to be. That's not a slam or a criticism of you- circumstances have made it so the kitten needs more than normal care. Give it to someone who has the time to care for it properly, and if you really want one of your own, get one that's been weaned and cared for to the point where it's safe to leave it by itself.

Fuckin' cute. Maybe you have a close friend that you could 'lend' the kitten to for caring in during school hours? Or maybe some relative that spends his day at home or something?

You should def get it down to the vets ASAP. The ones in my area are part of an orphan kitten group where volunteers help raise abandoned kittens. With a bit of luck they'll have something like that in your neck of the woods.
I take it by milk, you mean some kind of special cat milk. Cows milk is big no no for cats.
Keep up the good work though, sounds like you're doing a good job

I was thinking of putting up an ad on Craiglist about it. Maybe I could offer someone a $50 Best Buy giftcard as reimbursement? Something is telling me that's not going to be enough for 3-4 weeks, which is when he should be weaned.
I know kittens can't get their shots until they reach about 4 weeks of age, but I'm taking it to the vet just to make sure that it's healthy.

Is there a name for it? I live in a fairly large city so there's got to be something like what you mentioned. Thanks for the advice.
And yes, my mom bought kitten replacement milk from the store, along with a kitten-sized bottle.

To be completely honest, I actually looked into that already. The shelters around here won't take cats that are younger than a certain age. (8 or 9 weeks I believe.) Don't worry dude, I would never put my own happiness above an animal's welfare. I will do whatever is in the best interest of the kitten.
I would like to somehow get it back if I were to let someone take care of it until it's weaned, though....there is just something so romantic about saving a newborn kitten and keeping it as a lifelong companion. :(

It's part of the Cats Protection League over here. I live in the UK though, so not sure if the same charity exists where you are. If you just call up the vet though they'll be able to tell you who can help. The one over here is free too which is sweet. They accept donations but there's no set charge.

What? :(
I think I've been doing everything right; the kitty can urinate and defecate with assistance, and the stool/urine are the normal color. The kitty cries when it's hungry or cold. He loves being held and he likes to knead his paws on my fingers.

The cat doesn't look more than 2 weeks old.
And as for the gender, why don't you just check down there? Like, get your finger and go around, searching for balls. If it doesn't have balls, then it's a girl.
Also, if it was that old, don't you think the Mother was feeding it?

Oh. I guess it's a boy then.
And no, it's between 1 and 3 days old (by now, it's between 2 and 5 days old) because the ears are still folded, eyes closed, and umbilical cord attached. At first I was afraid that I took him away from his mom, but then I read that momma cats almost never leave their young by themselves within the first 1 or 2 days. This lil guy was all by himself mewing helplessly in the cold so I just did what felt right at the time. :(

Chances are you can find someone in the compendium stickied at the top of the forum front page, who might be able to help you - situations like this is the exact reason we made it in the first place.
As I know jack shit about kittays, I can't help you, but in case you can't leave it alone for a couple hours a day I'd say your best bet would be to have a chat with your neighbor, come on, who could say no to a fluffy little kitten?

Keep this shit out of my goddamn forum.
A few questions first: What's his breathing like? Is it rapid or is he breathing normally?
I'm not that clued-up on cats but I know some basic info -
Keep him warm. That's a biggie. Definitely try to get a heat pad of some sort, wrap a towel round it, and put it in a box/his bed. I assume you already know that newborn kits can't empty their bladder and bowels themselves.
On feeding, you should be feeding every 2 hours for the first week of his life, then every 3 hours for the next three weeks.
Please don't leave him on his own, I'm sure one of your neighbours or a friend/relative will be more than willing to help out.

His breathing seems to be fine. I've been taking extra care to bottle feed him properly so none of it gets into his lungs or anything like that. Like I said, I've been using a hot water bottle/bag thing wrapped in a towel. There's a paper towel on top so I can see if he's been relieving himself or if there is any flea dirt. The whole contraption is in a cardboard box with enough room for him to move around to cooler spots if he gets too hot. The hot water bottle doesn't take up the whole box which is nice. :)
So far it's been pretty good. He pooed on his own yesterday which surprised and disgusted me since I didn't notice until his poop got all over my shirt. I had given him a little rub down with a moist cotton a bit before then, which I guess stimulated his bowels. I clean him up every time he has to go though; he seems to like the attention he gets once he realizes that warm water feels good. :p
While I was feeding him a while ago, I noticed that his umbilical cord fell off. He seems to be gaining a good amount of weight as well.
Still waiting on the camera...

Is he okay feeding from a bottle? I'd assume you'd need a 3-6ml syringe or a dropper, for a kitten so young.

It's sort of a 50/50 thing, but definitely not unheard of. Sometimes the mother just doesn't accept the kitten. On the other hand, sometimes she loves the kitten as if it were her own. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has a momma cat who is lactating. Hell, I don't know too many people with cats at all. My mom's friend is taking care of some feral kittens that they found in the backyard, but she lives about an hour away. I'll have her call her up and see what's up.
Thanks for all the replies so far guys, it's really encouraging to see so many people who love animals as much as I do. I'll be sure to update the thread regularly.

Do you have any scales you can use to weigh him with? You should be making sure he's gaining weight at a healthy speed. :)
orbital bear cannon

Don't have a scale quite yet, but I do plan on taking him to the vet pretty soon, hopefully they weigh him. He's urinated and passed stool a little bit on his own, is this normal or could it be something bad, like diarrhea? The stool wasn't very solid due to him having an all-kitten milk diet, but it's the normal mustard-ish color.

Yep, weighing him will be the first thing they do.

I'm not too sure, but it should have a jam-like consistency... I know they start to go on their own at around 3 weeks. I'd keep an eye on whatever substances come out of him for the next few days, just to make sure.

A few things-
- His stomach seems to be pretty rounded. I don't know if this is good or bad. I want to say it might even be a little big, but he seems to be eating fine, mostly. Could this be a sign of worms or some other terrible kitty illness? :(
- He passes stools only about once a day. It has a toothpaste-like consistency and is a brownish mustard color. Is this cause for concern?
- After his most recent feeding, he kept meowing and wouldn't fall asleep. When placed into his box, which is still warm etc, he wouldn't stop moving around and meowing. He tries sucking on the towel sometimes as well, but I don't think he's hungry seeing as he's just eaten. Am I underfeeding him? I feed him until he gets sleepy and stops sucking on the bottle. Also, I burp him after every meal. I don't really know what a kitten burp sounds like but I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right. Anyone know what a kitty burp sounds like?
- Right now I am using Hartz Kitten Milk Replacement in canned form. It "expires" tomorrow, as the instructions say to discard it after 3 days. It's been covered and refrigerated during this time. (It has been exactly 3 days) However, my parents are lazy fucks and aren't getting more until tomorrow morning. (We are getting Pet AG KMR milk this time around, as I have read nothing but bad things about the Hartz milk.) Is it ok if I feed the kitten once tomorrow with the milk before I leave for school?
My dad is gonna be home tomorrow and I'm not too sure if he can take care of the kitty. I'm going to show him how to take care of it the best I can. I can't stay home when he doesn't have work....On the other hand, I definitely can't keep missing school for the next two weeks. :(
I think it is in the best interest of the kitten if I can find him a new loving home. At this point, I don't care if I get to re-adopt him when he's old enough or not. I just want the little guy to grow up into a big kitty.
If anyone knows of any rescue groups that will accept baby kittens in the San Jose, CA area, please help. :(
I have some good news too: I have a vet appointment scheduled for him this Wednesday. If there is any bad news hopefully I find out then. I will keep you guys updated, as always. Sorry for the long update but I have had a long day worried sick about the kitten.

Hey Orbit, I a glad you shot me a PM. I actually raised a kitten from the same age, so i know a lot of this and can help you out. So far it sounds like you've been a great daddy to your little kitty.
The milk replacer you are using is a good brand, I'm pretty sure that's what i used on Sassy. From what you said it sounds like you are feeding your kitty right, as long as he isn't coughing when its fed you're set. I think you would have mentioned that, so you're covered.
The vet will give you a better idea how old the kitty is, which is really going to be helpful in weaning. When your kitty is about 3 weeks old you are going to want to start weaning him. Weaning isn't going to happen overnight. What i did was i soaked kitten formula cat chow (it must be kitten specific food) in about a third of a can of your kitten formula until it is soft enough for your kitty to nibble on. You will want to start by trying to give it one meal a day like this, moving up as your kitten learn to eat more this way. Once your kitty is weaned you can leave it at home when you go to school as long as you leave it food somewhere he will find it.
A great alternative to a water bottle is rice. Just take a long, thick hunting sock and fill it about halfway with rice. twist it and pull the end of the sock over the end with the rice and throw it in the microwave for a minute, or until warm. This will stay a warmer a lot longer and your kitty will like the fact that it is fuzzy.
On that note, your kitty isn't going to want to sleep alone forever. My guess would be that is why he is crying when you put him in his box. You can try holding him until he falls asleep and then putting him in the box, that might help. Sassy was stubborn. After she was about two weeks old i let her sleep on my pillow when i went to bed at night, which stopped all kitty crying.
I would venture to guess your kitten probably has worms. A lot of kittens get them, not just feral ones. You're vet will check for that. Another thing you might want to ask about is ringworm. Sassy had it and let me tell you it's a bitch to get rid of. It can pass from your kitten to you, and once you've got it you're stuck with it for a good while.
That is all I can think of right now. If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I will be sure to check in here at least daily. Let me know what the vet says, okay?
Oh, my votes for his name are Mowgli, because he was saved when he was a baby (first choice for obvious reasons) or (in keeping with the Jungle Book theme) Bagheera, because I always thought it was an awesome name for a cat.
P.S. my boyfriend thinks your kitty is a Maine coon. Maybe you should ask the vet?

Thank you so much for the advice; I will pass it on to my dad so he has a better idea of how to take better care of the lil guy and make him as comfortable as possible until he gets to a vet. :)
I just read on Wikipedia that mostly all kittens are born with worms :( but I am so glad that I already have the vet appointment booked. Kitty seems to be growing at a good pace, and I gave him a bath with a small dab of Palmolive dish soap today - the fleas seem to be gone for now, as I haven't seen any flea dirt in his bedding today.
As for the name, I think I will decide once his eyes are open.
Thanks again for the help Eden.

He did pretty good! :)
Kitty was asleep when I got home. He woke up for a little bit and I had to calm him down, but he fell asleep again. I have a can of powdered KMR now, it looks pretty good. I hope I mixed it right; it says 2 parts water 1 part powder, but I don't know if you're supposed to press down the powder into the spoon or not. Just in case, I just used normal scoops. Kitty is pretty deep in sleep right now; he wouldn't wake up even when I petted him and moved his stuffed animal away. He just shifts around every now and then, maybe he's dreaming! ;)
I have the formula ready to feed him as soon as he wakes up, but I have to do bathroom duty for kitty before then. :(
I'll try to get a pic of him bottle feeding for you guys.

The most important bit of care information i can give you is this: DO NOT try the KMR!! I thought it would be good to know what my baby was drinking, and was I ever wrong. I used that after my dad decided the canned stuff was going to fast, and it tastes horrible.
I wouldn't worry overly much about his tummy. Kittens tend to look a little odd until they are old enough to get fluffy and start really moving around, round tummies are fairly normal as far as i have seen.
But, don't totally take my word for it. You have the right idea wanting to ask the vet. Oh, to answer your question, he can be dewormed at six weeks. You'll want to do a follow up deworming treatment at eight weeks, but your vet should cover that. What I found really helpful was making a list of questions to ask the vet, so I was sure i didn't forget anything.
Oh, have his eyes opened? or are they still kind of glued together with kitty eye gunk? I have some tips on helping him get his eyes opened if you need them, since mommy kitties usually help with that.
This picture is for Eden as thanks for her help, as well as to the rest of you fellas for your encouragement and general riff-raff. :hrmph: ;)

So the lady from the cat rescue said we don't need to take the kitty to the vet since they have their own vets if anything's wrong. We are about to take the kitty to the foster's home. The lady said that the foster said they will keep it for 5 weeks and then neuter it, and then he will be back home living with me. I'm bringing him along with a Mickey Mouse stuffed animal that he likes to snuggle up next to. :)

Sounds great, dude. My family did the same with our cat, we found it as a kitten abandoned by it's owners in a field (but not nearly as young as yours). It's a seal point Himalayan, so it's a damn-fine bred cat, but the owner just didn't want it. Well, anyway, I'm missing the little guy even though I only know about this kitten over the internet. Just dropped Mowgli off (his name :)) at his new foster dad's home. He's a very nice older gentleman in his 60s, who is an engineer. He has 5 kittens! They were just so adorable I just instantly awwww'd. I've never gotten to play with kittens that young (6 weeks) ever. He said they were all bottle fed as babies, so I am very happy that Mowgli gets to live with someone who knows what they are doing. His foster dad says he's home all the time so we won't have to take care of him on the weekends. I am a little sad that Mowgli's going to be away for the next 5 weeks, but I am looking forward to him as a grown kitty! :)
To the guy who offered $10 PayPal, could you kindly donate it to 13th Street Cats in your name? They have done me a very big service and $10 is the least I can offer them. I am planning on donating more in 5 weeks when Mowgli is old enough to live with me.

Do realize that you've been treated fairly beyond your rights on this site, considering your recurring off topic posts.
To put it differently; I could in good conscience and within the boundaries of my authority have issued a warning after your second post and an infraction after the third.
Please note I did neither. Also, I didn't delete any of the crap you posted although you can rest assured everything you've posted so far will be deleted, and the appropriate consequences will follow, if necessary.
Now, an off topic post once in a while around here isn't really something that'd get my piss boiling, as I feel anyone should be allowed to make a joke or pun in threads where it wouldn't be a problem, but that's not what you did.
Off topic posts that were obviously made to annoy people has a tendency to piss me off to no end, especially when they're made in a specialist forum!

First of all, major major props for raising you kitty. I woulda named him Charizard, but Mowgli is cool too (jungle book = awesome)
Anyway, maybe it's human instinct to do that? If so, you can't blame them. Secondly, I believe that humans are inherently very compassionate and considerate, especially as chidlren. It is environmental factors that fuck the world up. You can't judge a human before it's even had a chance to do good or bad. Babies are just blank canvases, so it turning into a monster is just as much a reflection on yourself.
Secondly, cats hunt and kill. They prey on weak animals and kill them, then either play hockey with the remains (like my cat :p) or eat them. I'm pretty flabbergasted if you saw a kitten and a baby both alone and abandoned, and chose the kitten over the human.

That [Mowgli] sounds like a great name. Now if I could just pronounce it since I didn't see the movie. He opened his eyes on Sept 6 which makes his birthday Aug 27. He could not have been more that 2 to 4 days old when you found him. When he came here he weighed 5.4 ounces and is now up to 9.2 which is just about the right weight gain. If you would like to come by and see him just email me with a time and I will be sure to be here.

If you do adopt. Make sure it is female cat. I had two males all they did was fight when I was not around. Now I have a girl and boy and they just act like the other one does not exist.
Unless, it is cold then they sleep bum to bum.

Maybe Friday, definitely by Saturday. I still have to buy some kitty supplies. (food, litter box, etc)

Ok, here's what you'll want to do:
boil it first, and strip off all the fur/skin.
cut out all the guts, and strip off all the good meat from the bones.
marinate it teriyaki sauce and fry that shit up

Well I got my kitty back 2 days ago. He is pretty happy and eats a lot of food. After he eats, he starts playing a little rough and bites a little. Other than that, he responds to my voice and likes to be rubbed on his shoulders. He's sleeping right now like a little baby. I'll post some pics once I get a camera that doesn't suck.
