^^^ LoL, but true!
I'd have to go with either Joe Cocker or Vanilla Fudge... don't think either one ever did anything original.

Uh... Durrrrr!
I totally misread your post, but I have heard that much of the Blimp's early work was either covers or rip-offs of very obscure blues artists. Nothing wrong with that, except they were never credited.

Metallica might be a piece of shit, but Apocalyptica made Metallica a piece of bearable shit.

My uncle went to HS with Joe, their bass player. I remember watching him in another band back in the late 70's called Hi-Fi.

Vanilla Fudge did plenty of original tunes. But yeah, their best stuff were covers. Their version of Season of the Witch has got to be the best out there.
As far as copy bands go, I though Wild Child [a Door's ocver band] were pretty damn authentic sounding.

I always thought that if women created a band, there where 99,95% of chances that it would be either shitty Spice Girl ''bitch power'' pop, or a shitty MTV rap group until I heard them.
Or maybe I found the 0.05%?

Yes, a few but that doesn't really qualify them as a cover band, does it?

So are the dead a cover band, too?
Even if you only count the songs they played more than 10 times, that's still upwards of 70.

yes, in my book the grateful dead is a cover band. hell one of my fav dead songs, me an my uncle, is a cover. the only reason i did not mention them is because i think sublime does a better job covering other peoples songs.

cover bands don't write their own lyrics, they can change the music and whatnot. sublime isn't remotely a cover band, they have more original work than covers...

Interesting perspectives...Personally, I only consider a group to be a cover band if they proclaim themselves as a cover band and justify it by mostly playing covers. To me, I'd rather give a group the benefit of the doubt and give them their own recognition as an original, unique band- especially if the majority of their success (financially and popularly) is from their original work.

Dark Star Orchestra.
Have you heard of Furthur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furthur_(band))?
Badfish. Sublime cover band. Went to see them once. Drank a bit much then left before they came on stage for drunken city hijinks. My friends really liked them though.
Iron Horse. Their Bluegrass Tribute to Modest Mouse (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2QEV58V8) is fucking amazing. They also do bluegrass covers of Radiohead, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Green Day, Linkin Park, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and others.
And Phix. They're irrelevant now that Phish is back together though :)
