Well, I officially hate a certain county and about...4 policemen personally. I probably shouldn't have pissed them off by slipping my cuffs but thank god they dropped that. I found out about 30 minutes afterwards that's 5 years in jail:(. Anyways...I'm awaiting court in November, and I've got a feeling that this has fucked over any hopes I had of joining a branch. I was planning on talking with a recruit about halfway through September after I got settled in at my new job, but is it even possible to join under these conditions? And if I wait to speak with a recruiter until after my court date and I've paid off my fine(that'll take a few months) could I join up then?

Thanks for the medal, and that was exactly the answer I was hoping for. I just wasn't sure about any of that. I think the safety course is around 10 weeks in my state, so with any luck I can look into signing up in February.

protip: if a cop wants to give you a breathalyzer, ask to have a blood sample taken instead. i dont believe they can refuse you, but by them time you get to the station or find another cop with the needle, your alcohol level will have dropped.

It varies state to state. One of my friends got a DUI in Colorado, and he got like 3 weeks in jail and a month of house arrest with constant tests for alcohol. Plus heavy fines and a year without a license.

Another friend got a DUI in Wyoming, and he got a week of jail and a month of an ankle monitor that checked for alcohol all of the time. License suspended for just a short while.

Another in Wyoming got his when he was a minor, and he had a short amount of time without a license and a year of weekly drug tests/counseling.

But, op.. maybe you should consider not joining the military at all? Do you really want them running your life for their shady purposes?

I've got two at the tender age of 22... Yeah sucks... The first I understand, I was driving got pulled over. Passed all of the field sobriety, but smelled of whiskey after being at the bar. Blew a .09, one point over the limit :(.

The second though was fucking ridiculous. I was at a party, got super smashed. I lived back on campus at the time and didn't want to drive, so I crawled in my car, leaned the seat back and proceeded to pass out. Hour later, there's a light in my window and a knocking. YAY! POLICE! Some how got fucking arrested for sleeping in my car, instead of driving.... :confused:

But if your car's running, regardless of whether it's in motion, it's a DUI. In Alabama the car doesn't even have to be turned on, if the keys are in the ignition, it's a DUI.
You can't "fight" it. You can go to court and ask for any reduction the judge will be willing to make though... just don't expect a judge to ever go easy on any DUI charge.

If you don't have a complex legal history though, you may be able to plead your case and get some sort of reduction, maybe even a drop to some sort of substance abuse program if you're lucky, but again, don't count on it. Minimum fines for DUIs around here are very steep, and I'd bet they are there too.

It won't hurt to let the judge know that you didn't realize it was illegal, understanding that that's no legal defense, but it does show a difference from the real recklessness behavior of actually driving while intoxicated, which you were purposefully avoiding because of your intentions to handle yourself responsibly. Admit that it was a mistake, one you made due to not understanding the law, and one you wouldn't have made otherwise, and request any sort of allowance he can make for those circumstances, as the situation could seriously hinder your life ambitions and your plans for the military.

Also, go ahead and talk to the recruiter first, he might be able to help out as well.

Yeah pretty much this. Fuck it, I'm just going to tell the judge what happened, and that I'm sorry I made this mistake. I just turned 21 two weeks before this happened blah blah blah....go from there. I'll give a recruiter a ring after I've gotten some money set aside for this.
