View Full Version : Ruger 10/22 comparison

I, like alot of other shooters, own a Ruger 10/22 carbine.
I just wanted to compare notes with those of you that own them. What kind of accuracy are you getting? What model do you own, what ammo, etc.
I bought mine from Wal-Mart about two years ago. It is just the simple ruger 10/22 carbine.
I have come to expect less than stellar accuracy out of my 10/22. I have an old Savage Mk I bolt action single shot that shoots a much tighter pattern at 50 yards than my 10/22. The 10/22 is lucky to get smaller than a 2 1/2" group at 50 yards, using Federal Auto Match bulk pack ammunition.
MY 10/22 does not like cheap bulk ammunition at all. No Federal, Remington or Winchester bulk packs will cycle through it, save the aforementioned one. This is slightly irritating- does anyone else have this issue?
Theonly optics on my 10/22 is a Simmons x4 ".22 Mag" scope, mounted on spacers so that the open sight is still accessible. The scope, I feel, is more accurate than the carbine, and is used more for "seein' whats out there". It is, after all, a .22 carbine.
I am not to say that I am unsatisfied with it- it is indeed a handy little carbine, and is very pleasant to handle while inside a truck, tractor or on horseback- save that the bolt knob gets in the way of the scabbard at times.
So, what is your 10/22 like?

The accuracy on mine isn't fantastic either. I haven't really tried printing groups on paper so I can't give you a specific comparison, but mine can take out golf balls at 40 yards using CCI subsonic ammo (it's for plinking at home so I can't make a lot of noise).
I don't like to use optics on the thing because the mounts kept knocking loose after a while and throwing off my POI with every shot.
I've shot bulk packs through it no problem. Remington "golden bullets", Federal bulk packs (not match ones, just standard HP), and random junky Winchesters in 50's era packaging that I found in a big "box o guns" I inherited one time. You should try disassembling and reassembling the magazines, it seems to improve cycling because it alters the spring tension. Maybe you should also get some new mags too, and see if that fixes the problem. I'm told that those Ruger Rotary mags can be pretty hit or miss in terms of quality.
Given that it's a .22, 2MOA would be pretty impressive. When you throw in the fact that it's a semi-automatic with a 16.5" barrel, you're not really set up for tremendous accuracy. Your Savage, on the other hand, is designed to be a tackdriver, so comparing the two isn't really fair.
You should get an after-market stock, they're cool. I have one of those Tapco ones with the telescoping stock and a pistol grip (ZOMG EVIL CALIFORNIA ASSAULT WEAPON) and it's a lot more fun to shoot, plus I can store bonus ammo in the pistol grip.

Yeah, I know the comparison is not really fair. My Win. Lever .22 will still outshoot it tho, and it has roughly the same barrel length.
I should get one of those stocks. I have alot of "regular" .22's. I should make this my "single-mother-killing" small caliber carbine.
My friend swears by a red dot on a 10/22, I might try that.
As for other mags, I have 3 others, one being another rotary, and ALL of them hate bulk ammo. :(

this muzzle break in stainless
One of those aftermarket extended mag releases(if you own a 10/22 BUY ONE, theyre great)
Barrel mounted laser pointer with one of those pressure switch doodads, a few 30 round mags, a 25 round steel lipped ram line, and a shit load of 10 round factory mags.
My 10/22 seems to feed any jacketed 22's, but it jams every time on leadheads.

I'll bet if you locktite the screw threads it would stay put much better.
Mine's been as accurate as I've ever needed it to be. From a rest, I can keep it under an inch at 50 yards with federal gold. I lost the barrel band a long time ago, maybe that has something to do with it. The only ammo that doesn't seem to cycle too well in mine is Winchester Super-X. I have no optics. Just a plain ol 10/22.
I think impressive accuracy can be attained from these rifles, a buddy had a stock 10/22 in .22 magnum with a 4x Weaver, took a crow out of a treetop from 150 yards. Funny thing is I told him the shot couldn't be done a couple seconds before the stupid bird fell dead out of the tree with a couple feathers lazily following him down. Never make the John Sedgwick mistake :sniper:

My 10/22 will eat up and spit out anything I feed it, even with my 50rd hotlip mag. I have never really sat down at the bench and shot groups, but I sighted it in for 90yds a while back for an egg shoot and it did pretty well. I am sure it will shoot under an inch at 50yds. It has a Butler Creek synthetic stock, good see through scope mounts, a cheapie 4X Simmons scope, and a Power Custom hammer and sear kit. I use the sights far more than I do the scope though as it is mostly just a plinker. The trigger is one of the best investments I have made for it, other than more mags.
