Reset all the defaults and don't register the product or send it back to the company for service.
From what I understand the company cannot locate the device, even when it's in use. Your friend should be fine.

Yea, pretty sure those gps devices only receive information. Just reset everything on it and sell it on ebay.

I'd be careful, I remember hearing a pretty big news story a while back of a guy who had his 08 cadillac stolen, he managed to get it back by hacking into the gps unit online....
So yes, you can find a single unit through a serial code or something like that, but as long as you didnt steal it from Bill Gates you should be clear.

I'm gonna guess that was with a gps transmitter designed specifically for tracking a stolen vehicle. These consumer products only receive the information.
